Don't Make The Mistakes I Made When Growing Tomatoes .......

What do tomatoes need to grow? It's the question most people ask when they first start to grow tomatoes. Get it right and you will be rewarded ten times over with beautiful, juicy, tasty tomatoes.

There are four essential things to growing successful tomatoes. They are correct soil, sunlight, water and fertilizer.

Sounds easy doesn't it - well, it is if you know what type of soil to plant your tomatoes in, how much sunlight they need each day, whether to water every day or every 2 or 3 days and how much and how often should you fertilize your tomato plants.

When I first started growing tomatoes I just thought you popped them in a spare space in the garden or in a container on the balcony, give them a water every couple of days and when I remembered a little fertilizer, all going well in a few weeks I should have tomato plants laden with beautiful fruit.

Well, how wrong was I, living on the coast, my garden soil was very sandy and didn't hold water at all. No wonder my poor little tomato plants were struggling - it was a bit like planting them in the middle of a desert!

Out of the 3 tomato plants I originally planted one hardy little plant survived and somehow produced 3 very, very small tomatoes. Not the best start to tomato growing.

But now after being pointed in the right direction by a friend who had the BEST tomato plants I had ever seen growing in her backyard, I can pick enough tomatoes from my plants to fill a bucket. And they have a taste and aroma "to die for".

I can taste the Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich now!

Tomatoes Need To Grow In Soil ....

But Not Just Any Soil

All garden soils, be it sandy or heavy clay, need lots of organic matter, compost and manure dug in so your tomato plants get the best start in life. When you improve your soil you are repaid with healthier, more productive plants.

Soils are enriched by adding fertilizers, minerals and organic matter. Fertilizers supply nutrients to the soil, which in turn feed your plants and organic matter improves the ability of the soil to retain nutrients and water. All these are readily available in bags or in bulk from your local garden centre or plant nursery.

Take the measurements of your vegetable patch with you and the garden centre will be able to calculate for you how much you need. Don't forget to also get a good quality mulch to put a nice thick layer on top of your soil. The mulch will help to keep moisture in the soil and also deter weeds.

If growing your tomatoes in containers buy the best quality potting mix or specialised potting mix you can afford to fill your containers. Again, don't forget the mulch.

Tomatoes Are Sunworshippers!

Mushrooms Like To Be Kept In The Dark - Not Tomatoes

Tomatoes love sunshine and they don't need sunblock like we do.

Tomatoes need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight daily. Really, the more sunlight your tomato plants receive the better. Why do they need so much sunlight? Tomatoes use the sunlight and turn it into energy to make their fruit. So the more sunlight they get the more tomatoes they produce.

If setting up a tomato patch, choose the position in your yard carefully. Take note of the number of hours per day the tomato patch will be in sunlight. Make sure it gets a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. If not, change the position of the veggie patch.

Water, Water Everywhere - But How Much Do I Give My Tomatoes?

Water only when your plants need it.

Tomatoes like moisture, but overwatering is harmful. You not only waste water, but soggy soil will prevent the roots from getting the air they need.

If your plants look a little wilted on a hot, summer afternoon, that's usually normal. They'll perk up overnight. If plants are wilted in the morning, don't wait -- water them! (However remember that certain diseases can also cause wilting.)

Water early in the day to cut down on evaporation losses and also to give your plants plenty of time to dry out. Wet foliage overnight may help trigger some diseases.

A Hungry Tomato Is An Unhappy Tomato

When and how to fertilize your tomato plants is just as important as how to water them.

There are wonderful seaweed solutions on the market now that you can spray on the foliage or water into the soil, as well as the general fertilizers and specialised tomato food. Always follow the directions on the pack and measure and mix your fertilizers correctly.

And don't make the mistake I made and a lot of newbie veggie gardeners make of giving a double dose of fertilizer thinking it will make the plants grow twice as fast!

Let me tell you it doesn't work and can do damage to your precious seedlings.

You can follow "My Small Vegetable Garden" here on Squidoo.

Mistakes I made in my garden: I planted too close together and I did not have a good staking system.

Remember when tomatoes really tasted like tomatoes - not those tasteless, rock-hard varieties they have in the supermarket.
