Probably the worst type of depression to have is bipolar depression or manic depression as it is better known generally.

The condition is often fully realized when the affected person goes from happy to sad in short periods of time. While this is a serious condition, there are times when we all have short periods of uncharacteristic changes in our temperament which may just be a sign of short term stress. Doctors actually have diagnosed regular, persistent mood swings as a common symptom of depression.

The difference to normal depression is when the person starts getting irritable and argumentative over very minor things; then it could be a sign of manic depression. Periods of increased energy (and possible euphoria) are the reason that bipolar depression has been termed manic depression. Owing to this type of rapid swing in temperament, it can be difficult to deal with manic depressives as the mood can change rapidly to one of aggression and confrontation. To make matters worse, the manic depressive patient when in this elevated mood may even carry on with sudden periods of elation for almost a week.

When it comes to the low or down periods, they can actually cause someone who is suffering from manic depression to experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from actual depression. The feeling of being of no use to anyone will over a period of time affect the persons mind and cause further problems for the therapist to overcome. Worthlessness, unjustified guilt, no interest in anything pleasurable are just a few of the feelings a manic depressive feels when they in their down phase similar to other forms of depression. Over time the diagnosis of this condition has been refined and behavioral therapists now consider that a person suffering from any of these symptoms for as little as a week consistently is a possible manic depressive candidate.

Despite being a severe form of depression, it is comforting to know that modern day therapies have made it possible to treat this condition. Providing the victim continues to follow the instructions their doctor has given them, it is possible to have a relatively normal life. The patient must be able to release any strong emotions that are inside and by seeing the doctor as and when needed, may of the problems can be overcome.

Although positive results for a manic depressive patient can still be achieved from natural alternatives, a proper and a more lasting relief from symptoms can still be best acquired through seeing cognitive behavioral therapists. Psychiatrists especially those that specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy are still the best hope for a person with bipolar depression. In fact the chances are that if you suffer with manic depression that your primary source of care will be the cognitive behavioral therapist and from the results achieved by the health care professional, it looks like this will continue.

Causes of bipolar disorder

A depressed person will also find it difficult to concentrate as their mind is elsewhere. This can culminate in failing to remember things that happened or what other people have said and this lack of interest actually makes depressed people very inattentive.

Symptoms of depression can also include poor sleep patterns especially too much or to little sleep. Noticing if a person's sleep pattern is disrupted can be as easy to detect as their eating habits when they start eating far more or less than usual. Unfortunately, when the condition has been allowed to carry on for some time then thoughts of death and dying seems to prevail and there may a marked deterioration in their overall health with complaints of constant headaches and digestive problems for instance.
