What is Distance Learning?

So, you're here because you've probably heard a lot lately about the concept of distance learning. Although millions of people have used distance learning programs to get a degree and advance in their fields, still more don't really know what it's all about. That's what I'm here for. By the time you finish this article, you'll know everything you need to know about exactly what distance learning is, and how you can take advantage of it. So let's get started by answering the biggest question you probably have - what is distance learning?

IMPORTANT NOTE! To get the best idea of the distance learning programs available to you, it's a really good idea to check out some online resources that can help you find out if what you want to study is available.

There are two resources that I recommend for this, and both of them only take maybe two minutes to use.

I highly recommend you check these out BEFORE continuing with this article. Click on the links below:

Distance Learning: Earn You Degree on YOUR Terms

Distance learning is basically just a way to earn a degree (a certificate, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, even a master's or PhD) when you're unable to physically attend classes. Sound too good to be true? It's not. You're still going to do the course work and learn just as you would in a traditional academic setting, but instead of having to adjust your schedule to fit in class time and "homework," you can complete the work at a time that's convenient for you.

You'll still have the same resources you would if you had to actually be physically present in a classroom - you and your teachers, along with other students, are still in close communication, but instead of face to face discussions you'll interact through things like instant messaging, forum posts, chat rooms or even just traditional old email.

What makes distance learning perfect for millions of people is that our lives have gotten more and more hectic. Since time is so short for most people nowadays, the distance learning option lets you dictate when and how you'll learn and study. It fits into your schedule, rather than you having to adjust your schedule to accommodate someone else's. Starting to see why it's so popular?

Learn Where You Want, When You Want

Distance learning can be the perfect solution if you want to continue your education, but you simply don't have the time to get to classes in person. This is why distance learning is so popular among parents, professionals or anyone who doesn't have the time or resources to devote to physically being in a classroom.

That's basically the one thing I really love about distance learning - flexibility. Instead of rushing off to class in the evenings, or on weekends, you can learn at any time that's convenient for you. I know some people who fit in their distance learning assignments in the evenings after the kids have gone to bed, early in the morning before work, or even at work during those "slow times" -- just don't tell your boss ;)

What's the Best Way to Get Started?

Assuming you already know what you want to study, all you need to do is find the right distance learning program. There are a ton of resources out there that will help you find what you're looking for, but unfortunately most of them are really lacking in either information or the number of schools and programs they have access to.

There are really only two resources that I'd recommend you use, so let's talk about those for a second.

The first resource I recommend is right here (click on the link to check it out). This is a great service that will find accredited (and that's VERY important) colleges and programs that perfectly match your desired area(s) of study. Using it is a snap. Simply plug in your zip code, choose your area of interest, tell them where to send the information, and everything you need to know will be on its way.

The whole process takes less than five minutes! Click here to try it out now.

The second resource I'd recommend is right here. Like the first site, using it is as simple as can be. Zip code, area of interest and your contact info is all they need.

What I would do is spend a little bit of time on both of these sites and really get as must information as you can from as many schools as you can. It's completely free, so there's no reason to limit your options at this point. I've found it's always best to have a bunch of different schools and programs to choose from, so you'll have the best chance at finding that perfect match.

So that's really all there is to it. If you're at all interested in exploring the possibility of taking advantage of the great opportunities available to you with distance learning, take the first simply "baby step" and get out there and start gathering information! What do you have to lose?
