Anyway, I posted in a thread that was started by someone new to Internet Marketing. This poster was asking how much time it took to succeed in IM. Apparently, he only had a an hour or two to work on an online business each night, and he worried it wasn't enough.

Conversation continued...wonderful advice. I started responding and, as usual, got off on a bit of a tangent. It was a long post, but as I re-read it, I realized two things...

1) - Well, theres goes a great article! haha! and

2) - More people should read this.

Actually, I think the question should be clarified...

As in:

#1 "How much time DO you spend?"

and

#2 "How much time do you HAVE to spend?"

As for #1 - I spend a lot of time....LOTS of time. 99.9% of my computer use is for my business. I'm either reading, researching, pinging, tagging, writing, posting...and on and on. There is ALWAYS something that can be done online towards improving my business. My office is in my home so work is readily accessible to me. If I'm bored, or avoiding laundry, or heck, watching TV... I'm probably messing on the computer.

It's hard to leave "work" at "the office" when "the office" is your home

As for #2 - How much time do I HAVE to spend?

Probably half as much as I do.

Thing is, other types of jobs you "clock out" and can't wait to get away from it for the night or for the weekend. Salary jobs, you can't wait to go home or get your week of paid vacation.... It's just "a job"...

This...well, it's not a "job".... This, I LOVE.

When you get into to IM, spend whatever time you can. Pick a project/product and get yourself out there. heck, an hour a day on Squidoo can go a LONG way (and it's free...how many businesses can you start for free?)

For ANYONE brand-spanking new, someone who really doesn't know the ins and outs of IM or HTML or auto-responders or any of that, I recommend Squidoo. Sorry, I sound like a broken record with the "Do Squidoo" chatter, but I am serious.

When new...

You don't know how to get traffic
You don't know how to code a website - simple things like adding an image..or hell, adding CONTENT can be hard.
Yes, blogs are easy enough for new-comers, BUT...getting traffic to your blog? Thats a whole other ballgame.

With Squidoo, you can have free presence on the web. You already get to benefit from the love-affair between Google and Squidoo. You can pick ONE product (carefully) and create a nice looking page with content relevant to that product...and you can get organic traffic within 2-3 days. All it takes is a bit of research and learning Squidoo (which can all be found WITHIN Squidoo), a few free tools....and anyone can do it.

Get rich? Uh, no...not likely.

But ya know what it will do that all new-comers must have? It will show results...feedback. Within a week, you can see people coming to your site courtesy of Google, see HOW they found you...and maybe make a sale or two..or ten

I think so many come in to IM and quickly quit because they don't see results. Squidoo allows you to see achievement soon. Then, you can branch out... start writing some articles that point to your Squidoo page..maybe start a blog.... make more lenses...learn how to add an "opt-in" to your Squidoo page... send newsletters...build a list...make your own product...and so on and so on.

Ok, I'm shutting up now. This has GOT to be the longest post in history! (Do I get an award?)

In all seriousness, if less new-comers would ask, "What product sells?" or "What program works?" and asked, "Where do I start?", they'd be better off. Find a starting point.... don't fall for the hype, flash, controversy, and promise of over-night riches.

This is a business...not a miracle.
