What is Trans Fat, Really?

Ranked #118,948 in Healthy Living, #1,150,532 overall

Trans Fat is a known cause for obesity and many other problems such as hypertension (high blood pressure) As much as there was all the hype in the 90's about saturated fats being bad for you, scientists are starting to find out the opposite. Many saturated fats are vital and healthy fats that can even help combat cancer. A trans fat will always be an unsaturated fat- a saturated fat can never be trans fat. It is through a hydrogenation process where they unsaturated the fats...thus causing the dreaded trans fat. So change what you look for on labels of products at the grocery store, because some saturated fats are good for you, but ALL trans fats are bad. And remember, it is only in unsaturated fats that you will find trans fats. The scary thing is that companies dont have to report that it has trans fat if it is under a certain amount...meaning that an item could have trans fat even if the label says zero. Zero trans fat isn't the same thing as 'No' trans fat so be weary of any company that tries to market a product as trans fat free saying 'zero' as opposed to 'no.'
