Reading, a workout for the brain

Whether we're reading a novel, a biography or a book on goldfish, we seek an elusive combination of pleasure, utility and intellectual stimulation, something to pique our curiosity and engage our minds.

Reading is like physical exercise. You could call reading a workout for the brain.

Alright, get your favourite chair ready or curl up on the couch. Have a lamp on behind, or to the side, so that you can clearly see you're reading. Arrange your necessities chocolates, coffee, chewing gum or whatever on a flat surface withing hand's reach.

Turn the first page ......

How do we choose what to read?

Pick a book

We choose a book to read because

  • You've enjoyed reading another book by the same author

  • One of your favourite authors has recommended a book by another author

  • A book has been recommended by a friend

  • The book is on a topic or in a style, or genre, of interest to you.

Here is a selection of books which I recommend. I hope you stumble upon something unexpectedly which seizes your imagination. Or, at any rate, takes your fancy.

Ancient Roman detectives

Authors

Ancient manuscripts

I Love Sr Fidelma

I just can't wait for October to get my copy of the latest Fidelma mystery!

Two of my favourite books

From Philip K Dick

My Cat reads Books too

My old cat is a reader too. You can see his profile at Vladi, lensmaster of the feline persuasion

The two of us spend many a quiet afternoon in the garden or, depending on the time of year, lounging inside by the fire, me on my old armchair and Vladimir on the rug, reading our books. It's a very pleasant way indeed to pass the time, the quiet broken only by the soft clickety clack of my knitting needles and the occasional furball-clearance process from my companion.

Vladimir's Choice

Historical Fiction

The Story of Troy

Mythology Collections

The Legends of King Arthur
