What I Wear: My Personal Style

This is a look into how my style evolved over the years. I went from bell bottoms and smock tops in the 70s, to that 80s stuff that I don't even want to get into, to the corporate work wear where I developed my style again. No more blue jeans there. Then, I quit the corporate world and started dressing quite casually at my next jaunt in the workforce.

If you are interested, I will show you, as you scroll, how my style evolved (or I might say, "devolved") over the years. At the end, you'll also see where I stand today — trendsetter or makeover candidate? Don't look yet, though. Just scroll down from here and see the evolution of my personal style.

At A New Job

A work uniform

After the corporate job and having to dress every day, I chose a more casual "uniform" for my computer job at another place. There, it was A-OK to be casual — really casual. At this job, I didn't want to have to spend my last moments at night gathering (and stressing on) what I would wear the next day. I wanted to be able to get dressed and not have to think about what to wear.

So, I decided that I would create a uniform. It turned out to be a man's blue oxford, a white t-shirt-type blouse underneath the always unbuttoned oxford, a pair of blue jeans, topped (or bottomed :) off with a pair of (tan, usually) boat shoes and a pair from an abundance of white cotton socks. This made it so easy to get ready for work!

The Casual Look

Dressing down was less stressful

I couldn't find a picture of myself in my "uniform," but here, you can see that I took quite well to the casual look. On this day, we had to wear black jeans with a red polo shirt for an "event." I don't particularly like polo shirts, so I wore a stand-by shirt until the event took place. Look at that sloppy shirt! How's that for casual?

My supervisor took this picture of me talking with our department supervisor — neither of those two were participating in the event — just some of us peons. :) ...I never did see either of my bosses dressed in any way but casual. Happily for me, it was a sort of mark of the place.

Big Foot; Less Shoe

Do my feet look big?

Well, I wear a size 8, but those bigger tennis shoes out there make me feel like a clod hopper. A canvas, women's sneaker was my favorite shoe to wear with my "uniform." Prices vary

Home Uniform

Joan reminded me

Joan's comment in the comments section reminded me that I had been meaning to create a new style for my work-at-home life. Below, you'll see what I have come up with so far. It consists of a top, pants from a set of scrubs, and a pair of sandals. That would make it comfortable enough to work at home doing the light housework and office work AND be able to go straight to the door when someone knocks. If I have to go out, I could put on an over-top in order to look a little more polished. If I really want to look stylish, I could throw on a light-weight scarf and maybe a jaunty little sun hat — and a nicer pair of shoes. (I am not much on jewelry, but I can hear the wheels turning out there. ...Go for it! :)

Tell me what you think in the comments section. :)

For me, a little heel is better than a flat shoe, even sandals.

Young Moms

For the young mom who still wants to be chic in her at-home attire, I suggest an at-home "uniform" of jumpsuits. Comfortable, but hip!

I guess I go by my own signature style - one which scream "Okay, this is the way this guy dresses!". Plain shirt or plain tee's with khakis or trousers! This is a nice "style statement"! :)
PS: I guess it is true that fashion is passe and 'style' is eternal. :)

I am still in the corporate world from nine to five - but not quite the suit part of it. Thye classify us as "business ready". No, I don't know what that means either, except I can only wear jeans on Fridays for casual days.

Woah, I can really relate to this. Next year, I really have to get out of the habit of not dressing until noon. LOL - for those knocks at the door, you know.

I like your idea about a uniform for working at home. One that is comfortable to work in yet presentable enough to go to the door.
