For those who are new to Internet Marketing, it is important to understand what an affiliate is, how we can become one and how being an affiliate can help us to eventually work from home.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Quite simply, if you don't have your own product to sell online then you can promote someone else's product by affiliating with them.

Then each time you make a sale of that product, you receive a commission which is usually around 50% but can sometimes even be as high as 75%.

This is fantastic if we do not have the time, inclination or even confidence to create our own information products. Basically you let someone else do the work of product creation while you just have to focus on making sure people are aware that the product exists.

You would usually do this by driving traffic to your website either through paid advertising, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), blogging and article writing, and social networking (excellent for getting free viral traffic).

If you think about it, the LIST of subscribers to your own website are almost certainly going to have an interest in the affiliate product you have chosen - that's why they subscribed to your site in the first place.

In other words, they are highly targeted potential prospects, and the trick is to turn those potential prospects into customers by choosing high quality, related products to the content of your website.

What are the downsides to affiliate marketing?

Well to be truthful, it can be difficult and slow at first to make any real money, especially if you don't really know what you are doing. Many people give up after a time because they just don't make enough money quickly enough. You should be prepared to work at it and don't expect to necessarily make any money overnight.

Being an affiliate marketer is a learnable skill and if you jump in at the deep end with your eyes shut, you may find that you are out of your depth without the proper knowledge and skill set to make it work.
