Reading with my Ears

A few years ago, I began traveling as an Information Technology consultant. The long hours in planes and airports, as well as a little insomnia from being away from my family, drove me to seek a way to pass the time.

I found what I was looking for in audiobooks. Now that I'm not traveling anymore, I still listen to books as I drive in to work each day, while I'm on the treadmill, or even when I'm cleaning the house.

On this lens, you'll find some reviews of the books, and book series that I've enjoyed along the way.

Acacia: Book One: The War With the Mein

This book by David Anthony Durham reminds me alot of the Wheel of Time series. While I found the narrator somewhat tedious in the beginning, as I became accustomed to his voice, I was no longer distracted by it.

This book covers the overtaking of the Acacian empire by the people of the Mein people, and is a very engaging story.

Eifenheim

In Eifelheim, Michael Flynn creates an interesting mix of historical novel & sci-fi. Set both in "Now" and in the Middle Ages, during the time of the Black Plague, the book looks at one specific village and an alternate version of the past. I really enjoyed this unusual mix of literature. I don't remember anything about the narration, which is usually a good thing.

Voyagers: Book One

I've been on a real science fiction kick, and that made Ben Bova a must-read. While I enjoyed the book for the most part, I was not impressed with the ending--had I known it was a trilogy, perhaps I would have expected the open ending. Though it was enjoyable, I may look to read a book from a different series next time I read Bova.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I found this novel by Susanna Clarke unique and
interesting. Set in England in the time "after English
magic", two new magicians face off as they both attempt to bring magic back to England. I've listened to alot of audiobooks, and this one is truly unique. I don't even know what genre to put it in ;)

His Dark Materials: Book I: The Golden Compass

With all the controversy surrounding the recent movie based on the book, I had to give this one a listen. While I can appreciate the religious undertones, I found that the story was really well written, and exciting. The narrators were excellent, and really drew me into the story. I look forward to experiencing the next book in the series.
