In today's fast paced and competitive world, Personal Development is the word on everyone's lips, but exactly does the term "Personal Development" actually cover?
Personal Development, when you really break it down, is all about furthering yourself, investing in your own growth. This is actually something that we have all be doing for all of our lives. In its basic form Personal Development is really just education for, and about ourselves. So our introduction to Personal Development was really our first day in kindergarten. Some of our lessons have been structured, some of it not so structured.
As we grew up, our class room lessons were along the same lines as Professional Development. We were given knowledge and tools to apply to "real life". The school rules and any spiritual or religious teachings were akin to Personal Development. They tried to teach us how to think and act, how to treat other people and get the most out of life.
Personal Development in its modern sense though, is more about being able to have a clearer understanding of who you are. What drives you, how to get what you want from life and live life to its fullest.
Competition today is higher than it has ever been, there are more people vying for the same job and looking for the next promotion. In the past getting the edge on those around you was a simple case of being more skilled in a certain area. Back then, knowledge was power. With the advent of the internet and easy access to knowledge, power is now the application of knowledge. And so the new "edge" is having personal power, confidence and leadership skills.
In our search for the tools to beat those around us we have uncovered some interesting truths. The best way to succeed is not beat the next guy and hope they fail, it is simply to focus on what it is you're good at and those things that bring you the most happiness. The most successful people around aren't smarter or better educated than the next guy. They followed their bliss and did the things they enjoyed and were good at. Now they are successful in all areas of their lives, relationships, health and finances.
To me this is what the Personal Development industry is really all about. Discovering your strengths and weaknesses, learning to focus and use the things that make you unique and happy, and breaking through old limiting beliefs. If properly integrated into your life, learning these skills and concepts can enable you to bring more joy, purpose and prosperity into all areas of your life.
Personal Development has been around for as long as there have been books or even thought. All the great philosophers were essentially in the personal development industry. Trying to get meaning out of life and helping people to live better lives.
The Personal Development industry has experienced tremendous growth in the last 10-20years. Worldwide, It's currently estimated to worth around US$22Billion and increasing at a rate of 20% every year! Anthony "Tony" Robbins is practically a household name. "The Secret" book and movie has become a worldwide phenomenon. Personal Development has been hit the mainstream and it's here to stay.
It's not just about motivation and inspiration though. It's really about TRANSFORMATION. It's about taking your current self and learning new tools and beliefs to transform your life from the ordinary into the extra-ordinary! You can start by reading one of the thousands of books out there, watching a movie or videos, listening to audio, dong a home study course or attending a multi-day event. There are the classics like "Think & Grow Rich" and the new age Hollywood of "The Secret". The choice is yours. Have a look around and look for a teacher or guide that resonates with you and take it from there. What works for one person may not work for others. It's about finding the one that works for you and that you like.
So regardless of if you go "old school" with Jim Rohn, Napoleon Hill and Earl Knightingale; or new age with Anthony Robbins, John Assaraf and Eckhart Tolle, you definitely won't regret taking a quiet introspective look into yourself and start moving your life towards one filled with all your wildest dreams.
