What is Anime and Manga?

What can I tell you about anime and manga?

What exactly is "Anime"? What is "Manga"? Why should you know about this amazing style sweeping the Western World?

Anime is the term for Japanese animation, while manga is the term for Japanese comics, or more commonly known as graphic novels. Their style is characterized by bold lines, intricate detail, exaggerated bodies, and of course, wild BIG hair. The anime and manga style gives a free-range to artists who are far more interested in working with unique characters and landscapes, and are free to create a definite story within a piece of artwork. It is also a great style to work with for those interested in working with emotions and body proportions!

Style, Characteristics, and Story

Let's Keep it General

The general style for anime and manga characters includes exaggerated features in the body and face, intricate detail in clothing, hair, and facial features. Exaggerated facial features include large eyes that are specifically drawn to create unique expressions for specific characters, and bigger hair tends to be more popular among artists. Bold lines are also generally seen among this style.

That being said, every artist has their own style within the western understanding of the terms "anime" and "manga." Some artist's personal styles tend to be more realistic, while others tend to lean more towards the fantasy or supernatural genre. The same goes for storylines in manga. Storylines range from completely realistic to completely...not.

Style Differences... What do you Mean?

"Realistic" Anime Characters

Realistic anime characters tend to be less exaggerated in form. They may, however, still utilize exaggerated facial features (eyes), but ultimately appear more like a living, breathing individual.

For example, I'll use Grave of the Fireflies. This is a full length Studio Ghibli film, but demonstrates characters in a more realistic style. Other good examples include Baccano!, Akira, Steamboy, and the classic Studio Ghibli films.

Style Differences... The other Side

"Unrealistic" Anime Characters

I use the term "unrealistic" to simply mean that these anime feature storylines or characters that have more of a fantasy nature to them (or simply could never happen at all). A large number of anime feature beautifully drawn characters in unrealistic situations, while other anime just aim for completely crazy.

Strictly looking at characters, I'll Use Dragon Ball Z as an example. Other's include characters from Shin Chan, Fruit's Basket, and Yu-Gi-Oh, just to name a few popular ones.

Anime and Manga in the Western World

Where can I find it?

In almost every book store, you can find an entire shelf full of Japanese manga. They are generally pretty popular, to say the least. Japanese manga are read opposite of western style books, with the binding to the right. This is done in order to keep the original artwork in their intended poses (this ultimately keeps the artwork from having to be reversed).

A large number of manga will ultimately be animated, or in essence, become anime. There are a few series out there, however, that start as anime but will then also become a manga series. A large number of these anime series have become very popular, and many of the Saturday morning cartoon shows include English-dubbed anime (Pokemon is a perfect example). Anime featuring more adult themes are also available for purchase in box sets or can be viewed on such channels as "Adult Swim."
