Badda Bing - Search for your answer!

Bing is Microsoft's new search engine. It was launched June 3 of 2009. Some of you lensmasters may have already seen hits to your lenses from it...I know I have. Bing is causing quite a stir in the internet world. Besides being called 'prettier' than the Google search page, it is being marketed as a 'decision engine'. It is supposed to give users a more relevant list of options and cut out all of the crap. Bing has a beautiful homepage that offers tabs to narrow your search that include images, videos, maps, and shopping. It is similar to Google's but, in my opinion, it is presented in a more user friendly way. They stand out more and frankly, I am more likely to use the other options on Bing than on Google. It also has an Extras tab at the top where you can read blogs and set your personal preferences. The background pictures are also aesthetically pleasing and they change everytime you enter the home page. But does all of this fancy stuff make it better than Google? I think you should decide for yourself. Go to the Bing vs Google side by side comparision page and try it for yourself.

Do you think Bing will overpower Google?

No

Pukeko says:

Google is too strong. I think Twitter has a better shot at Google than Bing. But in the end Google will prevail.

susannaduffy says:

How can Bing overpower google? What they have done is COPY google, and last year's copy too. Wave will be here soon and bing will be forgotten like other microsoft mishaps

Yes

dagsmith says:

It's unlikely that Bing will win - but they are making bigger gains than any other Google competitor.

Search Engine Optimization For Dummies

You have a cool Web site, and a really great product, service, or cause you want people to know about. But visitors aren't beating down your cyber-door. What happened? The answer, most likely, is that you haven't made your site irresistible to search engines.

Search engines have a great deal of control over the volume of traffic a Web site gets, because they put your site in front of people searching for your product or service. If you know the secrets of wooing the search engines, you can

*Gain greater visibility for your site
*Advance your position in the rankings
*Avoid techniques that cause search engines to bump your site to the end of the list
*Make pay-per-click advertising pay off

Listen to the pros

Bing was made available to some reviewers in the weeks before it went live. Although I don't think people are going to be saying "Why don't you Bing it?" anytime soon, reviews have been quite positive.

Wired.Com's review was titled "Bing, But No Boom". They like Bing and were quoted saying "Bing's travel search is a clear winner that sets it far ahead of Yahoo and Google." On the downside, they also thought that it's "local' and 'my listings' features were easy to miss.

Brier Dudley, a write for the Seattle Times, said "Google is a wonderful tool, but it's like getting all your news from CNN, your coffee only from Starbucks or your operating systems only from Microsoft".

Not only has Bing impressed people like Steve Wozniak (Apple co-founder) and Rafe Needleman (CNet editor), it has my fellow Squidooers talking in the forums.

Yahoo tried but couldn't defeat Google. Maybe Bing could be it's best competitor. We'll just have to wait and see.

The war is on

*UPDATE*

How is Bing doing?

I don't know if Google has anything to worry about or not but here are what some studies are saying today:

In a small study done by Catalyst Group, 1 in 3 Google users preferred Bing. They rated it on visual design, organization of features, filtering options, and relevance of results. Bing beat Google on all criteria except for results relevance. Although Bing did well, it was not enough to make most Google users switch. You can see the results of the study here.

In another article Google vs. Bing: Bing Holds Its Own in Search-Off, Edward C. Baig writes,

"Talk about an iron grip on search. To research this column comparing Google's venerable search engine with Microsoft's upstart Bing, I Googled "Bing versus Google." It didn't even occur to me to Bing the search.

In a nutshell, that's Microsoft's problem. The company recently unveiled a fresh and attractive search alternative to Google. It's just darn difficult to change habits, including my own.

Google's is the search box affixed near the top of the Web browsers I use. And way more often than not, Google delivers the thorough search results I'm seeking and does so with expediency: If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

He has a point. I have my Google toolbar at the top of my page and I type everything into it. Maybe Microsoft's problem is that we are creatures of habit and it will take a lot for us to switch to something new when the old has been so good to us.

I think Bing is great. It's visually appealing and brings up my Squidoo pages sooner than Google. Is that enough for me to switch? Probably not. I'll let you make your own decision about it but I do wish Microsoft the best on it's endeavor.

A study from IMT Strategies demonstrates that a company's presence on relevant search engines is the most important medium for maintaining high brand awareness-more important than print media, radio, or TV commercials.
