MLM Defined, For Starters
Here's a way of looking at how the MLM Business System Works
MLM is a concept that has often been hard to explain because it has been so misunderstood. Is it a pyramid scheme? Is it legal? Do only the people at the top make money?
Well, here is a way of looking at it that I hope will better define what it is and then we can get into what it isn't.
When was the last time you recommended a good book, restaurant or movie to a friend? How often do you do that? Probably pretty often, right?
But, when was the last time the publisher, restaurant or movie producer sent you a "royalty" check for the referral?
Probably, never.
Well, despite the way things usually are, the idea behind what is now the fastest growing home based business trend in America and around the world, Network Marketing (or MLM), is that if you get paid for recommending things you like, use and believe in, you'll do this more and more! And, you'll probably find some others that want to do the same thing.
That's it in a nutshell.
What if you found a great product or service and you loved it so much you decided to go into business marketing it?
You earn a small commission for the ongoing purchases of those you refer to this product or service, and you're also paid a small commission when you introduce this concept to others, and they refer people.
Pretty ingenious, huh?
And, the best part is that this concept can create true, passive, residual income for you and your family. And, you can touch the lives of hundreds and even thousands of other people.
As "referral based marketing" you are telling others about your products or services. Some will be customers, and you'll earn a commission on what they buy from you, or your distributor website.
Some will also want to make money and will sign up to become a distributor also. And, the company will pay you a percentage of all of that person's sales as well.
You are building a Network (sales force) and the company is rewarding you directly for your efforts.
Your Network (MLM Business) Looks Like This Over Time

How MLM Compares to Franchising
It's about time leverage
This is the ability to get paid month after month on the work that you do one time.
A good analogy that you are already familiar with is the franchising industry. In franchising, the franchisee, or one who purchases the rights to do business using a well-known business name such as McDonald's, pays a royalty fee every month to the franchiser, or parent company. It's always a percentage of the profits earned.
The parent company, or McDonald's, has incredible time leverage. The more McDonald's stores they have around the world, the more money they make.
But, the parent company certainly doesn't do all of the work. If they have 5,000 stores, each open 18 hours a day, 90,000 hours are worked daily on their behalf.
Your MLM Business works the same way!
For instance, let's say you start your own Network Marketing business and begin by investing five hours per week into your business. You introduce your business system to Mike and begin working with him. He also puts five hours a week into his business. You now have 10 hours per week working on your behalf, although you are only putting in five hours yourself.
If you and Mike each bring in a new partner, who each commit to five hours, you will soon be benefiting from 20 hours per week. Remember, your actual time involvement is only five hours each week.
By the end of the first month, you have forty hours each week working on your behalf. At the end of the second month, over 640 hours will be invested into your business each week, but not all by you. You are only putting in five.
In network marketing, we are paid for opening "outlets" and teaching those "outlets" to be successful.

Facts about MLM

There is no doubt that MLM is a proven business system and that some very large incomes can be made. I have watched a $1 MILLION monthly check be awarded to a man onstage for his efforts building an MLM business.
I myself have created a very comfortable six figure income in MLM, but it has taken steady, consistent work. I have been involved since January, 1994. I was not an overnight success story. I learned, educated myself, tried, failed, tried again, and was successful.
Here are some facts to know about MLM
MLM Facts
What you can count on to be Successful
- Building a solid, successful organization and income takes time. You should plan on two to five years. Know this going in and don't get discouraged when your first pay check is not enough to allow you to quit your job. Rome was not built in a day, neither is a strong, solid business. Of any kind!
- It is possible for the average person to make a well above average income.
- There has never been a better time to build a successful business.
- Network Marketing has been written about favorably by major publications such as Forbes, Fortune, Success, Fast Company, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.Warren Buffett now owns a Network Marketing Company and Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki widely endorse the industry.
- Some people very close to you, including some of your friends and family, will not join you or support you in your business. Be prepared for this and know that you can still be wildly successful! Let go of any bad feelings you may harbor because of this. It will only slow you down and you don't need them!
- Some people that tell you "no" in the beginning will eventually join you and build a strong business. You just have to be there when they are ready. Never burn any bridges and always be positive even when they say no. I promise some of them will partner with you later.
Myths of MLM

So, shall we talk about the myths? Because there are many myths about MLM and Network Marketing. And, you don't want to walk by an industry that might be the perfect fit for you because you don't have the facts.
Here are some common myths about MLM...
MLM Myths - Let's see what has been so misunderstood in our industry
- It's get rich quick. Now, why would this method of doing business be any different than any other? If it were truly "get rich quick" wouldn't everyone be doing it? RUN far and fast from anyone promising this.
- MLM is a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal. Legitimate MLM companies are not. In a pyramid, the one at the top makes all of the money and those at the bottom have no chance. In MLM, everyone has the ability to reach the top of the pay plan with effort and consistency. Also, in a legitimate MLM business, there are goods and/or services that change hands. It's a real marketing system.
- MLM doesn't work for most people. Unfortunately, the 80/20 rule applies in MLM as well as all of life. Most people who claim that MLM did not work for them simply did not work the business as a business. They may have talked to 2 people and quit when both said no. They may have had a family member tell them they are crazy. Or, they never even got started. MLM is not a lottery system. Talk to anyone making a living in an MLM business and he/she will recount for you the time, effort and money invested in building a successful business. If someone tells you it doesn't work, ask them for a detailed plan of exactly what steps he/she took to be successful.
Here is a great explanation -
Do Most People Fail in MLM - Once you sign up, you are on your own. While there are some unscrupulous "sponsors" in MLM who sign 'em up and leave 'em in the dust, a professional Network Marketer knows that his/her success is determined in large part by yours and certainly that of the downline. Research and interview your potential sponsor carefully. Does he/she return your calls; rely on email only; follow up in a timely way? Don't be afraid to ask specific questions and have specific expectations of your sponsor. Ask what training you can expect and what the first month will consist of in working together. Your sponsor should be your best ally. Make sure you choose wisely.
What do YOU Want From an MLM Business
Success has 1 important piece, 1 common thread - commitment.
Get clear on your reason why and don't let anyone deter you.
Don't be afraid to try new things and fail. There is no such thing as failure. Everything is a lesson in business and you must look at each thing this way.
MLM Decision - Which is the right MLM Business for You

So, you've read the facts and seen the myths. What is the next step for you? Are you in the process of choosing a company, product or sponsor?
Here is a list of some things to look for in all three -
How to Choose a Product

Here are some things to look for -
- Is the product unique in some way? In other words, not just a "me too" product.
- Does it have true retail-ability (new word!) Can you retail the product to a customer and make a product? Or is the wholesale cost to you, as a distributor, more than what a person could buy a similar product for somewhere else?
- Is it a product in an industry that is growing? Or is the industry fading out? Research this carefully.
- Are you excited about the product? Will you use it? Promote it? Give it away? Enjoy it?
- Do you feel right about the product and it's viability in the marketplace in your gut?
How to Choose a Company

- How long has the company been in business? There is not a right or wrong answer, but research carefully when going with a start up and know going in that there is a risk. If it succeeds and you stick with it, you'll be positioned very nicely. If not, well, you know what is next.
Companies past the 5 year mark and before the 12 year mark are typically a great place to be and grow. - Who is the management team and what is their background? Have they been with any companies that have been shut down? Do they have a clean track record? Have they been consistent with their promises and production?
- Do paycheck and product deliver on time?
How to Choose a Sponsor

Some things to consider...
- Does he/she return phone calls and emails promptly?
- Are you being promised anything that seems too good to be true? It probably is.
- Are you being offered incentives for joining? Look closely at this. Why would someone with a successful track record and your best interests at heart need to "incentivize you" to join the team? What is missing here?
- Ask your potential sponsor what can be expected the first day; week; month; 90 days and year as a partnership? What type of training is offered? What can you expect?
- If possible, have a phone conversation first so you can determine from the conversation that all is well.
Who is Jackie Ulmer in MLM
Just a little of my story....
I wear many hats, probably a lot like you. I am a Professional Network Marketer. I am also a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, kid's shuttle service, maid, cook, and more.I had a great career before motherhood and Network Marketing came into the picture. I was in sales in the airline industry. It was a dream job, traveling the world, wining, dining and wooing travel agents and travelers and doing all of this on an expense account. It was a blast.
Problem is it did not mesh well with motherhood. So, I traded in my traveling boots and expense account for diapers and baby talk. I have not looked back.
I did, however, began to look around, at some point. Motherhood was great, but living on one income is tough. And, my desire to have something of my own led me to begin researching home based businesses.
After researching different options, all roads seemed to be pointing me to an industry called Network Marketing, MLM or Direct Sales. It seemed to be the best option for me in terms of income potential and time freedom. But, all of the things I was reading were not positive. In fact, there were some serious negatives regarding the industry.
As I furthered my research, though, I did get excited by the stories I read about ordinary people creating extra-ordinary lives through this industry. I liked the idea of self improvement and developing my people skills further. I liked the "team concept" and the ability to improve my own life situation while helping others do the same. It seemed to be a very equitable system.
Finally, after exhausting all other business options and doing as much research as I possibly could, I decided to jump in and become a Network Marketer.
I was an extreme skeptic when I finally started in the industry. I was leery of talking to my family, friends and others and letting them know that I had joined one of those things.
One thing I knew, though - I wanted the income and the lifestyle that a Network Marketing business offered. And, I did not want to put my children in day care.
Today, after more than a decade in this industry, I have made nearly every mistake that could possibly be made, yet still managed to build a multi-million dollar business, and create a downline of thousands with several different companies.

- MLM is great as long as one knows its a business and not a get rich quick scheme. As in any field, hard work is the key to success. Most don't want to hear that. Hard work however only continues a short time then the fruits of success will follow. With a job hard work continues a lifetime with no end.
