What Is PLR and How Can It Be My Golden Egg-Laying Goose?
PLR is when you buy Private Label Rights to a product, which can be a variety of formats. Most common are articles, eBooks, and short reports. Some providers, like PLR Mini Mart, offer additional packages like the 52-week autoresponder emails with 5-page opt-in report and squeeze page graphics.
Private Label Rights allow you to take content that you paid for, alter it in any way you choose (and in fact, it's encouraged), put your name as the author and use it on the 'net in ways that help you generate traffic and sales. You can use it for your own products and services or as an affiliate promoting other people's stuff.
The problem is why this lens is being created - people either aren't putting them to good use, or don't know how! So we're going to start at the very beginning.
Every PLR provider has different terms. You have to check them carefully. For instance, at the PLR Mini Mart, you can use the $1 per page niche article packs in any way you like - on article directories, as web content, for blog entries, bundled as a bonus, or given away for free. But you're not allowed to resell them as PLR to other buyers.
Here, you'll learn about many PLR tips you can implement with your own Internet marketing strategy in any niche. From advice on how to choose a PLR product to what to do with them once you own them - it will all unfold here over time, so bookmark this page!

Targeting Products That Are Worth Your Investment
PLR Tip #1
Boy there's a lot of PLR discussions going on right now. Some people are feeling ripped off because the content was of poor quality (not mine, mind you), others confused about what to do with it once they buy it - it seems like everyone needs a little direction when it comes to the world of Private Label Rights. While the article packs at PLR Mini Mart may be cheap, it's still an investment - and you always want to make sure you get a return on whatever amount you put in, whether that's $1 a page or much, much more.
In various threads I've read, there are two HUGE issues when it comes to PLR. The first is not knowing what to do with it when you buy it, and that's something I'll be addressing as time goes on.
The second is at the starting point - finding PLR worth purchasing. Do you join a membership site or find PLR you can buy in smaller quantities? Everyone has his or her own criteria when it comes to sizing up the allure of a PLR product.
Some people want to make sure the topics are targeted to their niche. (Some don't have a niche yet, and will be happy to take whatever they see that piques their interest).
Others want to ensure the quality is top notch so that it will require very little effort to put to good use. (Then again, some people intend to use the PLR as an idea factory alone, so they don't care as much whether or not the product is viable at the get-go).
And then many focus on how many others are going to use the same fodder to feed the search engines - in other words, "How many of this particular product is going to be sold to the competition?"
I feel that your primary concerns should be...
Cost is obvious - it's PLR, so you don't want to be paying $7 per page when you could feasibly find a ghostwriter on Elance to create 100% unique content for you for the same price.
Quality depends on the type of buyer you are. Are you the kind who says he's going to alter it, but really isn't? If so, then you want the best your money can buy - because with PLR, you're passing this off as your own, and you don't want to build a poor reputation online when you're attempting to brand your business.
If you're the kind of buyer who doesn't want to do much work, but is willing to change a few things here and there, then you also want top quality. If you buy dirt-cheap because it was available and the content is a mess, you're going to have to do a full-scale revision before it's useable in the marketplace.
If, however, you're the 'net savvy individual who is going to download PLR to spark ideas and then create your own content (which is a great idea if you're working with anew niche you know nothing about), then it won't really matter what the writing style is, as long as the content is meaty enough for public consumption.
So where do you find this top notch to low quality PLR content?!
It's all over the place. You can get niche-specific PLR sites by Googling your niche name + PLR. You can buy from PLR Mini Mart and enter your custom request for article ideas. You can look in the Warrior Forum's WSO section for a constant flow of PLR products. You can also join a PLR membership site and take whatever it is they have available for you that month. The bad thing is, you can't really evaluate the content before you buy. But you can evaluate the seller. Have you seen samples of their writing skills? Do they have a reputation that makes you feel confident buying from them? Is the price right enough that if they don't offer a refund policy, you'll be okay chalking it up to a lesson learned?
If you're skeptical but think you may have found a PLR provider who meets your needs, email the seller and ask to see a sample if they have none available for your review. Also ask about other terms, like whether or not they cap the downloads. This may not matter to you if you're going to take the recommended advice and alter them by at least 30%.

How Much Do I Need to Alter PLR Products
...and How Do I Do It?
Unless you sneak into the Google complex after hours and sleuth your way into their top secret lab where they have the exact formula for this month's SEO algorithm, there's no way you can know for sure what penalties you'll incur from having duplicate content. You may not care about SEO rankings (gasp!) - you might just be trying to provide valuable content. Still, you want to be unique either way, at least to a certain degree.
Altering PLR content has one common rule - the more the better. If you use it as is, you can bet many other people will have the exact same text you do.
The least you should do is give your article a new title, introduction, and conclusion. How do you do it? Before you start altering anything, including the title, you should site down and read the article all the way through.
You might think the article is about one thing and then as you're going through altering paragraph by paragraph, you realize it wasn't what you thought it was about. An article on relationships, for example might turn out to be relationships between parents and their kids, when you assumed it would be a relationship between a man and woman in love.
The title's easy. Let's take a real life example from my PLR Mini Mart. There's an article I sell as part of a self esteem pack called When a Bad Relationship Damages Your Self Esteem.
Just think of how to say that another way. You could do it like this:How Love Causes You to Lose Self Esteem
Self Esteem Takes a Hit When Love Is Lost
Don't Let Love Victimize Your Self Esteem
Did a Relationship Ruin Your Self Esteem?
All of these are viable options that will help you stand apart from the masses who use the article as is. Now you need to move on to the introduction. There are two ways to handle the intro - you can rewrite what's there or make the existing introduction the second paragraph and add onto the article with a completely new introduction that you create.
Don't worry about not being a good writer. Introductions can have short sentences that speak broadly about a topic. So using our example, let me show you the existing introduction:
Getting involved in a bad relationship is something that a lot of people go through at one time or another. Sometimes, though, people have to endure mental abuse from their partners, which can have a negative effect on them that lasts a lifetime.
I can add a new paragraph before that which says, "When you first enter a relationship, your self esteem is flourishing. There's someone who wants you, who loves you, and your confidence level soars. But then you realize you're having more bad times than good."
Or, I can rewrite the existing introduction so that it has the same thoughts but said in a different way, like this:
Instead of:
Getting involved in a bad relationship is something that a lot of people go through at one time or another
Say this:
Everyone eventually suffers through a bad relationship.
Instead of:
Sometimes, though, people have to endure mental abuse from their partners, which can have a negative effect on them that lasts a lifetime.
Say this:
Some people wind up emotionally scarred from the mental abuse heaped onto them during this time.
You'll do the same thing with your conclusions - either add to it after the original conclusion, or alter the existing conclusion itself. If you read the article and you realize you have something to add to the message, tack it on at the end (or in the middle, if that's where it's more logical to place it).
Another tip: Whatever keyword phrase or concept you're targeting, go through and alter it wherever you see it in the article. So for instance, if you buy a PLR article on acne, and you're targeting pimples, go through and change acne to pimples. (Hint: You can do this easily in Word by clicking on Edit--> Find --> Replace and then entering Find What: Acne and Replace With: pimples.
Make sure after you do this that you go through and read it to make sure it makes sense as you're reading it. Of course if you only use PLR as a guideline and rewrite most of it, you won't need the finer details of PLR alterations. And as you get more comfortable with the title, intro, and conclusion (or keyword) changes, you might find yourself sitting down to churn out your own original content when you have the time!
Too Much PLR on Your Hard Drive?
I wanted to share a tip with you that I heard from Will Edwards of www.whitedovebooks.co.uk that he posted in the Warrior Forum. Will is a PLR customer (I have no idea if he's ever bought from me, he just buys PLR in general). Will apparently has a mountain of PLR on his hard drive.
To help him sort through it and get the most use out of it, he made a great system I thought might help
some of you guys and gals.
First, Will creates a folder on his Desktop called "Vetted-PLR" and he has a spreadsheet called PLR-Books-Data. Whenever he buys some new PLR items, he takes a look at it and fills out the information
in the Excel spreadsheet columns, which include;
Book or Article Title
Author (who sold it to you)
Date Obtained
Word Count
Well-Written (yes or no)
Good format
Graphics included
Sales page
Rights
Plan of what to do with them
Project
Ready (yes or no)
He uses this spreadsheet to organize his PLR and it helps him know who to continue buying from as well as keeps him on track for putting the PLR into action. You don't have to use the same headings in your column - you can come up with your own.
But I thought this is a worthwhile tip to share, considering I use a similar system for all of my online projects. I have a spreadsheet with pages for each project and columns of tasks I need to complete. It's a great way to stay organized and knock stuff out.

Health & Wellness It Is - Now Let's Talk Specifics
Please be as specific as possible - this will hopefully be a long-term endeavor, so get specific and it'll help me create narrow niche products for you.
By the way, I noticed dieting was separated from health & wellness - we can include that here as well since it's relevant.
