What Makes a Business Great?


It's the age old question.

What kind of criteria do we look at when we seek to find just the right program, system, opportunity, or business?

When researching, where do we go? Who has the information we need to make a informed decision?

This lens is going to help you in your journey to find and research your new business. We'll explore the best sites for researching and cataloging favorites and we'll try to weed through the hype and "negativism" so that you can clearly make the decision that right for you.

Believe it or not, not all businesses work for all people. It really does make a difference what you choose and why you think it will be the right "fit" for you.

What Things Do You Look for In a Business Opportunty?


  • Ethical - When it comes to integrity and ethics, there can be no higher criteria. Take your time and find out a little bit about the company and how it was formed. Whose behind it and what's their history in Network Marketing. You'll want to know what they use for motivation and how they use it. You'll quickly get a sense for the type of people and company you're dealing with. As always, if it sounds to good to be true...it is.

  • The Right Fit - How about "fit"? Is the company, the product, the people, and the marketing plan the right fit for who you are and how you do business? This is very important. It could be the success or failure of your business venture. You've heard the old saying you can't fit a square peg into a round hole? Well, that works here as well. Don't try to squeeze yourself into someone else's plan if it doesn't fit who you are. You'll know when the right opportunity introduces itself to you. Take your time and find the right one.

  • Longevity - As with any business, you'll want to find out if it's stable...how long has it been around and have you missed the peak positioning for this companies rise? If you're looking for a stable income that keeps your head above water or helps you plan for retirement, then any of the well established companies will do. If you're looking at an opportunity to springboard into "wealth" then you'll want a young company, past the age of it's "bumpy roads" and solid enough to hang on and thrive.
  • What Makes a Great Business

  • Stability and Financial Backing - These two run hand in hand. If a company has good financial backing; you know you'll have stability down the line. Nothing is forever, but it's important for your company to have good backing financially and to have a stable, intact management team. This means a solid future for you and your team.

  • Unique Consumable Product - Does the company you selected have a unique, viable, consumable product? Is the product good enough to keep your customers coming back and keep you wanting to sell, or at least, market it? Is it something that your customer and potential customer can see value in? The product isn't the most important driving factor, but it carries a lot of weight in your decision making process.

  • Compensation Plan - Let's talk about the compensation plan...is it laid out in such a way that you can understand it and work it? Can you see the value in this plan and does it carry you far enough into the program to make it worth your while? Is it a compensation plan that offers you multiple growth venues? This is fun and sometimes frustrating. The compensation plans can be so in depth, you need a professor to explain them. Make sure your sponsor can adequately explain their system to you.

  • What's the Cost to Start - What's the start up cost? When you're looking at beginning a new opportunity, you have to think about initial outlay. Why is this important? The amount of money you are out, will need to come back to you by way of sign-ups and sales in order to break even and push ahead. Are you paying just for product and a bit for marketing? Where is your money going? Here's what I would advise, if you're questioning whether you can make it in this business, start low, build your team and work up or just don't go there. Sometimes, it takes longer to work up, but it will save you in the long run. If you're sure about what you're doing, love network marketing, love team building then take the leap and get started with a bang!

  • Upline - Another important factor in your decision and for finding the right ingredients to success in a great business opportunity... your upline. What kind of leadership is directly above you? Fortunately, you can find out quite a bit about your leadership and support online. You can usually Google, Yahoo, or Bing their name and it should come up with something valuable with regards to their position and success in the company. You've got the time...do the research, don't let anyone rush you or push you in. This is your life and you have to make these decisions.

  • Support - You'll want to find out what kind of support you can expect from your leadership, both with the company and with your direct sponsors. Talk to them, find out if they are really in this business for success! If they are, are they including you in that journey? Find out if you can count on them, email them...do they get back with you? If you choose to call, do they return your call?

  • Training - What kind of training is offered by the company? Is it paid for or are there additional fees? Do they have company training or will you have go outside the company for good training?   • Marketing - A great company is going to allow some sort of marketing both on line and off. Most of the big companies offer a website, either for an additional fee or for free. It's necessary to begin somewhere and often times the great companies will set you up with access to business cards, magazines, catalogs, etc. Make sure the company is established enough to offer the tools you'll need for success.

    Where do you go to find the information you need?

    One site I would review is the Direct Selling Association. This top-notch site only offers membership to those companies that have passed a stringent course of evaluation and I'm sure there are fees involved, as well. It's important to remember that if your company is not there, it doesn't mean there's something wrong. Many great companies have opted out of the association for their own reasons.

    Obviously, you'll want to go directly to the company sites, read as much as you can and then start out on the "net" searching for happy and unhappy souls that have been in the business. It's important to hear both sides of the story and glean what you can from all sides. You will always find people that are "Naysayers"; some of them have legitimate gripes, but others just want to be negative. Learn to sift through the "real" concerns and find the nuggets of interest. You should definitely find more good than bad...and if the comments seem to bring up ethics quite often...dig deeper. It's a red flag of warning and you'll want to steer clear.
    What Makes a Great Business
    Visit some of the Work From Home sites and see who's talking about what. This can be a great way to break down some barriers and find super information about what's hot and what's not.

    Most importantly, trust your instincts. If it doesn't feel right to you...move away. It's not worth your time and money if it doesn't have all the elements to be a great opportunity.
