1. Get with a good support group of people learning Spanish. Support forums are easy to find on the internet. You may even find Latino support groups in your area that you can attend.

2. Immerse yourself in the language. While you are learning to speak Spanish, only watch Latino television. Only listen to Latino radio. Only read Latino magazines and newspapers.

3. Play games in Spanish. Try Spanish Scrabble. Spanish crossword puzzles. Play Spanish video games.

4. Get good instruction. Take a course at a local community college. Or take a course online. Or send away for a CD program. Or just pick up a good book at the local library. Just make sure you are learning what is current. You don't want to waste your time learning an old form of Spanish. Be sure the program is current.

5. Find a mentor. It can be someone you already know that speaks fluent Spanish or you can make a new friend. You might even want to hire a mentor. There are people that will coach you for a reasonable fee.

6. Teach someone else to speak Spanish. The best and fastest way to learn anything thoroughly is to teach it to someone else.

7. Buddy up with someone who is also learning to speak Spanish. Then make up some flash cards and drill each other on vocabulary and grammar. Make it a game with prizes and penalties. Make it relaxed and fun.

8. Take an extended vacation to a Spanish speaking country.

9. Listen to language tapes as you fall off to sleep at night. This is when your mind is very receptive to new information.

10. Watch the Spanish version of your favorite movies on DVD. Today, almost all movies released to DVD can play a Spanish version. Once you've seen the movie in English, watch it a second time in Spanish. Your mind will make sub-conscious connections you will not be aware of.

There are tons of people who want to start speaking Spanish now. There's one problem...They don't know where to begin. If you fit in this group, you are probably planning on taking lessons - however, you may want to teach yourself how to speak Spanish without lessons!

In order to learn Spanish, you have to overcome your second language learning anxiety! This is an emotional problem that hampers the abilities of many potential Spanish speakers around the world! Becoming motivated and overcoming this can, in fact, be the first step for you to be a fluent Spanish speaker!

May Believe that The older You Get, the Harder to Learn a Language - There is a common belief that advancement in age may actually hamper the ability to learn Spanish. There is no doubt that you may have to adjust when learning a different language - however, Adults are actually more than capable of learning a language.

The reason why children are believed to be better at learning languages is the simple fact that they haven't developed any mono-language habits. Their minds are open, so they are open to change. However, you can easily break these habits and learn the language you need to!

People do not believe they are capable - When people do something such as trying to learn Spanish, they have to envision themselves doing it, otherwise, they'll be absolutely discouraged.

The simple fact is; most people simply do not believe that they are mentally capable of learning a second language. If people simply believe in themselves - they'll be well on their way to learning how to speak fluent Spanish!

Watching Latino TV and listening to radio stations that speak Spanish is something that practically anybody can do. You do not need even the most basic of cable to receive the Spanish speaking stations - all you need is an antenna that can pick up television signals. When you do this, you will be giving yourself the opportunity to grow accustom to the style of the language. This includes the "speed", "pronunciation", and even certain phrases and sayings. You will begin to observe trends, etc.

When you perform one of these tasks, you may want to consider sitting down with a dictionary and trying to decipher some words that may come through the radio. When you observe that a specific word is spoken often, you may want to look that word up and translate it using your dictionary. You will be able to put sentences, paragraphs, and even full essays together by practicing on a daily basis. You may also want to combine this method with either a Spanish class, or a commercially available product that teaches you Spanish.

Self image is an extremely huge problem when it comes to trying to learn Spanish with many aspiring Spanish speakers. When you are trying to learn Spanish, you may want to consider trying a commercially available product in which you can perform at your own pace.
You also want to try to motivate yourself, as the average person has tons of daily tasks to do. You will want to use your free-time to focus on building your self image. Also you want to keep in mind the Spanish is related to other languages as well!

If you quickly learn languages such as Spanish, you may have an easier time learning other languages such as Italian and French!

There are many reasons why someone might want to learn Spanish. Perhaps you are planning a holiday or business trip to a Spanish speaking country or maybe you are thinking of emigrating. It could be that you don't really need to speak Spanish at all but you just want to say that you can. Being able to communicate in another language certainly gives you a great sense of achievement.

My reasons were a little mixed. For a long time I had wanted to learn another language, and for some reason I was always drawn to Spanish. I am not entirely sure why this was. I think one reason was because the little I knew about Spain at the time somehow appealed to my sense of good living. Sun, sand, siestas, late night dinner parties and dark skinned beautiful women! Of course there is far more to Spain than this, but for me, Spain and the Spanish language held more appeal than say French or German did.

Although I had wanted to learn Spanish for a long time I guess the main reason why I finally decided to do something about it was because I was planning a long trip to Central and South America. I was about to pass through as many as 19 different countries where the official national language was Spanish. Well that was a back in 2002. Since then Spanish and all things Spanish both in Spain and in Latin America have literally taken me over. I wouldn't have believed it then but now Spanish is a part of my every day life. I can speak, read and understand Spanish to the point where I don't have to think about it too much.

When people ask me if I can speak Spanish fluently I am always a little hesitant to say yes. The truth is that even though I can communicate in Spanish with relative ease I still don't feel that I know enough. I am not really sure if I ever will! There are always new words and phrases to learn for example and of course these vary from country to country.

I think one of the biggest tests for me is being able to sit in front of the TV with una cerveza (a beer) and watch a Spanish soap opera (una telenovela) or a Spanish movie and completely understand everything that is going on. After all, if I can do that in English why shouldn't I be able to do the same in Spanish? Well I have to say I am definitely not there yet but almost! I highly recommend 'Pasion de Gavilanes'. It's a hugely popular telenovela from Columbia. I'll talk more that this and others in later articles.

So, how did I get from not knowing a single word of Spanish (apart from - gracias and amigo), to being able to read a Spanish book, speak to a Spanish-speaking friend or watch a Spanish telenovel? Well the answer to that is what I intend to write about in the coming articles. I am not going to lie to you and say that the journey was an easy one. The truth is that learning a new language takes time and requires a great deal of patience and commitment. However, what I really want to convey at this point is that anybody can do it if they rally want to.

In the next article I intend to write about preparation. By that I mean thinking about what it is you want to achieve and how you intend to go about achieving it. You are not going to learn Spanish overnight and I think it makes sense to prepare yourself for the challenges ahead. Learning a new language should be fun and there is no reason why it shouldn't be as long as you realise your limitations.

By no means do I consider myself to be someone that has a natural flare for languages. When I went to school (all those years ago!) the only subject I failed in was French. For some reason I just couldn't get my head around it. Before I started learning Spanish I knew nothing of other languages. I started right from the beginning. I guess what I'm trying to say is, is that if I can do it then believe me anybody can.
