Wheat Grinder Info

I remember when my Grandma died she had about 10 buckets of wheat in her basement, and they were full of weevils! It was pretty nasty. I vowed at that moment that I would never ever let that happen to me.

Being a newlywed in a small 2 bedroom house I didn't have any room to store wheat let alone any other food storage items. However, we recently moved to a larger house with a great unfinished basement, so I have really been feeling the itch to start building up some food storage.

I figured the hardest thing for me would be to figure out what in the heck to actually DO with wheat. So I started asking around my church and found out one of my friends had a wheat grinder. I set up a play date for our kids and convinced her to pull out her machine.

We went to the basement and brought up a tupperware full of wheat. She tossed it in her WonderMill Grain Mill and about 30 seconds later it was ground into beautiful whole wheat flour. She sent me home with a bunch of it and a bread recipe. I made the bread that night and it was actually good!

I hit the internet later that night and discovered that a good manual wheat grinder is only about $75, and the highest rated electric wheat grinder is $239. Totally reasonable for such valuable tools!

Having that one little experience has made me WAY less skeptical about using a wheat grinder and purchasing long term food storage items in general. I decided to make this lens to hopefully spread the word that it is not that scary of a thing and shouldn't be used as an excuse not to start your food storage program.
