What are the Different Types of Manual and Electric Wheelchairs?

Manual wheelchairs can be divided into two types as can be seen in this article about rigid versus folding wheelchairs. Rigid wheelchairs are generally lighter and better performing while folding wheelchairs have the advantage of folding relatively flat so they can be conveniently put in the back of a car without removing the wheels. Rigid wheelchairs are generally the option of choice for an active wheelchair user, while folding wheelchairs are generally the option of choice for someone who is not very active. However, folding wheelchairs are constantly improving and while the difference in weight and performance is decreasing, ridgid frames are still usually recommended for active wheelchair users.
There are two types of electric powered vehicles for disabled people, power wheelchairs and mobility scooters. While they have alot in common as can be seen in this article about mobility scooters, there are several key differences. For example the turning radius of an electric wheelchair is smaller and so the electric wheelchair is more manueveable. However, a scooter looks more like a motorcycle and thus draws less attention. From the esthetics point of view, many disabled people prefer a scooter.

Wheelchair accesssories can enhance safety, convenience and/or style
* Safety: The are many wheelchair accessories which improve wheelchair safety. For example there are quality wheelchair lights, wheelchair reflectors, wheelchair spoke covers.
* Convenience: Wheelchair backpacks help wheelchair users to carry items while in their wheelchairs. Wheelchair tire covers help wheelchair users to keep their house clean. Wheelchair gloves help to protect wheelchair users hands.
* Style: Some wheelchair accessories can serve a double function. For example wheelchair backpacks are for convenience, but put reflective strip on them and they improve visibility and therefore safety. Add a reflective design and they improve style. Similarly wheelchair spoke guards are primarily for safety. But put a screen print image on them, such as planets or puppies and they enhance the style of the wheelchair. A wheelchair light will enhance safety. But if that light can also give an underglow effect, it will improve style.

You're right, the titanium can be less durable than aluminum. In fact, it's heavier than aluminum but because it's stronger they can make the chair tubing smaller diameter - hence we have a lighter chair. For any normal use it's fine. If I was a heavy-duty sports user, or like to go in the woods with my chair (I know a guy who does!) I'd go with aluminum.
Re Lasher Sport: at first glance they seem more expensive, but when you check the website you discover that they come standard with things that are all add-on's with other companies. So their price includes Frog-leg forks, and it includes the Spinergy rims (at least a $600 value by themselves) & tires of your choice, etc. The result is a very competative price for a handmade chair that is personally fitted to the user and is also a work of art in its own right.

- Hi Anne: Good comments all around. TiLite has a good reputation. I am not sure that I buy into the titanium story. I understand that titanium is more brittle and tends to crack more than aluminum. Also, Titanimum is harder and more expensive to paint, so most people tend to have drab grey chairs. But many people do like TiLite chairs. Lasher chairs look very cool. But I believe that they are quite expensive. For those who can afford it, look into it. Yes, there is valuable info from USA TechGuide! They do a good job. Thanks again for your input!

Good topic for a lens. As a 20-year wheelchair user I can recommend the following resources very highly, too. If you're looking for feedback on a huge range of wheelchairs & other equipment, with reviews by users, check out USA TechGuide
If you're looking for a good source for manual chairs, make sure you consider TiLite. They make a full line of lightweight titanium & aluminum chairs.
Another really great source is Lasher Sport. These super-lightweight chairs are made by a guy who is in a chair himself, so his designs are based on personal experience & he builds chairs for the individual. Also provides all kinds of seriously cool customization!
