Really, You Must Buy A Wheelie

The odds that an item of checked luggage will go missing is put at around 1 in 250. Fairly long odds until you realise that on average one person on each medium-sized flight will pick this very unwelcome short straw. Nowadays matters have been made even worse. More and more airlines are charging you to check your luggage.

The answer is to be clever - take no checked luggage, and instead go carry on. With a little planning and organisation, you can pack enough for even a week's vacation in a single bag. A further improvement is to pick a wheeled carry on, as pulling your luggage behind you is so much easier than carrying it.

Picking the Correct Size

Hand Luggage Guide
The Dreaded Hand Luggage Guide

It's important when choosing a wheeled carry on to ensure that the bag will fit comfortably into the overhead locker. Look for a square shaped carry on, with few extruding parts. Hard shelled carry ons are more difficult to squeeze into the locker than soft, so pick a slightly smaller size when going for a hard shell. Restrictions vary from airline-to-airline as to the precise size of luggage allowed, but a rule-of-thumb is look for a maximum 45 linear inches (linear inches is the sum of length, width, and depth). The overhead lockers were designed for 45" bags, so passengers trying to stow 52" bags often have trouble, causing Flight Attendants problems and slowing boarding. Generally, wheeled bags in the 19"-22" fit the carry on category.

Don't forget you can carry a significant amount in pockets on your person. A jacket and a pair of cargo pants can help reduce the load on your carry on.

Different airlines have slightly different restrictions on the size and weight of carry on luggage, so it is important to check these before buying. Comprehensive details about airline carry on luggage size and weight restrictions can be found at carry on luggage reviews.

Hopefully you will not have the problem demonstrated in the following video!

Key Points to Look For When Buying a Wheeled Carry On

  • Large diameter wheels In combination with a strong axle, these are tough and durable, and cope well with undulating surfaces.

  • Wheels recessed into case The wheels should be integrated into the case of the wheeled carry on. Sticking out wheels get easily caught on seats, counters, and corners, and are more prone to damage.

  • Two wheels not four The designers of the swivel carry on must be fans of George Orwell's Animal Farm (as in the mantra of the pigs, 'four legs good, two legs bad'). But despite some manoeuvrability and stability advantages, the small castor wheels are more liable to damage, and life can be very difficult over a rough floor.

  • Handle part of case framework This is normally the case, but in some cheaper models the handle recess is separate to the main frame, and is very liable to come loose.

  • Handle tall enough Short handles lead to uncomfortable stooping. If you over 6 foot, always check the handle extends to around 40-42", else you'll find you have to bend slightly when pulling the wheeled carry on.

  • Tough zip Zips should be chunky and tough. The new 'self-healing' zips can be recommended. With these, when the zip is burst open, it doesn't spell the end, as the zipper can be run over the separated portion to mend it.

  • TSA Lock If the carry on comes with a lock, make sure it is of the TSA variety, as other locks have to be removed. (On a TSA lock, a little red indicator shows when it has been opened by a TSA key).
  • Pick #3 - Wheeled Carry On Bag

Excerpt from a user review at eBags.com - 'I was very pleased with this bag - it's very roomy and packs easily. I used it as a carry-on for my last business trip to Europe. It was large enough for 5 days worth of travel (no checked luggage).'

Pick # 4 - Innovative Wheeled Carry On

    The Zuca Pro Bag

wheeled carry on - Zuca ProgThis one's a bit out of the left field. ZÜCA have redesigned the carry on for the 21st century. Developed for the frequent traveller, the ZÜCA Pro wheeled carry on is part bag, part organizer, but mostly completely indispensable. It features removable packing pouches that stack like drawers, helping you check that everything's been packed. Better yet, the ZÜCA Pro fits neatly into overheads and comes with a TSA-friendly toiletry bag.

On the road it can double up as a seat - yes it's that strong. And if you're tall, you'll especially appreciate the telescopic handle which extends to 42" - high enough to prevent any painful stooping as you pull your bag.

How a Wheeled Carry On Gets Gate-Checked.

Remember that the bag you expect to be carry on can instead be gate-checked. If you are one of the last to board the aeroplane, and the overhead lockers are full (or your bag is just plain too big), the flight attendant will take your carry on from you, label it, give you a receipt tag, and then pass the bag down to join the other hold luggage. This video shows what might happen to your carry on next!
