Growing Great Grapes Is All About Knowing When To Prune Grape Vines

Well, perhaps knowing when to prune grape vines isn't the only thing you need to know to grow grapes. New grape growers also ask questions like, "How long does it take grapes to grow?" and "Where is the best place to grow grapes?" along with wanting to know how to trim grape vines. However, get the pruning part wrong, and all of the hours you put into learning about and tenderly caring for your vines will be for naught. You just can't get a bountiful harvest if you are not trimming grape vines at the right time and in the right way.

This lens will address both how to grow great grapes and some of the resources available that can help you make them a luscious reality.

One of the best resources I've found that can help you grow grapes no matter where you live, what type of grapes you are growing, or how much experience you have growing grapes is this system:Growing Grapes At Home at growitgreen.info.

When Should I Prune My Grape Vines?

And How Much Is Too Much To Take Off?

To grow the highest quality fruit for table use or for wine making, you'll want to begin pruning your grape vines on a regular schedule once they become established.

Don't prune at all the first year. Beginning the second year, you will want to remove 85 - 90% of the previous year's growth for most types of grapes.

By leaving 10 - 15% of the old wood, you will leave the structure of your vines intact. Once your plant is about 4 years old, grapes will begin growing on the new growth off of the year old canes. By pruning heavily, you will be able to keep a nice supply of young fruit-bearing wood on your vines each season, and once your vines start producing fruit, it is off of this 1-year-old wood that they will grow.

When To Trim Grape Vines - Don't Make The Mistake Made By Many Backyard Grape Growers!

When Is The Best Time To Cut Them Back? A Simple Schedule Will Help Your Grape Vines Produce Abundant Fruit!

Your grape vines will respond the best to pruning when they are dormant, during the winter season. Pruning during a deep cold period though may harm your plants, causing the vines to "bleed". Once the sap starts running this way, it is irreversible, and may eventually weaken or kill your grape vines. So, it recommended that you prune your vines during either the early or late winter period while the plants are not actively growing and the cold is not at it's deepest for your area.

If you do not live in an area that gets truly cold you'll want to consider the time of day when deciding when to prune your grape vines. Avoid the middle of the day when temperatures are at their warmest. Your grapes will fare better if you trim the vines during the early morning or cooler evening hours.

Finally, once a year pruning is enough to keep your grape vines in good shape.

Finally, what is the mistake made by most backyard grape growers? Not pruning their grape vines at all!
