Yup, I'm Pregnant.
Morning sickness is one of those things that let you know you are pregnant, long before the pants get too tight or you have to upgrade the bra. But it is a large club--morning sickness is the most frequently reported medical complaint of pregnancy. When does morning sickness start?
When Does Morning Sickness Begin?
I Feel Fine Right Now.
Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms in early pregnancy for up to 75% of women (click for article on How Many Weeks Pregnant Am I?). Typically, morning sickness starts in the first trimester before the 6th week of pregnancy and peaks between 8 and 12 weeks.
So, When Does It End?
Morning sickness is often known as a 1st trimester condition. It often tapers off between 12 and 16 weeks, although a few unlucky ones have nausea throughout the pregnancy.

Can You Prepare for Morning Sickness?
Not strictly speaking. However, there are things in your life you can look at to see if you might be more likely.
- If you were sick during the first pregnancy or your mother was sick with her pregnancies.
- If you are carrying multiples.
- If you have a history of nausea or vomiting with birth control pills.
- If you are susceptible to motion sickness.

10 Tips for Relief of Morning Sickness

- Stay away from strong smells and tastes. You may find this out eventually, but spicy food, rich odors and lots of movement can make you feel sick.
- Eat lightly and slowly in morning. Start by nibbling on a cracker or dry toast first thing after getting up. Take your time.
- Don't eat heavy, huge meals. A full stomach can aggravate nausea. But so can an empty stomach. Eat small, simple, healthy meals frequently. Keep a snack in your purse for an "emergency snack" so you don't go hungry.
- Chew your food thoroughly.
- Eat whole grain breads and crackers.
- Stay hydrated with moderate quantities of light beverages such as water, diluted juice, or tea.
- Eat a high protein snack before bed at night.
- Try sucking a piece of peeled ginger root.
- Sniff a fresh lemon peel.
- Get a gentle massage with chamomile oil.
When Morning Sickness Gets Bad
For most moms-to-be, morning sickness, while annoying, is mild. One to 3% of women of women will experience severe nausea and vomiting that requires monitoring. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum. No matter when morning sickness starts, check with your your practitioner if you
- haven't been able to keep any food or drink down for 24 hours.
- have weight loss.
- have concentrated, dark-colored urine.
