Planning a vacation to Rome? Consider the time of year...

Spring and autumn mark the peak season & during the summer festivals and concerts fill the squares, making the summer worth the heat.

So you are planning to visit Rome in summer it's always a good idea to plan your visit as early as possible. Remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Get up and out early, take a long lunch (nap if you want) and resume your activities in the late afternoon.  Of course, staying up late is always a good idea when visiting Rome...so try to find time to sleep!

During August a lot of shops and restaurants close. This is more toward the last two weeks of August, through our experience. We visited the first week of August and didn't have any problems.During the winter, especially January thru March, expect to wait in fewer lines.

The climate in Rome is fine throughout the year though spring and fall are the best seasons.

During this time people from all over the world flock to the city to witness and enjoy everything that the Eternal City has to offer. And it's nice to know during theses seasons the weather is neither too hot nor too cold.

During spring and fall the daytime has plenty of sun, but later in the afternoon the famous Roman sunsets show off their beautiful faces to enlighten the tourists.

The summer in Rome is also very popular.  It's also very hot.  But when winter comes, you'll experience the mildest climate on earth.  It's coupled typically by some persistent rainy spells.

Getting to Rome by Air

Rome is served by two main airports. The Leonardo da Vinci Airport is approximately 26 kilometers outside the city.

You can catch up a direct train to Stazione Termini once an hour. Getting around by train is very easy and the best bargain - though we hired a driver and were glad to be sitting in Mercedes comfort after a 10 hour flight.

There are also other trains running from the airport to Ostiense, Trastevere and Tiburtina.

The second airport that has been serving Rome for years now is the Ciampino Airport. There are fewer choices available for you out here. A COTRAL bus is serving the place for those who want to connect to the subway and the Stazione Termini.

If you're renting a car, you can only take a direct trip down to the Via Appia Nuova.

Getting to Rome by Road

One of the most common modes of transportation in Rome are buses and metro. Tickets are required. The tickets are generally good not only for buses and metro, but also for transferring between the two.

The ticket, however, is only good for one metro ride. So if in case you are transferring from one metro to another bus and to another metro, expect then to obtain another ticket from the ticketing office.

Speaking of tickets, mass tansit tickets in Rome are called a BIT and cost 1 Euro.

It is good only for 75 minutes and every time you enter a bus or a metro, your ticket needs to be stamped. If you are staying overtime on your next transfer, you need to get another ticket.

There is always a taxi. The taxis usually come in white and with a light on top, indicating whether they are available or not.
