Where the Palms Grow - Celebrating Palm Trees through Poetry and Decor

The Palm Trees are Calling Us To Visit

The tropics have a draw on me that can not be described well in simple words. I have been to tropical locations such as the beaches of Mexico, the French Riviera, the coast of Morocco, Miami, Key West and San Diego, but never for any real length of time. It would be nice to get to know a place where the palms grow, a little bit better.

In Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 my husband and I took 2 extended trips to the Florida Gulf Coast - Altogether a little over 2 months where the palm trees grow. That's where I took this photo! - You'll see links to other lenses with more poetry and palm tree goodies, below. You can see more photos and get some more of my beachy impressions at Impressions of the Gulf

Along with palm tree poetry, I've selected a some palm tree items that make perfect gifts! .... I hope you Enjoy your travels!

Where The Palms Grow

An Original Poem

I live in Colorado
Where the palms don't grow
Been a few times
Down to Mexico

Peter keeps the palms
In the sunroom alive
And happy; hibiscus too
Usually they thrive

But it ain't the same
As the island life
Palms swaying, fragrant flora
Little cares, no strife

Saving up for a trip
Maybe a longer stay
Somewhere tropical
Hope that day's not far away

Daylight come and me wanna
Eat a mango,
Papaya, banana
Do the tango

In a white dress and heels
Peter dancing too
Sipping wine, having a grand
Tropical time; skies of blue

Island breeze, volcanoes
Watch which way the wind blows
Tiki glasses, listening to Sweet Leilani
Pay homage to Queen Lili'uokalani

Not a question of the grass
Being greener; just green and warm
Afternoon rains, fresh fragrance after
Sometimes, I guess a tropical storm

The South Pacific, would be fine
Or Martinique, practice French
Anywhere the palms are
Barbados, Bermuda, a coco loco quench

Palms are a symbol
Some places they're profuse like weeds
They symbolize the leisure life
Where catered to are all our needs

Just put us on a jet or ship
For a few weeks a year
Going where the palms grow
Where the ocean is blue and clear

The Flip Side of Island Magic

Around the globe, gentle tropical breezes are the norm on any given day. And so, this is still my personal vision.

The palms, the beaches, the huts, the people are also subject to the devastation of a Katrina-like cataclysm or thundering tsunami. I remember being touched and horrified by the black and white news footage of hurricane Camille with the palms bent 90 degrees to be in line with the beach. This particular footage still chills me.

The awesomeness of nature. We are at it's mercy

Funny, but I have that same draw to the beach. I have always lived in a landlocked state, so I am not sure where that comes from. I need some beach, sand and surf time really bad right NOW.
