Let's buy cheap college textbooks this semester

It's time to go back to school, time for everyone to get excited, and time to buy cheap college textbooks! Who knows what this new semester will hold? The possibilities are endless! Unfortunately, we have a little money spending to do before classes start. No, I'm not talking about new outfits and fancy backpacks or any of the fun stuff. We need to get our textbooks. Of course we haven't received our financial aid yet, so this money's going to come out of our pockets. That's fine, we'll get reimbursed right?

The fact of the matter is, whether we pay for them now, or use our student loan money, eventually we have to pay for these textbooks. That's why it's important for us to find where to buy cheap college textbooks. The first step, avoid the university bookstore like the plague! There exist far better options to buy cheap college textbooks.

What textbooks will we spend our hard earned money on?

Need to know information before we begin our search to buy cheap college textbooks:

Ok, first thing's first, which books do you need? Even if you have access to free college textbooks (if you do you'll need to open up a business), it does you no good if you don't know which books you need. Since it's this late in the year, I assume you've already registered for class? If not, you have much bigger things to worry about than where to buy cheap college textbooks, such as not getting into the classes you need! So you've registered, now:

  • Go to your university's home page and log in. Find your schedule. Does it give you a list of the books you need? Probably not, they want you to wait until the last minute so you have to buy the campus bookstore's unbelievably marked up books. If you can find a list of the books you need, great, skip the next part. For the other 99% of you, find the instructor for each class.

  • Email the instructor about what book(s) he or she will be using for the upcoming class. They never have any issue divulging this information as they couldn't care less where you get your book. They just want to make sure you have one.

Within the week you should have a nice little (or seemingly never ending) list of which books you need. This list is worth 20,000 times its weight in gold (not for actual resale). Oh, one other thing, try and get the books ISBN. This might be a little trickier to get from the instructor. If you can't, no big deal. We'll Google it.

Now for the easy part!

Just take it one step at a time

Now that we have our lengthy list of textbook names, here's what to do next.
  1. First, go to Google and type in "the name of your book" followed by "ISBN". Be sure to include the quotations. More than likely you'll find your ISBN in the first listing without even clicking on the link. Write it down on your textbook list.
  2. Next go to any of the following links. Choose whether you want to buy new or used (go with used), or if you want to rent, and then type in your new found ISBN.
  3. Save tons of money! Remember when I said that little list was worth its weight in gold? Your savings is your gold!

Guess how much the average student will spend on college textbooks this year...

Nope, guess higher...

The average student will spend over $900 on college textbooks this year! It's all due to the super college textbook publishing conspiracy. Notice how a publisher will publish a new addition every other year? If you compare the two additions, it's nearly impossible to pick out the differences. Maybe a different picture here and a different example there. Overall, it's the same book! Think about it, how many times has history changed in the last 2000 years? Not enough to need a new history textbook addition every two years. Moral of the story: don't fall prey to the super textbook conspiracy. Beat it with the steps described above and save those hard earned dollars for the finer things!
