Keeping Time

Time.
Moments in history forever captured; in a memory or on an artist's canvas or in a photographer's lens...never to be repeated, at least not at THAT particular moment. Time is passing by, right now, as you read this lens. Oops! There goes another second...and another...and another. Time won't stand still, it keeps going. It won't even slow down a little and let you catch up! So if' it's nice outside and you are sitting here on this computer, again, then you better get outside and spend some 'time'' because soon it will be winter and you'll be trapped inside your house.

What do you think of when you hear the word time? It's time to eat? It's time to go to bed? It's time to sleep? It's time to get up? It's time to go to work? It's time to go to school? It's time to go home? It's time you learn to keep time? What is the time? A proper definition of time, according to Wikipedia, is ..." a component of the measuring system used to sequence events, to compare the durations of events and the intervals between them, and to quantify the motions of objects..." Well, no matter how you define time, it is what it is. Gone. Here. Coming. Since we all have to deal with time, what better way than with some really cool time keepers..or watches...or clocks...or timepieces...

You may think that this lens is going to something some deep in-depth writing about time and time spent and time in a bottle and all that fancy, shmancy romantic stuff. But it isn't. I offer you today some pretty amazing WAYS to keep time. Simply stated...a clock. Whether it's on your wrist, around your neck, on your finger, wall or desk, in the car, at work, by your bed or in one or all of the rooms in your house or on the court house downtown or your doctor's office, this lens s about keeping time and how to do it.

How Do You Define 'Time'?

How Do You Define 'Time'?

I did some searching around, on the internet, in many search engines and here are some definitions of time that I found:

* an instance or single occasion for some event; "this time he succeeded"; "he called four times"; "he could do ten at a clip"

* a period of time considered as a resource under your control and sufficient to accomplish something; "take time to smell the roses"; "I didn't have time to finish"; "it took more than half my time"

* an indefinite period (usually marked by specific attributes or activities); "he waited a long time"; "the time of year for planting"; "he was a great actor in his time"

* a suitable moment; "it is time to go"

* the continuum of experience in which events pass from the future through the present to the past

* clock: measure the time or duration of an event or action or the person who performs an action in a certain period of time; "he clocked the runners"

* a person's experience on a particular occasion; "he had a time holding back the tears"; "they had a good time together"

* assign a time for an activity or event; "The candidate carefully timed his appearance at the disaster scene"

* clock time: a reading of a point in time as given by a clock; "do you know what time it is?"; "the time is 10 o'clock"

* set the speed, duration, or execution of; "we time the process to manufacture our cars very precisely"

* fourth dimension: the fourth coordinate that is required (along with three spatial dimensions) to specify a physical event

* regulate or set the time of; "time the clock"

* meter: rhythm as given by division into parts of equal duration

* adjust so that a force is applied and an action occurs at the desired time; "The good player times his swing so as to hit the ball squarely"

* prison term: the period of time a prisoner is imprisoned; "he served a prison term of 15 months"; "his sentence was 5 to 10 years"; "he is doing time in the county jail"

* A nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future.

* An interval separating two points on this continuum; a duration: a long time since the last war; passed the time reading.

* A number, as of years, days, or minutes, representing such an interval: ran the course in a time just under four minutes.

* A similar number representing a specific point on this continuum, reckoned in hours and minutes: checked her watch and recorded the time, 6:17 a.m.

* A system by which such intervals are measured or such numbers are reckoned: solar time.

No Clock? How Do You Know What Time It Is?

Unconventional Ways to Tell Time

We all live by the clock, right? We always have to be somewhere or you have a favorite show you want to watch or something that will require you to know the time. If you don't have a watch on or you're no where near a clock, how do you know what time it is? Well, the radio usually has news on at the half hour. Buses run on schedules, so if you know what time the bus stops at a certain place you can tell that way. If you're at home, TV shows will let you know what time it is. But those methods are OK if you're in town or somewhere public. What if you're in a place you're not familiar with or if you're hiking somewhere?

Knowing the correct time is vital to everyday life. If you're in an unfamiliar environment without any kind of clock, however, figuring out the time could be a matter of safety and survival. Without a clock or watch, finding the exact time may not be possible, but you can figure the approximate time using the sun, moon or stars.

Let's take a look at these ways to tell time:

There are three scientific ways to do this, both of which involve some
astronomy. The easiest is to simply wait until the sun is due south (in
the northern hemisphere), at which time it's high noon at your location.
With a sundial, you can extend your solar time-telling, but it's hard to do
by eye.

At night, you can tell time using the "handle" of the Big Dipper as the
hour hand on a clock - the direction it's pointing indicates the
approximate time. This is not nearly as accurate as using the sun, though.

Finally, if you have a telescope, you can look at Jupiter's largest moons.
Each has a different orbit and, by noting their relative positions as one
or more passes in front of or behind Jupiter, you can tell the time very
precisely.

Now I tried the Big Dipper method just a little bit ago and that works for the hour, but of course not for the minutes. It was pretty cool and something I never knew before.

Buy A Sundial

A sundial is a device that measures time by the position of the Sun. In common designs such as the horizontal sundial, the sun casts a shadow from its style (a thin rod or a sharp, straight edge) onto a flat surface marked with lines indicating the hours of the day. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow-edge progressively aligns with different hour-lines on the plate. (Wikipedia)
