Creating mischief of one kind and another
One evening Max creates mischief "of one kind and another" and his mother sends him to his room without supper. That night his imagination grows a forest in his room where he discovers the land Where the Wild Things Are.
Together Max and the Wild Things create mischief and have a wonderful time until Max sends them to bed without their supper, just as his mother did to him.
Max decides to leave despite their pleas, and returns home to find his supper waiting for him. Hot.
Where the Wild Things Are is a much loved book which won the Caldecott medal in 1964. Maurice Sendak also illustrated the book with magnificent pen and ink drawings that tell the story better than words.
Children will love looking at the pictures and following the story. Several pages are only pictures with no words on the pages, the rest of the text in the book is simple with only a line or two or sometimes just a couple of words to a page.
"they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws"

"At first," says Sendak, "the book was to be called 'Where the Wild Horses Are,' but when it became apparent to my editor I could not draw horses, she kindly changed the title to 'Wild Things,' with the idea that I could at the very least draw 'a thing'! So I drew my relatives. They're all dead now, so I can tell people."

The Wild Things - based loosely on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay cowritten with Spike Jonze - is about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can't control. His father is gone, his mother is spending time with a younger boyfriend, his sister is becoming a teenager and no longer has interest in him. At the same time, Max finds himself capable of startling acts of wildness: he wears a wolf suit, bites his mom, and can't always control his outbursts. During a fight at home, Max flees and runs away into the woods. He finds a boat there, jumps in, and ends up on the open sea, destination unknown. He lands on the island of the Wild Things, and soon he becomes their king. But things get complicated when Max realizes that the Wild Things want as much from him as he wants from them. Funny, dark, and alive, The Wild Things is a timeless and time-tested tale for all ages.

Create your own Wild Thing puppet show with the puppets below. Creating puppet shows was one of my favourite activities when I was growing up, and my daughters have also enjoyed doing this. Make your own or buy puppets and have someone read the story while the puppeteers act out the show.

- I've loved this book for so long and am very excited to see director Spike Jonze's vision for the movie. The trailers are looking amazing so far. Great lens. I also wanted to bring to your attention to the pop-up version of the book (engineered by the Sabuda-Reinhart duo in coop. with Sendak -- it's fantastic) because you might want to include it on this page. (:

- This is an excellent children's book. The best part is Hollywood did not ruin this movie like they do so many other books when they put them on the big screen.
