Creating mischief of one kind and another

One evening Max creates mischief "of one kind and another" and his mother sends him to his room without supper. That night his imagination grows a forest in his room where he discovers the land Where the Wild Things Are.

Together Max and the Wild Things create mischief and have a wonderful time until Max sends them to bed without their supper, just as his mother did to him.

Max decides to leave despite their pleas, and returns home to find his supper waiting for him. Hot.

Where the Wild Things Are is a much loved book which won the Caldecott medal in 1964. Maurice Sendak also illustrated the Where the Wild Things Are with magnificent pen and ink drawings that tell the story better than words.

Children will love looking at the pictures and following the story. It is quite a simple book which is great for children who are learning to read. Several pages are only pictures with no words on the pages, the rest of the text in the book is simple with only a line or two or sometimes just a couple of words to a page.

I highly recommend Where The Wild Things Are to all parents.

Where the Wild Things Are is a wonderful classic read-aloud that every family should own.

Why is Where The Wild Things a popular book?

Children love Where The Wild Things Are

Where The Wild Things Are was not well received by many in 1963 when it was published. Some were upset at the dark theme running through the book, and with the boy Max who, as a main character, disobeyed his mother.

Max chases his dog and shouts back as his mother, which causes him to be sent to his room. In 1963, this was not well received. Having an unruly child as the star of a children's book concerned parents. While this may be a more realistic view of parent and child relationships, it wasn't something parents wanted their children reading.

Of course children love the monsters and Max being King of the Wild Things. Children are allowed to fantasize and let their imaginations run wild without being preached to. Also, children identify with Max.

At the end of the book it is obvious that even though Max misbehaves, his mother still loves him. He finds his supper warm and waiting for him.

"At first," says Sendak, "the book was to be called 'Where the Wild Horses Are,' but when it became apparent to my editor I could not draw horses, she kindly changed the title to 'Wild Things,' with the idea that I could at the very least draw 'a thing'! So I drew my relatives. They're all dead now, so I can tell people."

The Wild Things - based loosely on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay cowritten with Spike Jonze - is about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can't control. His father is gone, his mother is spending time with a younger boyfriend, his sister is becoming a teenager and no longer has interest in him. At the same time, Max finds himself capable of startling acts of wildness: he wears a wolf suit, bites his mom, and can't always control his outbursts. During a fight at home, Max flees and runs away into the woods. He finds a boat there, jumps in, and ends up on the open sea, destination unknown. He lands on the island of the Wild Things, and soon he becomes their king. But things get complicated when Max realizes that the Wild Things want as much from him as he wants from them. Funny, dark, and alive, The Wild Things is a timeless and time-tested tale for all ages.
