After years developing this set, it was released in 1956 by Herman Miller and celebrated the 50th anniversary in 2006, by producing some in Palisander Rosewood veneer. The construction is of 3 shells made with 7 layers of plywood in a variety of attractive wood finishes, and thick urethane foam upholtered in rich leather. The EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR AND OTTOMAN is without doubt one of the icons of MODERN DESIGN.

The AALTO LOUNGE CHAIR 43 designed by Alver Aalto

Without a doubt Alvar Aalto was one of a few pioneers of modernism and indeed referred to by many people as being the father of modernism. He was born in Finland in 1898 and died in 1976, and during his lifetime was very influential to other modernist designers. His idea of opening up the closed loop frame in order to give a spring and bounce effect to his chair frames was extremely difficult in wood, but managed to achieve this in 1932 using laminated birch.
