Average Whistler Snow Conditions
Whistler's average snowfall changes from year to year. Due to El Nino, the past seven years has seen warm and dry Whistler weather.
However, with the return of La Nina, Whistler's weather promises much more snow, and cooler weather.

El Nino vs. La Nina
The Historic Struggle that Determines Whistler's Weather
In part, Whistler weather is determined by the cycle of La Nina replacing El Nino, and El Nino replacing La Nina. After a 7-year absence, La Nina finally returned to western Canada in the Fall of 2007 to replace her brother, El Nino.
As a result, Whistler weather in 2007/2008 was much cooler and wetter than it was for a long time.
El Nino causes fairly warm and dry winters. Defined as a sea-surface temperature anomaly greater than 0.5°C, El Nina results in very conservative snowfalls.
La Nina, having the opposite effect to El Nino, occurs when the strength of normal patterns of trade wind circulation in the pacific ocean increases. This lowers the average temperature of the Pacific Ocean by more than 0.5°C.
What does this mean?
Since the Pacific Ocean is the regulator of temperature for the west coast of Canada, La Nina brings cooler and wetter Whistler weather.
