About White Perch

white perch

White perch are small but tenacious fish that live along the mid-atlantic coast of North America in brackish waters such as rivers, creeks and bays.

White perch prefer water with about 18% salinity but can live in environments that range from fresh water to fully saltwater. These hardy fish have been known to live over 15 years.

The fish are caught with small baits such as grass shrimp or bloodworms, or by casting artificial lures or flies.

Other excellent perch baits are the processed products such as Fishbites or Berkley Gulp baits.

Perch can be caught year round, even thru ice. They school up to spawn in early spring and can be caught in large numbers.

Live Bait for White Perch

Live baits for yellow perch include minnows, bloodworms, nightcrawlers, earthworms, grubs, grass shrimp, soft crabs, peeler crabs, fiddler crabs and other baits. These vary with season and location. Fishermen choose live baits depending on availability and personal preference.

Anglers will find fresh bait in local tackle shops including grass shrimp, blood worms, night crawlers, live minnows, peeler crabs, soft crabs and others.

A small cast net, umbrella net or seine can be a great asset for anglers that prefer to catch their own grass shrimp, live minnows or other small fish. Another possibility is a minnow trap, which is baited and left overnight. This is a good option for fishermen that are staying near an estuary for a few days.

Brackish water anglers may find grass shrimp to be the perfect perch bait. These small, clear bodied shrimp are the main diet of white perch in tidal rivers and bays. They are best fresh but can also be brined and frozen.

Maryland Record White Perch Caught!

John Williams of Pasadena, Md. was fishing in Loch Raven Reservoir on Saturday April 5 when he hooked and landed a new freshwater state record white perch. John, accompanied by his brother and a friend, was targeting crappie using a shad dart minnow combination when he caught the sizeable perch.

"I knew it was a good fish, but was surprised when it turned out to be a large white perch," Williams said. "We put in the ice chest with our other fish and I was thinking of fillets for dinner, but my brother kept saying 'that is one whopper of a white perch - you should get it weighed.'"

Upon consulting the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website, Williams decided to have his fish weighed at Clyde's Sport Shop in Baltimore, an official citation center. Weighing in at 1.62 pounds and measuring 14.25 inches long, Williams' catch broke the previous freshwater white perch record - also caught at Loch Raven Reservoir - of 1.5 pounds, caught by Ross Galeano in September 2006.

"Mr. Williams' white perch catch illustrates Maryland's superb freshwater fishing opportunities," said Fisheries Service Director Tom O'Connell. "This is especially true of Loch Raven Reservoir, a pristine locale in the heart of Baltimore County."
