Whitetail Deer Hunting | Learning The Habits of The Whitetail

There are a number of ways to learn about the habits of the whitetail deer in your area. Before you get started though I would strongly recommend for you to get a notebook of some kind and document everything you learn. Next get a topographical map of your hunting grounds or draw your own map in your notebook. At some point you will take all this information and put it together to produce an effective plan of action for your next hunting season.

Basic Habits to Start Observing

  • Available feeding areas ~ look for apple trees, nuts, farmers fields, grassy meadows

  • Bedding areas ~ look for areas of matted grass or snow in a semicircle.

  • Hunting pressure ~ too many hunters in a given area will push deer into more secluded, thicker sections of the woods

  • Weather patterns ~ the whitetail deer will change typical routine to adjust to some weather pattern.

  • Escape and protection areas ~ transition areas used to escape predators when feeding in meadows and corn fields

You can start learning about how these variables affect the deer patterns by talking with professional white tail deer hunters in the area, local sporting goods store owners and talking with local farmers. This will give you a good start and an idea of what to expect when hunting in any particular area. Remember to document what you learn then, and most important, is to get out in the woods and do your own scouting.

TIP:Not all hunting property will hold Trophy Buck. Genetics and hunting pressure play a big part in this. If your main goal is to bag a Monster Buck you will want to check this out first.

Tip: Pay close attention to the number of hunters in your hunting area. If their is a lot of pressure go off the beaten path where the other hunters don't go. You may have to walk a little further or hunt in thicker woods but if you do what other wont you will succeed when others don't.
