Wordsworth wrote his best poetry at Dove Cottage Grasmere, Lake District
Rydal Water is pictured here.
Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake, pictured below, were sources of inpsiration to Wordsworth and the Lake District poets.
In December 1799 Wordsworth moved to Dove Cottage , Grasmere, where he wrote his most highly regarded poetry.
He lived with his sister, Dorothy, whose Journal is a fascinating insight into life at Dove Cottage. William and Dorothy discussed many ideas, and she was a great source of help and inspiration to the poet.
After his marriage to Mary, the Wordsworths continued to live at Dove Cottage with Dorothy, until May 1808. They then lived in other houses in Grasmere, where they were not happy.
In 1818 they moved to Rydal Mount, at Rydal, 3 miles from Grasmere, and this became their much loved family home. All the homes Wordsworth lived in were rented.
Still wanting to keep a foothold in the Grasmere Parish ( it gave him a vote on local affairs) , he bought White Moss House for his son, Willie in 1827. It is the only house Wordsworth ever owned.
White Moss House stayed in the Wordsworth family till the 1930s, and has been in my family since 1970.We have lived at White Moss House since 1981.
We now run it as a friendly historic B & B guest house, ideally located in the centre of Wordsworth's Lake District.

Cockermouth Floods November 2009
Torrential rain floods this historic market town in Cumbria
Worst hit was Cockermouth, usually a peaceful Riverside town, the birthplace of William Wordsworth.
Its seems that some parts of Cumbria have had 13 inches of rain in 24 hours- the highest 1 day rainfall ever recorded in England.
One brave local policeman has lost his life helping others. Our hearts go out to all those who knew him.
Update, 7 December; the area is now trying to clear up after the floods, but many homes, shops and businesses will not be back to normal for some time.

Inside Dove Cottage
Where Wordsworth wrote some if his best poetry

In the summer the small windows don't let in much light.
Whenever I visit I'm amazed by how small it is. When Wordsworth married and had a family he moved out ( his sister Dorothy always went with them) and lived in various houses in Grasmere before settling at Rydal Mount for the rest of his life.

Traditional Lake District Rushbearing Ceremonies
Many Lakeland Villages have a special Rushbearing each year
Dating back to the times when the local church would have a mud floor, and each year fresh rushes were picked from the lakes to lay on the floor. Some Lakeland Villages, including Grasmere and Ambleside, honour this old tradition with a Rushbearing Day each year. The whole village takes part. Traditional "bearings" are carried to the church, with the children carrying smaller bearings.
In Grasmere the Rushbearing Maidens are a pretty sight!
Grasmere has a huge beautiful painting of Rushbearing, currently in the village hall ( only opened up to view on special occasions)
Ambleside and Grasmere have both had their rushbearings for 2009- both were blessed with sunshine!
In Ambleside there is a wonderful Rushbearing Mural in St Mary's Parish church.
