My Favorite Christmas Movie

The Christmas Season would not be Christmas for me if I did not watch the classic movie A Christmas Carol. As odd as that sounds, from Thanksgiving Day to Christmas Day, I spend most of my time watching the different versions of this classic film. As far as movies or stories are concerned, this is without a doubt my favorite, favorite one!!

I love the Victorian Feel the movie has. I love the theme, the different versions and mostly, the lesson taught in this film. I know for a fact that I am not the only one who feels that way because since Charles Dickens wrote the story, it is has been known to bring the true meaning of Christmas into the lives of many.

An Angel Box

type=textWhen I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a Brownie or a Girl Scout. But because of finances I was never allowed to join either, not to mention we were never in one place for very long. One time during our stay in a little town; I attended a Sunday School Class and they were having a "Mission Weekend Camping Trip"! I had never been camping before so I did not have one piece of camping equipment, but the people sponsoring this Mission Trip had extra supplies so they had stuff I could use. I cannot remember if there was a charge for the weekend or not, but somehow I was able to go. I earned a little Mission badge to sew on my shirt, it was one of the proudest days of my life!

When I was exploring around Squidoo the other day, I noticed that Jewelsofawe had written a lens called: The Path to a Mission. This is a blurb in the opening of the lens:

This lens is about my daughter and her mission trip she wants to go on. It will be on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.

She goes to a Christian school and she is trying to get enough money to go to this mission with some of the students at her school. The trip will be in March. She is doing a number of different things to earn the money to go there.

They will be going to a small school on the island. They want to spread the Word of God.

The second I read that opening, it took me back to the day when I went on my Mission Camping Trip. Then my thoughts went to - Wouldn't it be wonderful to try and help Jewels daughter raise a few extra dollars, and what better way to do that then to put up an Angel Box and have Santa Claus spread the word!! The link to the lens is: The Path to a Mission If you get a moment, please stop by and take a look around, it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for a child for many reasons!!

Merry Christmas!!

Editorial Reviews

This is the desert-island choice of the many versions of A Christmas Carol, with a magnificent, full-bodied portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge by Alastair Sim that leaves everyone else in the dust. Lean and direct, this film's version of the story wastes no time trying to impress viewers with the magical nature of the spirits' visitations. Director Brian Desmond Hurst keeps the focus on Scrooge's life story, beautifully simplifying and underscoring the theme of lost women with a haunting musical refrain from the folk song "Barbara Allen." Sim's commitment to the role is at times astonishing; his Scrooge's Christmas-morning ecstasy is a marvel of giddy technique. Watch for Patrick Macnee (Steed in The Avengers) as the young Jacob Marley--the actor made his screen debut in this 1951 production. --Tom Keogh

A Christmas Carol By: Charles Dickens

A Christmas Carol is a Ghost Story of Christmas. It was written by Charles Dickens in 1843. This book became so popular so fast that in the first week it sold over 6,000 copies. Over time A Christmas Carol has become one of the most popular and enduring Christmas stories of all time.

Some historians have implied that its popularity played a significant role in redefining the importance of Christmas, bringing forth the "Spirit" of the holiday. Poet Thomas Hood said, "If Christmas, with its ancient and hospitable customs, its social and charitable observances, were in danger of decay, this is the book that would give them a new lease."

I tried to do a search to find out exactly how many different versions of the movie there was, and the closest I could come was fifty five different versions. However on Amazon when I put in to the search engine "A Christmas Carol" it showed 293 different searches? So I am not sure at this moment I would be able to quote a correct number. I know on one search that showed 55 version, there were some not listed that I am personally familiar with; "Ebby" being one of them.

Ebenezer Scrooge a stone hearted man who cares for nothing except for accumulating wealth; has no friends and only a dismissive nephew who is his only living family named Fred and one hard working employee named Bob Cratchit. Scrooge is intolerant of Christmas and is visited on Christmas Eve by a ghost who is his deceased business partner Jacob Marley. Jacob Marley warns Scrooge that he must change his ways or be beset by chains for the rest of eternity.

During that very night, Scrooge is visited by three spirits: Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come. It is during these visitations Scrooge is shown how the past has brought him to this present and if life continues the way it is, how his future could look.

"Ghost of the Future," he exclaimed, "I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear you company, and do it with a thankful heart. Will you not speak to me?"
