Earth Day Projects
Earth Day is April 22, and often we wonder what we can do to celebrate it on that day. The question is do we really need to wait until April 22, to celebrate such an important event? Most people will answer No to this question, because so many more people are becoming aware of all of the things that we can do as a "Whole" to help the earth's environment.
The way I view things are; "if we can remember to start with one small contribution to helping the Earth, the second step and every step after that becomes easier and easier."
Did you just following these easy first steps can save you money, energy and help the environment?
-By using CFL and LED's lightening and also turning off lights when you are not using them, can save you at least $200 a year plus save energy
-By utilizing window shades and blinds, you can save on heating bills and air conditioning bills
-By being more aware of the water you use; you can save money and help the Earth
-By using your kitchen waste, lawn clippings and leaves for compost, you can help the landfills plus have something wonderful for your garden and yards.
**Please note: there are many questions as to add meat scraps to your compost pile. I personally do not do that because animals have a great sense for "Meat" and will try everything to get into your compost pile**
If you were to start with just one of these four things, you would be amazed at the savings.

Lets just play for a moment...
Be very honest and answer truthfully....
Where in the world can you start to help the environment?
Something really simply and easy is LightBlubs.....
By turning out the lights when you leave a room, you can save a lot of energy. By replacing just five incandescent bulbs with CFLs light bulbs you can save you $200 a year. Now I personally use this kind of light bulb instead of regular light bulbs. And I know I have SAVED money on my electricity bill. They really are not that expensive for the usage you get from. And it is a win-win situation because you save money and you help the environment by saving electricity.I use night lights at my house everywhere! And I use the LED's night lights that I purchased almost three years ago and they are still working.
Okay this is a pretty easy to begin to be Earth friendly right? To recap: (1) Turn off the lights when you leave a room (2) Try to use CFL lighting and (3) try using LED night lights...

I really found this to be interesting.....
In the winter, when your heat is on, leave your shades and blinds open on sunny days. This way you can gain some natural heating, therefore not making your heater work so hard. At night close them to reduce the heat being lost through the windows. In the summer, close your shades and blinds when the air conditioner is on. Try to use light colored blinds so it does not attract the heat to the windows. If I open my window blinds in the summer (usually in the morning) I will open them but leave them turned upward so the light does not shine in directly.
I know these are all simple, simple things but honestly every penny you can save helps and in the process you are helping the environment. Here are some other very easy things you can do to contribute to living eco-friendly:
Plant trees around your home. By doing this you can reduce cooling cost by up to 50% and also a tree can offset a lot of carbon over its lifetime.
Wash your clothes in cold water. By doing this you can save $400 a year on your electric bill.
Place your computer in sleep mode when you are away from it.
Cover your floors with rugs to retain the heat.
Use dehumidifiers and ceiling fans in the summer. I purchased my dehumidifier from Amazon and it was very inexpensive and it works wonderfully. On ceiling fans you can also run them in the winter just be sure to flip the switch on the fan to draw the heat upward.
Blinds and Shades oh my.....

Want to know something else you can do that is so easy?
When you wash dishes follow some simple suggestions:If you use a dishwasher, only wash full loads and use short cycles (except for dirtiest dishes)
From my research with most dishwashers today, there is no need to pre-wash dishes before washing them in a dishwasher? Since I have never used a dishwasher in my life, I do not know enough about this to elaborate much.
Wait are there still people who do not use them? Yep, I can honestly say that I do not think I have ever used a dishwasher in my life. To save water I wash a load of dishes- then rinse them off. Many times people will allow the water to run while they are washing dishes. Do you know how much water is being drained away? If have to pay for the water you use, experiment for two months. One month do dishes the normal way you do them, the next month be more conservative and only run the water after you have a few washed dishes in your sink.
Some additional water saving tips and facts:
-In the past half century, the US population has doubled, but the demand for water has more than tripled, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
-By turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth, you can save 240 gallons of water a year.
-By taking short showers which use 10-25 gallons of water oppose to taking a bath which uses 70 gallons of water.
-When you have a dripping faucet, over 3,000 gallons of water is wasted a year.
Biodegradable cleaning products....
Okay, I will admit, I love "Method" products.....
Do you garden?
Okay, do not freak out about compost...
Compost is one of nature's best mulches and soil amendments, and you can use it instead of commercial fertilizers. Best of all, compost is cheap.Currently my husband and I do not own our own land, but I have to have my garden. So I grow my vegetable organically in pots. AND I have a container that I am making compost in. Now, when you are making dinner and cutting up all of those vegetables, what do you with the parts that you do not use? When you cook eggs for breakfast, what do you do with the egg shells? If you drink coffee or herbal tea, what do you do with the coffee grounds and loose herbs? Every bit of this can go into a compost pile or container. It will be a wonderful treat for your plants, and help the environment from not having to deal with that amount of trash. Okay, so you are thinking, big deal...what is a few vegetable peels and egg shells here and there! Well, about one third of the space in landfills is taken up with organic waste from our yards and kitchens. All of this material can be used in compost.
Please keep in mind, I am offering very simple, very easy solutions to a huge problem with our enviroment. Without sounding like a commerical, if a million people started a compost pile or container think of how much trash the enviroment would not have to decompost. We would be helping in one tiny way and in turn we would gain greatly from it.

Interesting Facts....
In todays newspaper-April 20, 2008
As we have come to realize in recent years, ours is a planet that's also quite fragile.Warnings of global warming, pollution from eletronic gear, water shortages and unpredictable weather patterns. Headlines in recent months remind us that we live in a delicate ecosystem, a world with limited capacity to absorb our society's waste and pollutants.
But there's a new attitude emerging a spirit of resolved and responsibility. It's about recognizing the need for environmental initiatives. It's about adopting recycling efforts and energy saving practices.
It's about making a difference in our communities, to shaping a better world through volunteerism, conservation and smart, thoughtful practices. It's about Green Living!
Facts about Trees
Did you knowIf you planted a tree every year: What better way to celebrate Earth Day or whatever your favorite day of the year is, than to plant a tree. Did you know that trees are the lungs of our planet? They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores cellulose in the woody parts and releases oxygen in its place. About half of the greenhouse gases that are causing global warming are carbon dioxide emissions.
How do trees help to keep our air clean?
-One single mature tree absorbs 50 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and produces enough exygen to sustain two adults.
-If every family planted one tree a year it would remove a billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.
-A mature tree can absorb 120-240 pounds of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides and particulate pollutants from diesel fuel per year.
-Trees are natural air conditioners. One large healthy tree has a cooling effect of a 10 room size air condition running 20 hours a day.
-Trees absorbs sounds.

All it takes is a little planning to make a HUGE difference
1-instead of tthrowing your vegetable peels away try composting them. You can start a small compost pile in small containers if your space is limited.
2. Try using coupons and when you are done with the newspaper, take them to the recycle bin and/or use them to kill weeds in your garden. Only use the black and white print not the color.

- This is a truly practical lens. Your tips are easy to implement. I agree with you: Let's not celebrate Earth Day once a year. I'm all for a less commercial celebration of caring for our planet every day, in simple, yet powerful ways. Appreciate your focus on how it's the little things that add up and count most. Thank you!

- This is a great idea! Thanks for allowing us to add our green links. One of the biggest things I suggest to people is to save containers and reuse them for leftovers. Cottage cheese, sour cream, bread bags - these all can be reused for other food products and will save you money in the process.

- What a great lens. Earthday is indeed every single day and also, by practicing peaceful living, our carbon footprint is greatly reduced. Being Vegan means consuming less water and allowing our voiceless companions life. This is the greatest gift of Earth Day! Non-Vegetarians consume about 176 cubic feet of water per day. By consuming less meat (or none) peace is promoted and valuable water resources are conserved. Please be so kind as to visit my other squidoo lens on peaceful living Prolifereality and thank you. Happy 2009 to you all!

- I think when I was in middle school we actually had a day off school either on Earth Day or sometime in the spring to go clean up around town. That was the 1970's when Earth Day first got started. We had to have a paper signed to prove we did something. 5*
