PTSD-Post Tramatic Stress Disorder
I have recently had the pleasure to be the little sister to a wonderful person name LadyHawk from the WOSIB group (Women of Strength & Inner Beauty) that I belong too. It is through my connection with her that has lead me to write a Lens about this horrible disorder. LadyHawk, this is done in honor of you and all of the others survivors of this disorder!
PTSD-Post Tramatic Stress Disorder
What is PTSD?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Posttraumatic stress disorder· Mental HealthPost traumatic stress disorder[1][2] (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more terrifying events in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened.[3] It is a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to an extreme psychological trauma.[4] This stressor may involve someone's actual death or a threat to the patient's or someone else's life, serious physical injury, or threat to physical and/or psychological integrity, to a degree that usual psychological defenses are incapable of coping. In some cases it can also be from profound psychological and emotional trauma, apart from any actual physical harm. Often, however, the two are combined.
PTSD is a condition distinct from traumatic stress, which is of less intensity and duration, and combat stress reaction, which is transitory. PTSD has also been recognized in the past as shell shock, traumatic war neurosis, or post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS).

Herbs for PTSD
As I have been reading this morning about PTSD, I kept thinking about herbs that may aid in helping to take the edge off of the nervousness. I am not an expert, nor am I making any medicial claims, but I feel I must list a few herbs and oils that I have used to take the edge off of some of my own nervousness when stress is involved. If you are thinking about trying an alternative method of healing be sure to talk to your regular doctor first especially if you are taking any kind of prescription drugs.
Using Herbs
Catnip-Insomnia, sedative, mild nerve stimulant
Chamomile-Relaxing, calming nerves, sleep
Gotu Kola-nervous conditions, depression
Kava-Kava-reduces stress-related anxiety
Lavender-Relaxant, nervousness
Lemon Balm-depression, migraines
PassionFlower-Nervousness and insomnia
Skullcap-Relaxant, nervous conditions, headaches
Valerian Root-Nerve disorders, sedative effect
Vetivert-Reduces stress, tension
You could use a few of these herbs and make a tea. As an example I would take:
2 teaspoons of Chamomile
2 teaspoons of Lemon Balm
1 teaspoon of Passionflower
1 teaspoon of Vetivert
1/2 teaspoon of Skullcap
Bring to a boil, 1-quart of distilled water. Pour over the herbs and cover container for 10-15 minutes. Strain out the herbs and pour yourself a cup, if you wanted too you can add a little honey or sugar. Just sit back, relax and joy. This can be drank hot or cold, I drink tea both ways
Using Oils
I use aromatherapy everyday. I believe in the scents of the oils and what they can do to help me relax. Here is a list of some oils for relaxing. I usually use a few drops of oils in tea lite candles.

She is a survivor of childhood abuse and author of "Heal and Forgive"
PTSD and MEFor me this is a very vulnerable post, but I also think it is an important one. Dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was another significant aspect of my recovery from abuse.
For many years, my PTSD went undiagnosed. I didn't understand the origins of many powerful and terrifying feelings. Even after diagnosis, I didn't know I was experiencing PTSD until after the symptoms went away. Learning to identify my feelings of terror and impending doom as PTSD - while I was experiencing them - helped my healing process tremendously.
During young adulthood, my PTSD episodes were extremely dramatic. They quite literally threw me back to the past - seeing before me people, places, and terrifying events from my childhood, rather than the innocuous event in the present. I remember one flashback where I instinctively leaped wildly over a porch railing, down a small embankment and landed with a thud in the soft dirt of the ground beneath.
These imaginary episodes were swift, violent, and ended as quickly as they started. They left me shaken and confused......

Valuable and important lens, Dear One. Accepting this condition is the key to eliminating the symptoms. PSTD literally saved my life. It made me react to a life-threatening situation unconsciously, quickly, and powerfully. It is the only reason I am alive today (besides God, of course). I gained an absolute confidence that I can protect myself from ANY attacker. Posted July 21, 2008 |
