My Homemade Soy Candles Business

Recently, I have been experimenting with different things and with the new season here I wanted to expand my eCrater business. So, I invested the money and decided to add a new product which is hand poured soy wax candles. Not only are these candles handmade but they are also very eco-friendly! I added this product to my already established business but decided to open up a new eCrater storefront just for them. So this lens is being created to promote this new business.

Many years ago, when my business mainly revolved around me making homemade herbal products, I also made herbal candles. At that time, I used paraffin wax and made only votive candles that could easily be used. I was looking more at the therapeutic aspect of the candle oppose to the Green aspect of them.

I have been researching soy wax and came to the conclusion that these are without a doubt my favorite candles. When my husband and I take weekend trips to the mountains, we always go into this little store that sells Soy Wax Candles and we purchased one to burn in our hotel room for the weekend. I love them then, and now that I am making them, I love them even more.

Come and take a look around at WhiteOak's Soy Candles

Why Soy Wax?

Soy wax is all-natural made from the soybean plant, which is grown in the United States. In the process of separating the soy meal and the oil, nothing is wasted. The oil goes through a process called partial hydrogenation which turns the oil into a soft wax. The meal is processed into animal feed and food for humans.

Soy wax is non-toxic and safe for everyone, including pets. It burns very clean producing 95 percent less soot than paraffin wax. This means your containers will not turn black from the soot and your air will be cleaner because soy will not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere. Soy burns evenly with a steady flame and it is very absorbent which means it can hold larger amounts of fragrance oil oppose to paraffin. I have noticed that even when my candles are not burning, I can still smell the scent.

One of the things I cannot stand is when wax gets on your furniture or stuck in your candle holders and it becomes very difficult to clean it up. Soy wax cleans up better than paraffin; all it takes is a little warm water and soap.

Different Sizes, Different Scents

When you begin a new project, especially one you plan to sell, there are a lot of experiments to go through before you market your product! Sometimes it is a hit and miss situation and it takes a lot of determination to keep going forward. First there is a huge market that already exists for Soy Candles. I have seen prices range all over the place; there are so many different containers, different sizes and different scents. How in the world do you begin? How in the world do you decide what size to make, what scents to make and how in the world do you set your prices?

Here is how I came up with some of my own decisions. I took the memories of how much I enjoyed the candles my husband and I purchased in the mountains to burn in our hotel room, I took my experience with aromatherapy and I took into consideration the holidays that are approaching and honestly that is how I started this brand new adventure.

I had to pace myself because I hate to have a lot of seasonal products on hand or in stock. So I decided if an order came in for more candles than I had in stock, I could make an order up pretty quick. Plus, I keep my stock down because I want my candles to be as fresh as possible.

To Celebrate Autumn, I have three scents that I make: Pumpkin Souffle, Macintosh Apple and Vanilla Hazelnut. For Christmas as far I have: Holly Berry, Gingerbread House and Cranberry Marmalade. I will be explaining the scents I have and the sizes I decided on in the following modules.

6 oz. Soy Candles

These candles come in a 6 oz. jar with a gold lid. I decided on these because they make the perfect holiday size candle! The scents I carry for 6 oz. are:

Lavender: Lavender is very calming and relaxing scent. This lavender is an enchanting scent with springs of lavender; I added just a small touch of vanilla.

Honeysuckle and Jasmine: The Honeysuckle and Jasmine has a Beautiful Floral scent with Honeysuckle being the dominate scent.

Very Vanilla: If you love vanilla, you are going to love this one. Vanilla is a very relaxing, sensual scent. This scent makes a wonderful candle to use during those romantic dinners.

Holiday Scents

Vanilla Hazelnut: Autumn to me would not be the same without burning Vanilla Hazelnut candles. There is something so unique about this combination that I honestly burn them all of the time during the Autumn Season. This is one of my own personal favorite scents.

Holly Berry: If you like a pine scent for the holidays, you will enjoy this candle a lot. It is a mixture of fresh berries and fir trees. I believe it is one of those perfect Christmas scents.

Gingerbread House: This Christmas Scent reminds me of the family gathering together to build a Holiday Gingerbread House. It is a combination of vanilla frosting, cinnamon sticks, graham crackers and raisins with natural essential oils including Clove. This scent reminds me of walking into a kitchen where fresh baked cakes were just made.

Cranberry Marmalade: Cranberry Marmalade is a fantastic scent with a blend of tart cranberries, spiced apples and orange peel. It is infused with natural essential oils including cinnamon, clove and orange. This scent just reminds me of Christmas, even my husband liked it a lot! I have colored the wax so the candles are a cranberry color.

4 oz. Traveling Tins

This is the size that I purchased in the mountains. They really are the perfect size for altars, the bathroom and bedroom.

Peppermint Eucalyptus: The Peppermint and Eucalyptus is a very strong scent that is fantastic for aromatherapy uses for stuffy noses and relaxation. When I light this candle, I can smell it throughout each room, but have always believed in the healing properties of aromatherapy so I do not mind the strong scent at all.

White Tea Berries: This scent has a very clean crisp smell to me. It is a combination of herbal tea and dew covered raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries.

Mimosa and Mandarin: This unique scent is topped with scents of mandarin oranges, tangerines and sweet berries. The heart combines a medley of pineapple, mimosa blossoms, peaches, and plums, fruity jasmine and soft lavender. The base is a beautiful lily and vanilla.

Green Tea and Lemongrass: This candle has a very unique scent. It has a natural scent of citrus with notes of orange Valencia, bergamot tea and plum wine. The heart combines jasmine, violet, lavender and orange flowers. This would be a perfect scent to burn while relaxing in a hot tub or a bubble bath. This is one of my favorites!

Black Cherry: This scent is very unique and is one of my husband's favorites. It has a sweet blend of vanilla and ripe cherries with a slight pinch of spicy clove.

Very Vanilla: If you love vanilla, you are going to love this one. Vanilla is a very relaxing, sensual scent. This scent makes a wonderful candle to use during those romantic dinners.

Holiday Scents

Pumpkin Souffle: Pumpkin Souffle has the scent of fresh pumpkin- with notes of butter, sugar, and spices. Fantastic autumn scent to use all the way through Thanksgiving!

Macintosh Apples: Macintosh Apples has an incredibly strong fragrance that smells like apples that came right off of the tree. Fantastic autumn scent! I have given a few away as samples, they feedback I have received has been wonderful. This scent has the crisp scent of a fresh apple it is hard to explain.

Vanilla Hazelnut: For me the Autumn would not Autumn without burning Vanilla Hazelnut candles. There is something so unique about this combination that I honestly burn them all of the time during the Autumn Season.

Honeysuckle and Jasmine: The Honeysuckle and Jasmine has a Beautiful Floral scent with Honeysuckle being the dominate scent

Lavender: Lavender is very calming and relaxing scent. This lavender is an enchanting scent with springs of lavender; I added just a small touch of vanilla.

Golden Rose: This Golden Rose scent is one of the most beautiful rose scents I have smelt. Imagine walking out to your garden early morning and smelling your sweet yellow roses; that is what this scent reminds me of. It is not overpowering at all.

2 oz. Sample Soy Candles

When I do a batch of candles if I have some wax leftover I do not throw it away! I decided to make sample size candles. Actually, these would make great little gifts for baskets, Christmas Stockings, Friendship gifts.. the list is endless. But my main thought process was finding a way to use my left over wax and for people to be able to smell the candle before they purchase a bigger size.

This will be growing daily as I make candles.

Honeysuckle and Jasmine: The Honeysuckle and Jasmine has a Beautiful Floral scent with Honeysuckle being the dominate scent.

White Tea Berries: This scent has a very clean crisp smell to me. It is a combination of herbal tea and dew covered raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries.

Gingerbread House: This Christmas Scent reminds you of the family gathering to build the Holiday Gingerbread House. Its scent is a combination of vanilla frosting, cinnamon sticks, graham crackers and raisins with natural essential oils including Clove.

Holly Berry: This Christmas Scent reminds you of the family gathering to build the Holiday Gingerbread House. Its scent is a combination of vanilla frosting, cinnamon sticks, graham crackers and raisins with natural essential oils including Clove.

Peppermint Eucalyptus: The Peppermint and Eucalyptus is a very strong scent that is fantastic for aromatherapy uses especially for stuffy noses and relaxation. When I light this candle, I can smell it throughout each room.
