Who doesn`t love parrots

About our life

Story of my parents before I was born:
They both really love animals, specially parrots. My dad had a lot of animals, when he was younger....he had a woodpecker,an owl,a dog, stream crabs, smooth newt,frogs...he brought home everything he could. When he met my mom,he realize that they share the same passion for animals.Later they had two tree squirrels(they found them under the tree),a peach-faced lovebird and of course a lot of cats and a dog (my mom lived on a farm).

My story:
When I was about 1 year old,we already had an eastern rosella(which we later gave away, she made that weird sound like someone is breaking glasses and my mom gone crazy from it). After that we had a budgerigar, two actually, but sadly they both died.So my parents decided to buy something else. They gave all money that they had to bought our first african grey parrot. We called him Harry,at that time Harry was already more than 5 years old and he was amazing. When my mom talked to me,he learned every word of it.2 years later he died because of the food poisoning. There were no vets for parrots at that time so we couldn`t help him.

So if you wonder from where did my passion for animals came, well now you know.
And this was just the beginning....

Luke,Alexandrine Parakeet

He ran away on 29.10.2006

Luke, was my first parrot,I bought him with my savings. He was something special, not because he was a parrot but because he was a family member. When we were eating,he was eating. When I was showering,he was showering with me. He didn`t talk at that time because he was too young...but you know when people say that actions tell you more then words.Well that`s how I felt when I had him. A lot of people don`t know much about parrots in general...all they know that there are birds. So I`m going to give you a short description about every parrot I had.

Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria eupatria):
Description:
Hen without black cheek-stripe and pink band to nape; plumage generally slightly duller; middle tail-feathers on average shorter.
Immatures as hen, adult plumage develops at 18 months, completed by 32 to 36 months.

Ricky & Lily,African Greys

We bought Ricky when we still had Luke.He is completely wild parrot from Africa. He made a long trip and I`m glad he survived it.He travelled from Africa to Netherland and from Netherland to our country Slovenia. We didn`t order him or anything;we found a so called ¨breeder¨.He lied to us from the moment we met him,but thank God we saved Ricky. He was really sick when we got him and an excellent vet saved his life.

Lily joined our family a year after we brought home Ricky. We bought her from breeding center in Italy and she is also wild. They already had 5 baby greys. All 5 baby greys me and my dad were handfeeding. We kept only one of them, named Pancho.

Congo African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus)

Sasha,Ring-necked Parakeet

I`ve got Sasha a month after Luke ran away. He was smaller than Luke. I`ve taught him to talk.He knew more then 100 word (he said words like:peanut, his name, peek a boo,ouch,etc.). He wasn`t handfed,he was wild but he sat on my shoulder or knees, never on my hand.He was afraid of bare skin and you weren`t allow to pet him cause he would bit you.He was killed by a female same species that he was.

African Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri krameri)

Chopy,Rose-breasted Cockatoo

Chopy, was bought 3-4 years ago. He is a real clown in our house. But unfortunately he started to pluck his feathers, because I`m sometimes gone for a week or more.He also talk more than 50 words. He is more of a dance type a bird and really unpredictable. He really likes dancing no matter what music is on.

Rose-breasted Cockatoo (Cacatua roseicapilla)

Lovebirds

*update*decided that lovebirds should be mentioned too!

We had like 12 lovebirds in an aviary. It was really a great pleasure watching them together.Lovebirds are really playful and can be gentle too.But when it comes to territory, they would kill each other if necessary. This birds are so beautiful, specially when taking care of each other and bathing, playing on swings.I was really sad when we had to gave them away, but it was the best thing for them because me and my dad couldn`t watch them fighting. I don`t have pictures of them together,unfortunately....but I do have a pictures of a Masked Lovebirds when they were just babies and were growing up in our home.

Masked Love Bird (Agapornis personata)

Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri)

Size - Weight:The Fischer's Lovebird is a bit smaller than the other lovebird species, only getting up to about 5 3/4"(14.5 cm) in length.
Distribution:The Fischer's Lovebird is native to eastern Africa north of Tanzania and south and southeast of Lake Victoria.

My biggest wish

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus,in english Hyacinth Macaw. This is my biggest wish. I would give everything so that I could have this parrot. Hyacinth Macaw is such an amazing parrot...my dad and me would buy her right away if it just wouldn`t be so expensive. The Hyacinth Macaw is an endangered species due to overcollection for the cage bird trade and habitat loss, sadly. I just can`t understand how can they catch this parrots and sell them, they are completely wild and the only one who would buy them are breeders. Such a magnificent parrot which is almost entirely blue with bright yellow along the sides of the lower part of the beak and also yellow circling its eyes. Did you know that Hyacinth Macaw is actually the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot in the world.

Description:
She is about 100cm long and 1.5-2kg in weight. The wingspan is 120-140 cm.
The Hyacinth Macaw survives today in three main populations in South America: In the Pantanal region of Brazil, and adjacent eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay, in the Cerrado region of the eastern interior of Brazil
