Hillary Clinton at a Glance

A brief biography

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is the junior United States Senator from New York, and a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 presidential election. She is married to Bill Clinton-the 42nd President of the United States-and was the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001.

A native of Illinois, Hillary Rodham attracted national attention in 1969 when she delivered a controversial address as the first student to speak at commencement exercises for Wellesley College. She began her career as a lawyer after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973, moving to Arkansas and marrying Bill Clinton in 1975, following her career as a Congressional legal counsel; she was named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979 and was listed as one of the one hundred most influential lawyers in America in 1988 and 1991. She was the First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992, was active in a number of organizations concerned with the welfare of children, and was on the board of Wal-Mart and several other corporate boards.

As First Lady of the United States, she took a prominent position in policy matters. Her major initiative, the Clinton health care plan, failed to gain approval by the U.S. Congress in 1994, but in 1997 she helped establish the State Children's Health Insurance Program and the Adoption and Safe Families Act. She became the only First Lady to be subpoenaed, testifying before a federal grand jury as a consequence of the Whitewater scandal in 1996. She was never charged with any wrongdoing in this or several other investigations during her husband's administration. The state of her marriage to Bill Clinton was the subject of considerable public discussion following the Lewinsky scandal in 1998.

Moving to New York, Clinton was elected to the United States Senate in 2000, the first time an American first lady ran for public office and the first female senator from that state. There she initially supported the George W. Bush administration on some foreign policy issues, which included voting for the Iraq War Resolution. She has subsequently opposed the administration on its conduct of the Iraq War and has opposed it on most domestic issues. She was re-elected by a wide margin in 2006. Long described as a polarizing figure in American politics, she is the first woman in U.S. history with a strong chance of being elected president. During 2007 she was consistently ranked as the front-runner in national polls for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. As the 2008 primaries take place, she is in a tight race with Senator Barack Obama.

Will the Decision Go Down to the Convention?

If neither candidate reaches the magic number of 2118 delegates, the decision will go to the DNC.

So, who said choosing the democrats' candidate for president would be easy? While the voters have been busy participating in primaries and caucuses, the choice may come down to a group of party leaders called superdelegates at the Democratic National Convention in August.

We'll provide the up-to-date delegate count here while, in the meantime, you can read articles such as this one to learn how the delegate and superdelegate system works.

Updated June 5, 2008.

Hillary Clinton 1926
Barack Obama 2158

Obama has surprassed the 2118 votes needed to secure the nomination. Hillary Clinton vows to support his candidacy.

See the estimated breakdown of pledged delegates and superdelegates here.

If you've noticed that the numbers change from time to time, even between primary and caucus events, it's because the delegate and, especially, the superdelegate process is complicated and dynamic. For a readable explanation, read Why Delegates Matter from CNNPolitics.com.

Good News / Bad News for Hillary Clinton

Is she up or is she down? Recent twists and turns, highs and lows along the campaign trail.

Stay tuned. We'll keep you posted with frequent updates. (The list is chronological with the most recent update at the bottom.)
GOOD NEWS: Clinton Holds Onto Lead Over Obama
March 20. The graph tells the story - it's close, but Hillary Clinton continues to hold onto her recent new lead in the Gallup poll of national Democratic voters' nomination preferences, 48% to 43%.
BAD NEWS: Richardson to Endorse Obama
March 21. Former candidate Governor Bill Richardson has decided to endorse Barack Obama. This is bad news for Clinton, who has generally been the choice of Hispanic voters during this primary cycle.
BAD NEWS: Michigan Probably Won't Have a Re-vote
As Hillary Clinton trails in the delegate count, it appears that Michigan will join Florida in the decision not to have a re-do of their presidential primary, meaning that neither states' delegates will be seated at the convention.
BAD NEWS: Hillary's trip to Bosnia
March 25. Hillary Clinton claims she "mis-spoke" about circumstances surrounding her trip to Bosnia as a first lady. Sniper fire? Running for cover? Hmm. That's not what the CBS News video shows.
GOOD NEWS: Clinton leads polls in Pennsylvania
March 25. According to a report of recent polling information regarding the upcoming April 22 Pennsylvania Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton holds an advantage over Obama ranging from 16 to 26 points.
GOOD NEWS: Hillary Clinton vows to stay in the race.
March 29. Hillary Clinton today vowed to stay in the race throughout the remaining primaries and throughout the summer despite DNC Chairman Howard Dean's call for the candidates to settle the race by the beginning of July. "We cannot go forward until Florida and Michigan are taken care of, otherwise the eventual nominee will not have the legitimacy that I think will haunt us." Looks as if the decision may actually go to the convention.
GOOD NEWS (Mostly): Clinton Campaign Raises $20 Million in March
April 2. That's good news, but the Obama campaign continues to raise even more money and actually raised $40 million in March despite the Jeremiah Wright issue peaking during that time frame.
BAD NEWS: Latest Gallup poll shows Clinton 44%, Obama 49%
April 5. Democratic voters nationwide prefer Obama over Hillary. When polled about the general election, registered voters chose McCain over Clinton 47% to 45%.
GOOD NEWS: Obama's Bitter Comments give Hillary Hope
April 13. "A political tempest over Barack Obama's comments about bitter voters in small towns has given rival Hillary Clinton a new opening to court working-class Democrats 10 days before Pennsylvania's primary. "
GOOD NEWS: Hillary's Lead in Pa. is Growing
April 18. Current Newsmax/Zogby poll results show Hillary Clinton leading at 47% versus Barack Obama's 42%. Her lead has become greater each of the last few days. From the article linked above: "Undecideds are down to 8% and they have slowly begun to break for Clinton. Obama slipped in the one-day sample to only 40%."
GOOD NEWS: Clinton's Pennsylvania victory leads to record fundraising.
April 25. Nearly $10 million raised in the 24 hours following the Pennsylvania win.
GOOD NEWS: North Carolina's Governor to Endorse Hillary Clinton
April 28. Barack Obama continues to hold a substantial lead in the polls and is favored to win North Carolina's primary next week, but in the meantime the governor will endorse Hillary.
BAD NEWS: Influential superdelegate switches support from Clinton to Obama.
May 1. Former democratic party chairman Joe Andrew, who was appointed to that position by President Bill Clinton, today switched his support from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama. Andrew, who originally endorsed Hillary Clinton back in November, made his move in an effort to end the prolonged race between Clinton and Obama prior to the convention so that the party might unite in its race to beat John McCain.
GOOD NEWS: Clinton Leads Obama in Nationwide Poll
May 5. In a USA Today/Gallup poll of democratic and democratic-leaning independent voters, Hillary Clinton is the leader by 7 percent over Barack Obama. Two weeks ago, Obama led Clinton in a similar poll by 10 percent.
BAD NEWS: More Superdelegates Choosing Obama
May 9. Although Barack Obama has led in delegate count for some time, Hillary Clinton has held the lead on superdelegates - until now. At one point today it was reported that Obama had taken the lead. As of evening, Hillary is ahead but the numbers change practically minute by minute. As superdelegates throw their support to Obama, those new numbers may soon force Clinton out of the race. Will Hillary concede prior to the Convention? Stay tuned.
GOOD NEWS: Hillary "more determined than ever" to stay in the race
May 13. Following tonight's West Virginia win and with only three weeks remaining, Hillary Clinton has no intention of giving up.
BAD NEWS: John Edwards endorses Barack Obama
May 14. In an attempt to bring unity to the Democratic party, former presidential candidate John Edwards has now endorsed Barack Obama.
GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS: Primary Results
May 21, 2008.
GOOD NEWS: Hillary Clinton wins in Kentucky (37 more pledged delegates).
BAD NEWS: Barack Obama wins in Oregon (31 more pledged delegates, but he still leads).
BAD NEWS? Disputed Michigan and Florida delegates may be divided between Clinton and Obama.
May 29, 2008. A legal analysis of the Democrat party's obligation to punish Michigan and Florida's delegates for breaking party rules may result in their seated delegate count to be cut in half. A meeting this weekend of the party's rules committee could settle the situation. Hillary's supporters vow to demonstrate during the meeting set for Saturday at a Washington hotel.
BAD NEWS: DNC splits vote of Michigan and Florida Delegates
June 1, 2008. With boos and hisses in the background, the Democratic Party has decided to seat the delegates from Michigan and Florida (who had been punished for moving up their primary dates), virtually guaranteeing Obama the candidacy.

Florida delegates were divided based on ballots cast in their primary, while Michigan undecideds were awarded to Barack Obama, whose name did not appear on the Michigan ballot.

Expect undeclared Superdelegates to finally choose their candidate. Expect Obama to clinch the nomination by mid week, barring legal challenges by the Clinton camp.
SAD NEWS: Obama is the candidate
June 5, 2008. Hillary Clinton vows to support Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton on Health Care

February 3, 2008: Will President Clinton Garnish Your Wages to Pay for Universal Health Care?

"Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., this morning left open the possibility that, if elected, her government would garnish the wages of people who didn't comply with her health care plan. "We will have an enforcement mechanism, whether it's that or it's some other mechanism through the tax system or automatic enrollments," Clinton said in an appearance on 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos'.

"Clinton went on to say, though, that such mechanisms would not include penalties. 'They don't have to pay fines %u2026 We want them to have insurance. We want it to be affordable. And what I have said is that there are a number of ways of doing that. Now, there's not just one way of getting to that.'"

Obama versus Clinton - Not Hillary, but Bill

January 21, 2008

Obama Calls Bill Clinton Untruthful
By LARRY MARGASAK

WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama challenged Bill Clinton's truthfulness Monday in a deepening feud with the husband of Obama's Democratic presidential rival.

Obama's rebuke of the former president, who is still extremely popular with Democrats, came on the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., when both Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton focused on the civil rights leader.

In an interview on ABC, Obama twice questioned Bill Clinton's veracity.

"I have to say just broadly, you know, the former president, who I think all of us have a lot of regard for, has taken his advocacy on behalf of his wife to a level that I think is pretty troubling. You know, he continues to make statements that aren't supported by the facts, whether it's about my record of opposition to the war in Iraq, or our approach to organizing in Las Vegas.

"You know, this has become a habit. And one of the things that I think we're going to have to do is to directly confront Bill Clinton when he's not making statements that are factually accurate."

The former president recently has accused Obama of exaggerating his anti-war record and handing out undeserved praise to Republicans. Clinton said he personally witnessed Obama's union forces intimidating Nevada caucus voters and said an Obama radio ad suggested how Democrats could keep votes from his wife.

Bill Clinton on the Campaign Trail with Hillary - Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Former President Bill Clinton is speaking up for his wife. Is he saying too much?

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton's primary rival, has "challenged Bill Clinton's truthfulness" in comments the former president made about Obama and his campaign. This isn't the first time Bill's made the headlines in bigger print than his wife, the candidate. So, should Bill be campaigning with Hillary? What do you think? (Hear Hillary defend her husband's actions on Face the Nation, January 27, 2008)

Should Bill Clinton be campaigning with and for his wife?

Good idea. Bill can help her get votes, so he should campaign with Hillary.

mukunda22 says:

Bill loves Hillary--That much is obvious.

People love Bill and love it when he stops by the rural areas of this beautiful counry.

He does a great job campaigning for Hillary.

Maria says:

Why shouldn't he? Why are we even asking this question? Wives campaign for husbands when they run. The only reason this is even a question is because she is a woman. He was a popular president and it makes sense for him to help in the cause.

LittleLambs says:

yes, he's her husband and he should support her.

PaulaFarris says:

Yes. Anything that will hinder her chances of becoming our next president is a good thing. (This comment doesn't exactly fit in either category though. :-)

asmoul89 says:

Yes--I don't see a problem with it. He needs to settle down, though. He tries too hard to protect Hillary. Hillary is strong--she'll fight through anything!

Bad idea. Bill's past and his mouth are going to do more harm than good for Hillary.

Spook says:

Unfortunatly with my background I'm not a democrat supporter.I do feel however that as her husband he of course must support her. Moreover it's her running,so he should keep his mouth shut as everytime he opens it some controversy unfolds. She probably was the President when he was in office anyway.
In my opinion she should run with Obama,as by doing so they hold the party together and more importantly they keep all the personal preference vote so their candancy is stronger.Otherwise her supporters might shift to McCann

kcpapa2 says:

She Can't win, Obama got so far ahead to fast. To bad because she would have had a chance at beating MCcain, Obama will be obliterated. Don't think she wants the VP job, she would be terrible at it. She's to hard headed and Bill would be in the way.

CentennialLightBulb says:

I think it is really game over for both of them, now Edwards has backed Obama.

karinmarie says:

YES!

TheRealDiel says:

Nope and Oprah, if she new the truth, shouldn't and wouldn't be campaigning for Obamma. And no one should be campaigning for McCain at all. He is insane, a proven liar and a war mongar. And they are all members of the CFR!!! On the other hand, Ron Paul is an honest, constitutional man only concerned with US and the truth, and he is the only one that is NOT a member of the CFR...Figure it out people!

Hillary: Hands On the Bureaucracy

Obama: It's the Vision that Counts

January 16, 2008
Clinton vs Obama: Management Style
by Aaron Bruns

Last night's Democratic debate in Las Vegas kicked off a new dispute over which top candidate has the right approach to actually running the vast bureaucracy that is the executive branch.

Prompting the exchange: Senator Obama's admission that "I'm not an operating officer. Some in this debate around experience seem to think the job of the president is to go in and run some bureaucracy. Well, that's not my job. My job is to set a vision of 'here's where the bureaucracy needs to go.'"

Last night, Hillary shot back "I do think that being president is the chief executive officer. I respect what Barack said about setting the vision, setting the tone, bringing people together. But I think you have to be able to manage and run the bureaucracy."

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Who is She?

by Erin McClam, AP National Writer

Friday, October 19, 2007

NEW YORK - Hillary Rodham Clinton likes to say she was born in the middle of the country at the middle of the century, in a Chicago suburb that defined a childhood out of "Father Knows Best" or "Ozzie and Harriet."

Years later, a group of her old teachers and classmates got together with her to reminisce, with a historian to moderate. During the round of introductions, Clinton's second-grade teacher turned to her and deadpanned: "And who are you?"

"Oh yes," said the first lady of the United States. "This is the question we're all trying to answer."

Clinton has charted a decade and a half now on the national stage. She is by far the most familiar to us of the nearly 20 people running for president. And yet she remains somehow paradoxical, impenetrable, unknowable.

Her life has been marked by polar forces: She is the daughter of a left-leaning mother and an archconservative father. She campaigned for Barry Goldwater, and then for Eugene McCarthy. She married a force of nature, then struggled to define her own image.

She has wrestled with a somewhat stilted public speaking voice, a scripted style, belied by what friends say is a whimsical affinity for costume jewelry at the holidays and a signature laugh she lets loose occasionally - boisterous and infectious.

She has an unquestioned intellect but, as former aide Melanne Verveer says, an "absolute tin ear for foreign languages" rivaled only by her flat singing voice infamously pilloried on YouTube.

There always has been a holographic quality to Hillary Clinton: Looked at from one angle, she can be the tough trailblazer, weatherer of a thousand storms. From another, she can be the personification of icy, calculating ambition.

But what about that teacher's basic question? Who is she?

There are clues at each stage of her singular American story.

(Read the rest of the story.)
