V for Vendetta is a 2006 action-thriller film set in London, England, United Kingdom in a near-future dystopian society. The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

V for Vendetta

V costume mask, hat, wig, belt and daggers

V's mask and costume draw from the historical British figure of Guy Fawkes, known best for being caught allegedly trying to blow up the British Parliament building in 1605. That event (the "Gunpowder Plot") is marked to this day by an annual celebration on November 5th. Fawkes' likeness and garb of the time both are stylized to form V's visual persona.

He's adapted this look to not only make himself more of a symbol, but to cover up the injuries and damage that resulted from his stay at Larkhill Detention Camp, where he was subjected to biological experiments. In the V FOR VENDETTA graphic novel, it's implied that V may have even lost his eyes and eyesight in the explosions and fire that destroyed the camp and allowed him to escape.
