V is a fictional character from the comic book series V for Vendetta, created by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. He is a mysterious anarchist vigilante and freedom fighter, easily recognizable by his Guy Fawkes mask and dark clothing. According to Moore, he was designed to be both a protagonist and antagonist, so that readers could decide for themselves whether he was a hero fighting for a cause, or simply insane.

Originally a series of comics by famed author Alan Moore, the V FOR VENDETTA series is available as a bound collection. The story was adapted into a movie by the Wachowskis (Matrix) and starred Hugo Weaving as "V" and Natalie Portman as "Evey."

V's mask and costume draw from the historical British figure of Guy Fawkes, known best for being caught allegedly trying to blow up the British Parliament building in 1605. That event (the "Gunpowder Plot") is marked to this day by an annual celebration on November 5th. Fawkes' likeness and garb of the time both are stylized to form V's visual persona.
He's adapted this look to not only make himself more of a symbol, but to cover up the injuries and damage that resulted from his stay at Larkhill Detention Camp, where he was subjected to biological experiments. In the V FOR VENDETTA graphic novel, it's implied that V may have even lost his eyes and eyesight in the explosions and fire that destroyed the camp and allowed him to escape.
