How to Contact Sally Potter

In 2004, when blogging was not yet daily news, Sally Potter committed to writing a blog about touring with her new film, YES, starring Joan Allen and Simon Abkarian. Along with her blog, she created a bulletin board that has attracted over 30,000 readers and is still active.

When In Disgrace With Fortune and Men's Eyes

... make like Orlando and get to a library! This is a list of scholarly articles that you can read online, for free, about Sally's work. For books by Sally and about her, see the Amazon module below.
Senses of Cinema: Great Directors
A detailed, beautifully-written overview from this excellent Australian journal. It covers Sally's work from Thriller to Yes and includes a lengthy bibliography. McKim argues passionately for Potter's cinematic approach of "loving detachment."
BFI: Contemporary Auteurs
A long interview designed for media studies students that reveals a lot of information about Sally's approach to directing, her views on the changing gender politics of cinema, and what it means to be an "auteur."
Camera Obscura on Thriller
Cheers to Brown University for putting these early issues of Camera Obscura, the first journal about feminist film, online. In this issue, available to download as a pdf, you can also read Sally's notes on Thriller, just a page before the article by filmmaker Jane Weinstock, who presents a personal response to the film's utopian potential.
Film Quarterly: David Ehrenstein interview
Ehrenstein is a long-time fan of Potter's, and this interview helps but her dazzling (re)emergence with the success of Orlando in the context of her earlier work as a performance artist and filmmaker. They tackle knotty issues such as Potter's relationship with Virginia Woolf's novel, and identity politics.
Cineaste: Cynthia Lucie interview
A serious and enjoyable conversation about Yes, considering the film's aesthetics, politics, performance and impact.
Artforum: Gary Indiana
Incisive interview about Orlando with a great film writer.

Sally's work inspired a whole generation of feminist film theorists, and her work continues to generate articles, chapters and books. Here's a few of the best.

Chick Flicks : Theories and Memories of the Feminist Film Movement

B. Ruby Rich, grrrl cinema warrior, made friends with Sally when she was a squatting activist and performance artist - and her review of Thriller in the Chicago Reader introduced American audiences to the film. This is a wonderful, unconventional history that proceeds by anecdote: meet Sally Potter and her filmmaking circle (including Julie Christie) on their own terms.

Amazon Price: $22.45 (as of 10/06/2008)

A Theory of Adaptation

Published in 2006, this book demonstrates Orlando's continuing relevance and excitement.

Feminism and Film

There's a whole chapter on Orlando> here - and it's a fascinating read.

A Fine Romance Pb (Culture And The Moving Image)

Patricia Mellencamp met Sally when she came to the US to tour Thriller and has been an ardent supporter of her films since. This book includes sections on Thriller, The Gold Diggers and Orlando as major milestones in cinematic history.
