Or did you know she wasn't the only one who played Batgirl on the big screen?? Keep reading and you'lll find out. In 1956, Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff decided Batman and Robin both needed female counterparts in order to stave off the gay rumors about these characters and voila Batwoman appeared, aka Kathy Kane (issue #233 in Detective Comics) for Batman and then in 1961 Batgirl, aka Betty Kane (issue #139 in the Batman comics) appeared as a sidekick for Batwoman. When Julius Swartz took over as editor both of these Batwoman and Batgirl characters were taken out and were replaced in 1967 by the Barbara Gordon "Batgirl" (issue #359 in Detective Comics). But in this lens, we'll have a look at the wonderful actresses who have played "Batgirl" over the years in the television series, movies and the animation of all the versions of Batman.
From Comic Book Superheros to Batman in the Movies
Yvonne Craig b. May 16, 1937
the very first actress who played Batgirl

Yvonne Craig began her ballet training in 1954 in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo which lasted until 1957 from there she went on to acting. At first it was a way to pay the bills and pay for her dancing lessons. Her very first role was a short one in 1957 on Eighteen and Anxious and altho The Young Lad (with Patrick Wayne, John Wayne's son) was filmed in '57, it wouldn't make it to screen until 1959. In 1960, Yvonne married singer Jimmy Boyd but it only lasted a couple of years. During the early to mid 60's, Yvonne bounced between doing movies and television shows such as The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1960), Death Valley Days (1962) and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959 - 1962). Her big break came when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in 2 of his movies, It Happened at the World's Fair (1963) and Kissin Cousins (1964). Then starring with James Corborn in '67 in the movie In Like Flint. Then in 1967 the "powers that be" for Batman needed a female presences among them and Batgirl was made. Yvonne played Batgirl/Barbara Gordon during the last year it was on the air. After her run as Batgirl in '68, Yvonne Craig was pretty much stuck on television work after that. In 1968 she played in The Ghost and Mrs Muir and The Mod Squad then in '69 she put on her best green face and played in an episode of Star Trek. During the 70s Yvonne Craig can be seen in shows such as The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Starsky and Hutch, The Six Million Dollar Man, Emergency, Mannix and Kojak.
After that her acting career went down to basically nothing so she then turned to real estate. In 1988 she married Kenneth Aldrich and she still remains a classic cult siren from the 60s. She even has her own website.
Alicia Silverstone b. October 4, 1976
the actress who played Batgirl for the 1997 Batman and Robin
Before she became the 1997 Batgirl for George Clooney and Chris O'Donnel's Batman and Robin movie, Alicia Silverstone made her debut at the age of 6 doing modeling, some commercials (first one was for Domino's Pizza) and then after getting noticed in the movie The Crush which not only got her 2 MTV Awards (Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Villain)but she ended up being in a few of Aerosmith's music video which ended up getting her noticed by Amy Heckerling who cast her in the movie Clueless in '95, which she won 2 more MTV Awards (Best Female Performance, Best Comedic Performance both in '96). During 1995, Silverstone also starred in The Babysitter. In 1997, after starring as Batgirl in Batman and Robin, Silverstone got herself another award, this one was A Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress. After her role in Clueless, Alicia signed a contract with Columbia-TriStar as part of that contract she received a three-year first-look deal for her own production company, First Kiss Productions and the first movie that her company put out was Excess Baggage which didn't rank much higher then Batman and Robin.
In the early 2000 Alicia did a couple of movies, Scorched and Love's Labour's Lost in addition to doing the voice of Sharon Spitz in Braceface but then she left the limelight for awhile. When she resurfaced it was to Miss Match, a television show which didn't last very long at all. From 2004 - 2005 Alicia played in Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah and in Scooby Doo with Sarah Michelle Geller and Freddy Prinze Jr. In 2005 also saw her marriage to Christopher Jarecki (lead singer of group S.T.U.N.), after dating for the past 8 year. Being vegetarian, Alicia has also written a diet book recently combining what we put in our bodies and what we're doing to the planet, and how choosing the right foods in the kitchen can help you feeling lighter, sexier, and more alive.
