Who's Hugh MacLeod?
At his gapingvoid blog, Hugh has this to say about himself:
Besides publishing the cartoons, my main gig is as a marketing and blogging consultant for Stormhoek, a small South African vineyard, whose "hacker" approach to wine making is currently getting a lot of attention in the wine trade.
I also do the marketing for a bespoke Savile Row tailoring firm, English Cut with Thomas Mahon, arguably one of the best half-dozen tailors in the world. I also have a small interest in an enterprise software company called Thingamy, whose chief architect is Sigurd Rinde.
Stormhoek, Thingamy, and English Cut have all to do with what I call "The Global Microbrand", the area of business and marketing that interests me the most.
Recently I have also been working as a professional blog consultant for the film, Hallam Foe, directed by my old friend, Dave Mackenzie, of Young Adam fame.
Hugh recently moved to the USA from England, and is now living in Alpine, Texas.

He's also written a manifesto along the lines of "Cluetrain" (link below).
- The Hughpage
- This wiki is designed to give bloggers a place where they can centrally collate their links for whatever reason: Work, jobs, love, sex, networking, friendship, apartments, furniture, cars, arranging geek dinners etc etc. Go ahead and build, design, improve and contribute to it as you see fit, in whatever manner works best for you. I'll pay for the bandwidth. -Hugh MacLeod
It's a brilliant new place for bloggers and proponents of The Cluetrain Manifesto to meet, greet, exchange ideas, fall in love, find a flatmate, geek out, get social and get a job. - The Hughtrain
- "The market for something to believe in is infinite. We are here to find meaning. We are here to help other people do the same. Everything else is secondary.
We humans want to believe in our own species. And we want people, companies and products in our lives that make it easier to do so. That is human nature." - Cluetrain
- A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter-and getting smarter faster than most companies.

I have to say, after writing an under-five-hundred-word mini-manifesto, I find myself quite taken by the format. Somehow the brevity just clicks for me.
Why take 50,000 words [the length of your average business tome] to say what you have to say, when 500 will do? Brevity. I love brevity. We're both in a hurry.
Can I get gapingvoid cartoons on my site?

Have you read the mini-manifestos?
I have to say, after writing an under-five-hundred-word mini-manifesto, I find myself quite taken by the format. Somehow the brevity just clicks for me.
Why take 50,000 words, [the length of your average business tome] to say what you have to say, when 500 will do? Brevity. I love brevity. We're both in a hurry.
So I'm thinking, well, there's also a lot of people out there besides myself and the bloggers I read, with ideas needing spread. Powerful ideas that could be easily summed up in 500 words or less. And I would really, truly, seriously like to do what I can to help get them out there.
So here's the deal. If you've written a manifesto in 500 words or less, and you want help spreading the word, just e-mail it to me, or send me the link. If it's any good I'll either link to it, or post it here on gapingvoid [under the same Creative Commons terms with which I publish my own work].
It doesn't necessarily have to be about a topic I'm professionally close to. Nor does it have to be the greatest piece of writing since Cluetrain or Purple Cow. Just make sure it's written with authority and passion. Just make sure it's good.
One stipulation I will add: I'm interested in changing the world [however you wish to interpret that statement]. And I believe gapingvoid readers tend to be interested in writers who feel the same. That's the quality we'll collectively be looking for, so please keep that in mind.
Thanks. Let's see what happens...

I must have read and heard a hundred times that viral marketing is an inexpensive way to get a message across. Nice idea. But it's not true....
Look at the intensely clever marketing for Stormhoek Wine, which began by sending the wine to bloggers for their review, and now involves 100 Geek Dinners -- offline -- where people can get together to try the wine, and point of purchase, and clever labeling using the brilliant Hugh Macleod's edgy cartoons, you still see the combination of online and offline, traditional and new. - Sifry's Alerts

What is Blue Monster?
The Blue Monster was designed as a conversation starter. To paraphrase the ongoing dialogue between Steve and I:For too long, Microsoft has allowed other people- the media, the competition and their detractors, especially- to tell their story on their behalf, instead of doing a better job of it themselves.
We firmly believe that Microsoft must start articulating their story better- what they do, why they do it, and why it matters- if they're to remain happy and prosperous long-term.
If they can do this, well, we don't expect people in their millions to magically start loving Microsoft overnight, but perhaps it might get people- including the people who work there- to start thinking differently. Small moves.
[Afterthought:] Granted, none of this is rocket science. But maybe that's Microsoft's main problem.
[Disclosure: gapingvoid is more evil than Microsoft. Just so you know.]
