Who Watches the Watchmen?

Alan Moore surprised readers and comic fans alike when he released "The Watchmen" in 1986. This graphic novel departed from the usual fanboy traditions, instead creating a multilayered universe complete with complex and realistic characters.

Zack Snyder hopes to recreate the experience through his film, "The Watchmen."

The Graphic Novel Hits the Screen on March 6th, 2009.

Alan Moore's 1986 magnum opus effectively lifted the comic book genre to literary status. Different directors and producers have played with the idea of developing the book into a film but all attempts have failed until recently. Zack Snyder (who helmed the 2007 hit "The 300") directs a mainly unknown cast the 2009 adaptation.

Watchmen Timeline

  • September 1986: The first issue of the 12-part series was published.
  • September 5, 1988: The Watchmen receives a Hugo Award (Science fiction's most prestigious award).
  • October 26, 2005: Time Magazine includes "The Watchmen" in its list of best 100 novels since 1923.
  • Early July 2008: I experience a sinking feeling in my gut when I hear that Zack Snyder is directing the "Watchmen" motion picture. As enjoyable as "The 300" was shlocky fun, but it lacked depth and subtlety that is necessary to make "Watchmen" a great film.
  • July 18, 2008: The Watchmen trailer is show before "The Dark Knight." Viewers experience chills seeing their favorite images and characters come to life to the tune of a haunting Smashing Pumpkins song (The Beginning is the End is the Beginning). I've personally seen this teaser trailer over 10 times in 3 days.
