Why Should We Help The Homeless?

Ranked #2,355 in Culture & Society, #51,366 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, A Day of Hope, FIV Cat Rescue

That's An Easy One...

When it comes to helping the homeless in America, the issue really boils down to one simple question....

WHAT IF IT HAPPENED TO YOU?

Developing a viable solution to homelessness becomes very, very simple when it's framed in the proper perspective. Do you know what types of services are available for the homeless in your neighborhood? Who is the first person you would call if you received the news that your home had just been taken away from you? Where would you spend your first night on the streets of your hometown?

How would you cope with the explosion of emotion that will undeniably rock your world? The solution is simple when you think of homelessness from a personal perspective. The problem is that our society as a whole, doesn't. Take it personally, that is.

Until now...

The news is filled with stories of people who are losing their jobs, their homes and their hopes for their future. Weeping fathers cradle their hands in their heads as they watch the local sheriff remove their belongings from a suddenly foreclosed on home. The injury is compounded further by the fact that your life's sudden disaster is being broadcast repeatedly on the evening news.

Homelessness in America is suddenly becoming very, very personal... to a LOT of people!

Why Should We Help The Homeless?

Homelessness Is A Very Lonely Journey

What If It Happened To YOU?

ConnieHomelessness is a dark and treacherous highway that should never be traveled alone. But, unfortunately... our blessed America is filled with thousands of people who are doing just that. There is no way to calculate the true cost of this burgeoning atrocity in our country, because the highest cost is in the human suffering.

It's impossible to calculate the impact of the despair that is fueled by shattered dreams and lost hope. Battered emotions require a lengthy healing process, and the cost continues to increase with ever rising health care costs and delayed treatment for those who find themselves facing the dark reality of homelessness in America.

What if the unthinkable happened in your life? Wouldn't you want to be able to pick up the phone and know who to call for the help you would need? Wouldn't you be thankful to be able to login to a website that provided you with the name and number of a person who could actually help you?

Yes, there are many people who are working on the issue of helping the homeless, but do you know who they are and where to find them? If not, why not? Effective communication is a huge missing piece when it comes to helping the homeless in our country. Our infrastructure is sorely lacking, and I think it's high time we update our antiquated system of meeting the needs of the poor and broken-hearted!

Becoming a Squidoo lensmaster has provided me with the opportunity to share my thoughts about helping the homeless. Building lenses helps me further develop my dreams, hopes and plans... and the frustrations of trying to implement them!

Why Do I Care About Helping The Homeless?

The Issue Of Homelessness Is Very Personal At My House

type=textThe need for a hand up was a dark reality at my house for a long, long time. I was raised by a single mom, so lack of financial resources was the foundation of my formative years.

My mindset about poverty was deep rooted, and it has taken a long time for me to come to grips with the lack of self-worth that became the hallmark of my thoughts about my personal identity, self-esteem and my comprehension of basic rights to life.

The fact that I ended up living on the streets of America was based in the fact that I was homeless in spirit... my life circumstances were simply a reflection of my impoverished state of mind.

Clara is made from a pair of sweatpants I was given while living in a homeless shelter a few years ago. Her name is short for Clarity, due to the impact she has had in helping me change my "stinking thinking!"

I Became Homeless In America...

Land of the free, and home of the broken-hearted.

Much Of The Homelessness In America Is Rooted In Emotional Turmoil

I Stood Under The Stars & Cried Out To God, "What Do You Want From Me?"

I Was In Desperate Emotional Pain, & I Wasn't Even Homeless Yet!

I remember clearly the night that I prayed about helping the homeless. There was a presentation about the homeless at a session of my church's annual state convention. It touched my heart deeply, and I remember the prayer I prayed that night.

I was pondering the presentation, and felt a heaviness of heart for those who had no place to call home. As I prepared for sleep, I simply whispered...
"Lord, I want to help the homeless, but I don't know how."

My own life was filled with turmoil, and I needed answers for life issues that were bigger than I was... I didn't know it at the time, but my prayer for others was also a prayer for myself!

Little did I realize that I was dangling on the precipice of homelessness for myself. I had no idea the turn that my life was about to take... and I assure you, I'm glad now to know that I didn't know where I was headed.

Things went from bad to worse, and just kept on going!

Answers To Prayer

are sometimes waiting for you at the other end of a very rocky road...

Wounds To The Spirit Are As Detrimental To Your Health As Physical Wounds

Untreated Wounds To The Spirit Can Be Deadly

The broken heart of my childhood remained dormant and festering for many, many years. You probably know people in your own life who are plagued with symptoms that don't seem to make sense in the course of their everyday life. Overly emotional, workaholics, control freaks, and rapid mood swings are just a few of the symptoms of a life that is plagued by hidden wounds to the soul. The inability to focus and poor follow through are further complications of the mind that is wreaking havoc on itself! I was a mess, but didn't know why. No one seemed to know how to help me... and I certainly didn't know how to help myself!

That's what's so cool about building this lens...
I have found healing while writing about my memories of some of the worst times of my life! I have an occasional flare-up of volatile emotion, but the pain is [mostly] gone, and I can see the situation from an objective standpoint. I recognize my own history in many of the faces and voices of the homeless in my neighborhood. It's bittersweet to see the brand new me that has emerged from my personal experience with the dark reality of homelessness!

While it's heartbreaking to see so many people suffering with many of the same dark pains that nearly destroyed my own life, it's exciting to be able to tell them...
"Yes, I really DO believe there IS hope for your future too!'

The Ultimate Reward Of My Suffering...

No Pain,
No Shame,
No Blame

My Journey Through Homelessness Was The Greatest Gift I've Ever Received

Oh, It Was Painful & Horrendous, But It Was Productive!

The exciting news is, that just like childbirth, the pain does finally come to an end and there's a brand new life on the other side of it!

The Psalmist says it like this:
"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.
I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me." Psalm 119:71-75

Part of my new identity and outlook on life was birthed through my participation as a lensmaster at Squidoo. Writing about the things that are important to me has shown me what REALLY IS IMPORTANT TO ME!

The process of participating, or not being able to participate in various projects at Squidoo has shown me the true state of my life, my abilities, the state of my health and most importantly... the state of my "self." Healing arts have been a major part of my recovery process, and I have learned to take great pleasure in artsy self-expression. Clara was created during one of those artsy moments when I just had to "make something!"

Being known throughout my childhood as a great big chicken was insulting at best, but now, she's one of the favorite aspects of my identity. The mental and spiritual clarity I needed came through the realization that it was my own thoughts that caused me to feel like a great big chicken... now, I'm happy to tell you that I am no longer afraid to speak up, speak out, and engage in my dreams to help those who help the homeless.

Thank-You, Squidoo!

Clara Is Made From Some Pretty Unusual Fabric

She's Made From A Pair Of Sweatpants I Was Given While Living In A Homeless Shelter, & Her Name Is Short For Clarity

Clara was born from the combination of my love for crafting, my introduction to healing art therapies, and she has become the mascot for all of my artistic endeavors.

My homelessness happened because I became very ill, and was unable to maintain employment. It was a horrifying reality, because I was a single mom, and my health was also complicated by deep psychiatric issues. My diagnoses were numerous, and were compounded by chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, physical injuries, surgeries, and an inadequate emotional support system.

Does that sound graphic to you, and seem like too much information? Many people think so, but that's part of the reason that families in distress aren't getting the help they need in a timely fashion. Fear and stigma cause people to fail to ask for help until their lives bypass a state of disrepair and moves into the harsher realities of famly breakdown, financial collapse and emotional devastation.

Even darker realities of alcoholism, drug addiction and crime follow close on the heels of wounded souls who are isolated from emotional security, financial provision and the familial connections that help ward off these harsh life scenarios.

In 1987, I read a scripture that exploded in my heart like the 4th of July.... it was the promise of God's good plan for my life, and that I had a really bright future to look forward to. I clung to that promise for many years, and it kept me going during some of my darkest days. I was in the midst of some difficult life circumstances, so even though it was encouraging, the promise of good things seemed too much to hope for.

It goes like this...
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans for hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

The Psalmist tells us that hope deferred makes the heart sick, and though this promise seemed to be intended just for me, I had already experienced enough deferred hope to make it difficult to really believe in a promise of hope for good things for ME!
Still...that seed of hope had been planted, and so, I hoped.

I've Been Equipped To Speak My Peace

No, That Is NOT A Typo

EggheadPeace of mind is a state of mind that is founded in one's own thinking lines. The way I think about everything has changed, and that is the miracle that I so desperately needed.

I can sit here today and talk to you about things that used to cause me explode in waves of pain, shame and blame. Those days are behind me now, and you may not know it yet; but that's great news for the homeless in America...

It DID happen to me, and now that I've worked my way through my own nightmare, I'm on a mission to become a part of the piece that was missing during my own experience!

I now see the issue of homelessness from a brand new perspective. I've been equipped to speak up, speak out and take action that helps bring change for the good. I've been in that process for myself for a number of years, but the tables have turned and it's now my great honor to begin to speak up for others who are enduring that same dark hardship.

The difference is, I have now found my voice and I believe that it's important for me to use it... even during the times that it feels very, very shaky!

To Accomplish Your Goals, It's Important To Plan...

Plan Your Work, and Work Your Plan

If you've followed God's Grace Notes for very long, you probably know that I'm having a hard time sitting still right now... That's because I'm extremely excited about the fact that I have finally discovered the good plan that God spoke of in that verse! I've been writing my storm out for a long time, and it's incredibly rewarding to be securely anchored in this peaceful mental harbor.

It took a long time for me to find it, and I doubt I could ever have devised a plan as good as my life is fast becoming! The events of my life have convinced me of the depth of God's grace, and his great love for people. What seemed like the road to destruction has actually become the building blocks for the restoration of my shattered heart, injured spirit and sad life circumstances.

Now, how's THAT for a really good plan?

The Question Now Is...

What does this have to do with you, and where do we go from here?

The Solution To Homelessness...

is most effective when it begins with swift intervention and a really good plan.

So,The Question We Need To Answer...

Where to go and what to do if you find yourself suddenly homeless?

The Citizens Of Phoenix, Arizona Are Waging War On Homelessness

The City Of Phoenix Is A Community That Is Working To Become A National Role Model For Ending Homelessness

Phoenix is filled with churches, agencies and individuals who are passionate about helping the homeless. Our homeless population is extremely large because our climate is conducive to survival during severe winter conditions in other areas of the country. Our city is filled with churches and agencies whose lives are focused on outreach to those who are coping with the dark reality of homelessness.

Phoenix is is overflowing with agencies and people whose goal is to establish our town as a role model for ending homelessness.

That's my personal passion, so my personal goal is to be counted as one of those individuals!

For Recovery From Homelessness

The best education is to learn from those who have mastered the learning curve!

So, How Do We Accomplish This Daunting Task?

The task of overcoming homelessness is accomplished one step at a time. When I joined Squidoo in October of 2006, I had no idea that I would become so enamored with social networking.

Neither did I realize that writing about my passion for crafting would ultimately lead me to writing about my experiences with crafting a new life for myself! I uncovered a brand new "me" as I followed in the footsteps of fellow lensmasters who provided inspiration and help with the how-to's of building lenses, blogs, websites, article marketing and search engine optimization.

But now, as time has marched on and I have grown... I am finding that I recognize the fact that when it comes to overcoming homelessness, many of those who are working diligently to help the homeless are floundering in as much as uncertainty about their activities as I was while I was trying to navigate the murky path of recovering from homelessness!

Churches, agencies, individuals, philanthropists and political leaders are doing their best to tame the massive beast of homelessness, but many of them have no experience with actually being homeless.

I have learned a lot about using the internet as the platform from which to share my expertise in any given area, and in the process I have come to recognize the fact that I am becoming one of the resident experts at overcoming homelessness!

I frequently find myself ranting and raving about the inadequacies of our social infrastructure because I am intimately acquainted with it's shortcomings.

The Search For A Viable Solution

The solution must be measurable, attainable and sustainable.

I Once Shared My Desire To Help The Homeless With A Shelter Director, She Told Me...

Start where you are and do what you can with what you've got.

Can One Person Really Make A Difference?

My life was changed by the step by step participation of every single person who played a part in my recovery...

My Thinking Lines Were In Desperate Need Of A Fresh Perspective

Working with a fully equipped team is critical to the success of any venture, but particulary in the instance of seeking to overcome homelessness!

My experience with homelessness has been a long and dark journey, but I have memories of many people who were just the person I needed when I had questions that were beyond the scope of my experience.

I now find myself wanting to stand up and speak out as I watch the news, and listen to the voices of those who seek to help the homeless. Perspective is key when it comes to providing viable, realistic solutions to tough issues. Just think about it for a minute... who do you call when you have a problem with your plumbing, your car won't start or you need help with funding for your child's college education?

You need an expert plumber, mechanic and financial advisor to provide you with the best possible solutions to the problems you are facing. And we all know that you're going to do some price comparisons before you make your final decision about the person that will be helping you solve those problems!

Homelessness is a critical issue that demands insight and input from someone who can troubleshoot the problem, then help provide a real solution for the dilemma. The problem is overwhelming if you think of trying to solve the entire problem alone, but wouldn't you like to know that you are doing something that is making a real difference in the life of someone who is seeking to overcome a life of living on the streets?

Wouldn't you like to know that there is a system in place to help you, should you ever find yourself facing the dark issue of homelessness?

What if you could make a difference in the life of just one homeless person? Would you be willing to do it?

How much are we willing to pay for not ending the homelessness that is plaguing our nation?

Shhh....

Silly Connie I know, I know... all the black box modules tell me that if I were speaking verbally, I would be shouting. But, I have found my voice and my life's purpose, so I find it difficult to maintain my decorum!

That being said, I'm not offering any apologies! The passion and zeal that accompany recovery are just two more of the many great reasons for taking the time and making the effort to help the homeless.

A life changed for the good is truly a miracle, and I would like to see more miracles like the one that is being accomplished in my little corner of the world. My journey to overcome homelessness is not yet fully complete, but I have made tremendous progress on my road to recovery. Squidoo has provided me with the opportunity to let my voice be heard...

Would you care to join me in my adventure to help those who help the ever increasing numbers of homeless in America?

This lens is part of my strategy...

to continue my quest to become part of the solution to American homelessness!

type=textI have written and re-written this lens, I have pondered and polished, tweaked and fine-tuned until I'm finally satisfied with the fact that I'm ready to cope with the potential repurcussions of this disclosure.

Am I really ready to engage in the steps that could come as a result of sharing my dreams with so many of you? What if someone contacted me, wanting to talk with them about my dream because they were willing to help? Indeed, what if... the possiblity is mind-boggling!

Yet, the personal impact of writing this story overwhelms me with gratitude for my own recovery, and desire to help the hurting people who don't have the ability to speak up for themselves. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to write from an objective, problem solving vantage point, and so I must say, "YES!"... I am ready to engage in strategies to help our nation overcome the issue of homelessness!

[Mostly] gone are the days of heart-rending grief and emotional turmoil that led to my own experience. I'm delighted to find myself rooted, established and equipped to address this issue from the other side of the table... I have to laugh out loud as the realization of God's good plan for my life is sinking deep into every fiber of my being.

How heaven must be celebrating their successful execution of the divine good plan for my life... I'm finally becoming a very healthy tree of righteousness, the planting of God's hand!

The other side of that coin is the memories I carry of so many other wounded souls who are still trapped in the dark reality of homelessness.

THAT is the reason for my driving passion to help the homeless in our country... are you aware of the mountain of distress signals that are bombarding heaven on a daily basis? In AMERICA?

I have a dream, so now my task is to gather the resources for building the communications structure I've been dreaming about for such a long time. It's time for me to muster the troops!

I Am A Seed Of Hope From The Loins Of God

Did you know? If you care about the homeless, then YOU are too!

Hope

Let The Healing Begin

Many peoples lives are now spiraling down to a place of financial insecurity that has long been the hallmark of those who are homeless, or live in conditions of poverty and lack of resources. I realize that in most cases, your financial distresses are a far cry from becoming homeless, but they ARE stressful enough to cause you to begin to consider the unthinkable.

Just think of how frightened you would be if you were suddenly thrust into a life on the streets! Imagine being alone, and too weak to even cry out for the help you would so desperately need.

Emergency preparedness is a critical issue, and I believe that if we do a better job of working together, we can overcome the ever encroaching disasters which accompany homelessness in America.

I believe that the vast numbers of those who help the homeless speaks to the fact that the healing we need is already well under way! But, we desperately need to more fully engage, equip and empower those who are on the front lines of the issue. Our city is filled with thousands of people whose lives are committed to the care and feeding of those whose lives have been overwhelmed by poverty.

They are unsung heroes, and I'll be sharing more about them as I continue to share my thoughts with you about why we should help the homeless.

Why Should We Help The Homeless?

Because it could happen to YOU, and you really don't want to have to face it alone.

Once We Stabilize America...

We'll be better equipped to help the rest of the world!

Why Should We Help The Homeless?

The homeless are people with problems, not a "worthy cause."

If You Are Formerly Homeless...

Don't be afraid to tell your story, there are people who need your dose of hope!

Me and my friends house them with us in our own homes. Over 200 have been helped over the last 6-8 years.

We do it not because we could be homeless but because Jesus has taught us to love. It is for Jesus, I wouldn't do it for any other reason.

We express our love to Him as we extend His love to them.

You gave reasons for poverty/homelessness and left off rebellion, sin (their and others to them), drugs, alcohol, and laziness to mention a few more... Oh, and their ignorance of the ways of God.

To help doesn't require a large organization just people who care. There are 99 Americans to help every homeless. My experience is most do not want the help they need most to rehabilitate. If only half really wanted to move forward in their lives, and in reality it is much less, there are 198 people to help the 1.

There are 220,000 churches in our country that means each church would need to help 8 homeless of course a big church of 20,000 would need to help 160 while a church of 100 would need to help 1.

The simple problem is very few care, neither inside the church nor outside. Let's go to work.
