Why Jesus Came

Ranked #5,936 in Culture & Society, #121,968 overall

Jesus Came To Serve, Not To Have Fun

If you were in a wonderful place, why would you leave it to go to a land where you were mostly unknown and unwanted? Your life there would be short, but full of trials and days of teaching. And worst of all, you would know your fate and that the end wouldn't be pretty.

This lens was written at Christmas time, but for all who are seekers and believers, you might enjoy my insight into why Jesus came. He certainly didn't come here to have fun. His life was anything but peaceful and joy filled, but he left us with messages of peace and joy.

Christ is the Christmas season...He came to save us from having no future and no hope. He spent his time here on earth traveling and spreading the Gospel, or the "Good News".

He didn't strive to have the nicest house on the block or the newest car. I am pretty sure that he'd be appalled at the way many of us celebrate his birth.

What was most important to him, should be most important to us. That is the definition of Christianity.

This season has become crazy with Xbox 360's and the latest Wii games flying off the shelves to be given to spoiled kids who already have more than they need. I am guilty of this myself.

I think we all know that "Jesus is the Reason for the season" but do we practice what we know? Do we take time out of our busy lives to figure out how to practice it?

Imagine he is sitting at the table as you write those cutesy Christmas cards that don't even contain his name, or walking the aisles of the grocery store as you stuff your cart with too much food for the Christmas dinner, while food pantries beg for canned items and people in your own town go hungry.

We have an obligation to know Jesus and find out what makes him happy. And that in turn will make us better people.

Even (and especially) if you don't believe in Jesus, please take the time to answer some of the polls on this lens. One of them asks, "Should the President be a Christian?" I would really appreciate your feedback.

The Message of the Cross

Inspirational Bible scriptures

Until about 10 years ago, I had no idea that the Bible actually came right out and said that it is foolish to not believe the message of the cross. So this became one of my favorite verses.

Please do not be foolish enough to brush aside the Bible as unimportant, made up stories.

If the Bible is full of falsehoods, why has it been around for so long and continue to be a best seller? Are you (as an unbeliever) just more intelligent than most people?

What convinced me early on that the Bible was truly from God, were the many prophecies foretold that came true many years later. How could those have been written by ordinary men?

Personally, if you dismiss the Bible without looking at it, reading it or studying it's meaning (get a study Bible), then I believe you are the worst kind of fool.

And please don't base your beliefs on what you know, or think you know about Christians. Not all people who call themselves Christians are alike. Many use the word without knowing anything about being a Christ follower.

I am a Christian, and I've known some so-called Christians, that I don't like very much or agree with totally. Everyone is human and no one is perfect. We have to have open minds, and decide for ourselves what we want to believe. Our belief has to be based on true information and not hindered by a perceived way of life.

The Cross postcard
Why is the Cross so important?

When I was young I wondered this:
Why would Jesus, who showed men so much power on earth by healing the sick and raising the dead, stay up there on the cross? Why didn't he come down and show them his power as they mocked him, yelling "He saved others, but he can't save himself" (Matthew 27:42).

Throughout the New Testament Jesus does miracle after miracle. Word of his work spreads and many hear of his amazing powers, yet even so, many doubted and did not believe. So why do another to save himself? It would not have lasted or proven anything really. And Jesus was born to do just this thing. He had always known it.

And that was the whole point. He could have come down, but he chose not to. He was the sacrifice, once and for all, for the sin of man. No longer would people have to sacrifice animals and shed their blood to be forgiven. Jesus shed his blood as our forever connection to the forgiveness of God. All we have to do is believe the story and accept Jesus as our savior.

If the story is true, Jesus went through too much for us to dismiss his sacrifice and ignore his gift. If you don't think it can be true, then I suggest you try to disprove it. But it is far too important to ignore.

Should the President of the USA be a Christian?

Vote in this pole with a yes or no answer

George Bush was a devoted Christian who counted on the prayers of his countrymen, and his belief in God, to help him through the struggles of his presidential term in office.
Now we have a new President who also claims to be a Christian and has spent many years associated with a church.
What do you think? Does it matter what our leaders believe?

All Good People Go To Heaven

The Narrow and Wide Gates

It is faulty and wishful thinking when people believe that they will be welcomed into heaven at the end of their lives because they were good people.

How good is good enough to get into Heaven? Won't most people think that they are good enough?

The bible says that the broad road carrying many people will lead to destruction, not heaven. Perhaps if you are thinking that just because you believe like the majority of people around you that you will be fine, you should think again.

"Enter through the narrow gate.
For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destrucion, and many enter through it.
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
Matthew 7:13 & 14

I'm sure you must be basically a good person, but are you on the Narrow Road?

Be Honest, What Do You Think of Christians?

Whether you are one or not, please share your honest opinion

Christain Psalm 139 The days ordained for me

I am a Christian which means I believe in Christ. I believe that Jesus came to earth and died on the cross to save me and all of mankind.
I am offended by people who write me off just because of that. These are the same people who would get all nasty if I wrote off gay people just because they are gay. (Which I don't, by the way) But it is perfectly fine for them to be prejudiced against Christians - lumping us all into a big group of undesirables.

We, as Christians, are all individuals and even within the Christian community there are many ways of thinking. So please don't dismiss me as if you already know what I think and believe.

Dare to Be Different At Christmas

Express your faith, or find it...

Christmas is a celebration of Jesus coming to our earth and saving us. He is the only real reason to celebrate.

All good things come from him and we can celebrate those as well, such as our families, friends and the time we have to spend with them.

At Thanksgiving we are reminded to be thankful, but that feeling of gratefulness should be with us every day no matter what.

In fact Jesus told us we would have troubles...

"In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world."
John 16:33

Different Bible versions also use this wording in place of the word "trouble";
tribulation; will have to suffer; disease; experience difficulties; and the Amplified Bible says all this: "tribulation and trials and distress and frustration."

None of us are spared from troubles!!! and if you think that life has been very unfair to you and wonder why a loving God wouldn't just make your life great...look at the life of Jesus.

God's own son had a very tough time while in this world, but he carried out his mission to save his people.

And that means you! It's why we celebrate.

Not sure what to believe? It's a great time of year to find out!

Drinking And The Bible

Is it okay to drink if you are a Christian?

I enjoy a few beers on a hot day - or a cold day. And I drink wine occasionally too. I am a Christian and I say it's okay to drink. I have looked through the Bible and come to this conclusion. Jesus's first miracle was to turn water into wine at a wedding where the host had run out of wine (John 2). Many believers do not drink. The body is a temple, is their usual reason. There are also other passages that speak negatively on the subject, mostly warning about the effects of too much drinking. So I am wondering where you stand on this issue and why. This module will let you voice your opinion on both sides, but I will have to approve them before publishing, so say it nicely please.

Is is okay for Christians to drink alcohol?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, Christians will not be condemned for drinking.

david says:

It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but that which proceeds out of the mouth that defiles the man.
....Jesus

says:

Although the Bible does not specifically say DO NOT DRINK, I believe there are Scriptures that say one should avoid drinking. I believe it can ruin their witness. I don't think they'll be condemned, but I think it would be better if they didn't.

yourgoldenfuture says:

The bible does not prohibit that...but for many its not good to do so...

glockr says:

Yes. The Bible doesn't say we shouldn't drink, it says we're not to get drunk. Jesus himself turned water into wine at a wedding.

No way, it should never happen.

clifRad says:

Yes....but watch out.

The Real Treasure

How do we store up treasures in Heaven? Isn't that impossible since we can't get there yet?

I think the answer is simple, but not easy to do in this money and "having things" oriented world where we presently live.

Most people believe that what they have is secure and safe. After all, they have worked hard for what they have. They have been smart and thrifty, choosing to save up for retirement and buy that brand new Porsche. They deserve it for all the planning and saving they've done.

So they make their lives nice and believe all is well.

I wonder how many give thanks to God for the fact that they can walk and see each day? And what if they couldn't? The job would vanish along with the income and savings account.

I've known such a drastic change. One day I was a housewife and home owner, and the next I was struggling just to survive and find a place to live. I believed that I was secure in my life and then all I had worked for my entire adult life -for 25 years- was gone.

I am a changed person and it is amazing how little "things" mean to me now. I will never again be fooled into believing that all I have is secure here on earth. We live in uncertain times where God is the only constant. I've learned so much by falling into a pit of darkness where the Lord held onto me and is still pulling me out.

Doing as the Lord calls us to do, is how we store up treasures in Heaven. Be less selfish and more self-less. If you've been blessed with a wonderful family, donate time or skills to help elderly who sit all alone in a nursing home. Have you ever missed a meal? Give to the local food pantry or help in a soup kitchen. Volunteer at church to help with the youth group, or in the nursery.

All work that helps the needy and lonely, and doing anything that shows compassion for our fellow human beings, is one way to store up treasures in heaven. The kind of treasure that can never be taken away.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also".

Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees, but...

the advice is for all mankind.

From 1973, the songs from the hit movie Jesus Christ Superstar tell the story of Jesus in a 70's kind of way. The actor, Ted Neely, is good looking as most portrayals of Jesus are.

What You Might Not Know About Jesus

Was he really handsome?

From artists renderings of Jesus the man, I always think of Jesus as very handsome. He is shown with a kind and thoughtful face and long wavy hair. He's always tall and thin and most often portrayed as good looking.

I also just assumed that since his father is God, then of course God would hand out all the best physical attributes possible to his one and only son.

From my standpoint, it's the good-looking people who have the much easier time in life. Don't we all want to look the best we can?

It was not until recently that I came across this revealing bit of scripture in Isaiah 53:2.

"He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him."

Not beautiful by our standards, but the "light of the world". How about that?

Add Inspiration to Your Home...Each Day!

A fun idea that kids can get involved with too.

Using dry erase markers, write your favorite inspirational verse on the top of your bathroom mirror.

Are you feeling down? Find a verse on being thankful.
Are you in the best mood ever? Look in Psalms for scripture on praising.
Need some help? Psalm 121 is one of my favorites.

Choose whatever you need the most to remember for that day or week and change it whenever you want. Every time you, or a family member, or guest visit the bathroom, he or she will see the message!

Get the kids involved in picking out the messages too and if they are old enough, let them write their own. (Be sure they use only dry erase markers! oops..)

Here are some to get you started.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. (Psalm 118:29)

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:16)

We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)

Love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22: 39)

Words of Hope From God

Jeremiah 29:11

This scripture is from the book of Jeremiah. He was a prophet called by God to announce the destruction of Judah and judgment on his (God's chosen) people. God's message of wrath and restoration came through this man who was called by God.

In Jeremiah 1:5, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

The verse below is from a letter sent to the exiles, who now live in Babylon, from Jeremiah. But the words are God's words telling these people what they should do and what is to come.

In the letter he tells them to marry and have children and increase in number and to pray for the city in which they live, because as it prospers they will also prosper. Also he warns them not to listen to false prophets.

After 70 years he (God) says that the promise of restoration will be fulfilled for his people and the verse below is part of his message of encouragement to them.

Hope and a Future postcard

Christians take this verse to heart as a message of trust in the Lord for wanting good for his children. God reprimands and teaches, like a loving father, but he does it because he wants good things for us.

Kids and Youth

I've seen, and been a part of, some great youth group meetings led by awesome people.

My own kids have been touched in good ways by the guidance of youth leaders.

So I am wondering if you- as parents or kids- also have been a part of such an experience?

Perseverance

The Bible is full of inspiration.

We were born for "such a time as this" and whatever your lot in life, make the best of it and continue to persevere.

Jesus told his followers that "in this world you will have trouble". He never said things would be easy and most of us know that they seldom are. But with God on our side we can persevere through the toughest of times and run the race; because we are already winners.

Journaling Is Very Important To Many People

You are free to write whatever you want

I keep a journal for many reasons, but I find that writing releases pent up feelings that otherwise would never be "said". I write because I am angry or worried. I write about miracles that I've seen take place in my life - yes, miracles! I write my prayers and requests and occasionally I write something about what my hopes for the future might be.
I pretty much write about whatever comes into my mind. Journaling can be whatever you want it to be. That is the great thing about it. No one sees it (at least in my case) and it's freedom to express anything and everything.

I read my mother's many journals after she had gone into a nursing home with Alzheimers, and in her later entries, it was obvious that she was having trouble thinking clearly and it became impossible for her to write sentences that made sense. But what was even more disturbing than that was the fact that her journals were boring! Her entries had hardly any personal information. A page would read something like this: "Raining today. Pam's 8th birthday. Susan and Bill and Larry came to the party. We had a nice time." That's it? As "Pam" I want to know more! I wanted to read something like this, "Pam looked so cute and she loved that pink bicycle. I can't believe my little girl is so grown up already." But of course the journal wasn't written for me. It was my mother's book of life stories and she wrote them the way she wanted to. In life, and in journals, she never gave a hint of motherly love. Just the facts. That was my mother.

I want my journals to be full of life...words that have feeling and give insight into what I struggle with, and what I hope for and how I believe. I want my future readers (who will most likely be my children) to gain insight into my life. They already know that it rains, and we have parties and good days. And I want my children to know without a doubt how much they have meant to me. For myself, I want to be able to go back and see how many prayers have been answered. Many have already. I learned from reading my mother's journals that although my life may seem very boring, my writing will not be!

So, what's your journaling story?
