Why Does Poop Smell?

Before we can figure out why poop smells and why different poops smell differently, we need to figure out just what exactly poop is.

We all know that poop is what comes out the other end after we munch and eat. But what part of what we eat actually turns into poo?

To answer that question, we'll need to take a trip inside our digestive system. So, picture yourself traveling down your throat, into your stomach. After your stomach is done digesting, you travel into the small intestines, which then proceeds to take up as much nutrients from the food as possible. At this stage, the digested food is all sludge. When it reaches the large intestines, whatever nutritional liquid that can be sucked up, is sucked up. After the large intestines have sucked up all they can for maximum nutrition, this is the point where the digested food becomes poop and it comes out.

Now that we know what poop consists of, we can now figure out why poop smells and why poop smells bad.

If we eat junk food, then junk is what will come out the other end and our poop will be stinky! It takes about 15 hours for food to completely pass through system. So, if you think about that and the temperature at which our internal organs are kept (a nice 98.7 degrees Fahrenheit for most people), then some foods will definitely start to stink after so long. If we eat foods that start to stink in a short time, then what comes out will surely stink as well!

We really are what we eat!

There's this show on BBC America called You Are What You Eat, and the nutritionist that's on the show talks a lot about poop. Very straightforwardly, I might add!

She will ask her client how their poop is. Is it smelly? Are they regular? Etc, etc.

She states very bluntly that when you change your diet to fresh foods, then your poop can very well start to smell aromatic! You will no longer be ashamed of bombing the potty!

So, it's all a matter of what you eat and when you eat it.

There's this program that I came across that helps you plan out a healthy meal program and it even comes with a meal generator to help you plan out your meals. Even though the program is for losing weight, it gives a lot of useful information on eating healthy. If you eat healthy, then your poop will smell healthy!

If you have cats, then you have probably battled with the smell of the litter box.

Did you know that if you feed your cats a good food, then their poop will start to smell better too? And that makes for a nicer smelling litter box. It'll reek less! Wouldn't that be nice?

I've experimented with different brands of cat food for my cats and have noticed a definite difference in the smell emanating from their box after they've done their business depending on the food I give them. Below are the foods that I am currently feeding my cats and their poops don't reek!

The same goes for dogs too. And if you feed them on a good diet, they will poop less which means less poop for you to pick up.
