Yes lets build a computer that can run less then half the software of a pc, costs almost twice as much as a pc, costs more to repair then a pc, costs more to upgrade then a pc, comes in less shapes and colors then a pc, less expandable then a pc. That can emulate a PC in a slower way (then why not buy a pc anyway?) Sure it has less viruses but it's not cause it's more secure, it's because not alot of people use it.

Wow I sure hope such a computer will be made that is worse then a pc and costs more. That way the standard of paying 2500, vs 599 for a computer can be accepted and that way most people won't be able to afford them.

I hate to even enter this arena, but I fix corporate pc's for a living and I generally use a mac to do it (I find that I can recover a lot of pc hard drives using the mac operating system without resorting to any specialized software). I have owned both macs and pcs since the 80's. I still either have or know where most of these computers are. 100% of the macs still fire up (including the old '86 mac in my basement) and I have never replaced a part in them or reinstalled the operating system. Only 50% of the pcs do and I have had to replace something in all of them. The most reliable pc I have had was a cheapo emachine from 1986 that also will fire up windows 98 any time you want and was used every day until 2 years ago (I did have to replace a power supply in it). I really do not count a PC as still firing up if I have had to replace a MB.

I don't really care what you run. In fact, I hope you run a pc because that is how I make my money, but that is my personal experience.

macs are truly overrated pieces of ****. i as a multimedia artist: graphics, film, music composition, feel that mac is sub par in almost every aspect to the pc.

everyone who bashes windows os usually get an off-the-shelf pc and start cursing windows and their moms...

i for one have an audio-optimized pc with cubase and sound forge, adobe suite of graphics, and not to mention a 64 bit vista running on intel i7 processor...vista with sp 3 runs like a freaking charm...

now i bought into the hype once and got me a macbook pro 17" with leopard, with its sexy, girly looks (windows look rugged like what men should have), and i was frustrated beyond belief. only after i bought the g-ddamn thing i realized there is NO option to swap battery...which means you have to take it to apple center after cycles. Core 2 duo (you can get quad core audio laptop or i7 audio pc for that money), apple 'logic' is so illogical compared to cubase, and cubase is way more future rich...contd...

And the window manager fucks itself too often...but all of this is not to say linux or windows sucks...but neither is supreme.

Firstly, the writer of this article kinda forgot how the Windows world has been raped countless times by viruses, how Windows Server plain sucks and is getting its ass kicked by Linux, and how Windows Vista (and Windows 7 to a lesser degree) are bloated pieces of software. Yep, I've tested the Win7 RC. Yep, it flew the first few days, but like any Windows thing, it slows down. Never deny that.
Now, I'm not a fan of Macs: I consider the Macintosh hardware very slim and nicely looking, but, however, I am not exactly a "fan" of it. It does nothing extraordinary. Mac OS X, on the other hand, is something I wish I could run on my PC. Being UNIX is good, plus Grand Central, openCL, and none of the Windows bloatware makes Mac OS X a beauty to be with. Yep, Mac OS X would be my OS of choice, save for the fact it only runs on Macs. Which brings us to the last point: Linux. I have nothing against the PC. But the Windows based PC's suck. So install Linux, or get a Mac. The hardware is irrelevant

Again, proving the windows user stereotype of missing half of not knowing what they are talking about. So you are saying that you bought a motherboard, hard drive, power supply, and case for $45? And no their is no mac with specs as shitty as that. A "pentium dual core"? Who are you kidding, that's as low end as it gets. Which brings up the next issue of that there is no such thing as a 3.04GHz Pentium Dual Core! And BTW I am also happy with windows 7 PRC except development on windows sucks no matter what windows OS you are developing for.

Well it';s true. You can easily do that. I just built a PC for $250 only, with Pentium Dual Core (3.04 GHz I think...), 4GB of RAM, an nVidia 8600 graphics card, a 52x CD/DVD-R/RW Dual Layer Burner and a 12-in-1 media card reader. For only $200. If macs had the same specs, I'm sure you'd have to pay at least $1000. Plus, nothing runs on a Mac. I'm happy with Windows 7 RC.

If you don't believe I did it, here's what I got:
    Pentium Dual-Core 3.04 GHz - $80
    4GB RAM (2x2GB) - $50
    nVidia 8600 - $30
    5-in-1 MCR - $15
    52x CD/DVD-R/RW DL Burner - $30

Plus a bunch of other stuff (like a motherboard), which adds up to about $250

I built my last computer using parts from newegg.com and I paid about $800 for the monitor and all the parts. To buy a comparable mac I would have to pay more than $2000. Before you say they handle media better just think the adobe media suite runs on PC too. It is not just on macs like everyone seems to think it is. My last comment is about security. If there were to ever be a virus for a mac it would destroy them. No viruses have been made for macs because there has been such a small market share. You may be safe now but if macs get more following you will have more problems than PCs have when the viruses come. With PCs you have more options and more options means better quality as long as you do your homework first.

Yes mac's are great for lazy people who have alot of money and don't want to take the time to learn how to use a computer properly. Sending alot of money helps them hide their ignorence and lazyness by buying a computer that really easy to use but that comes at a price, it limits what they can do and has many consequences. After spending the money and turning it on, they think, wow i'm so smart, I can use a computer and naturally because I spent alot of money it's the best ever.

    What they don't know...............
It runs alot less software compared to a pc, they are difficult and expensive to repair, difficult and expensive to upgrade, they take longer to repair and upgrade, they are much more expensive and have much less hardware stats compared to a pc. They only come in white.

Because hardly anyone uses a mac they hardly have any viruses, BUT you give up alot to have this. PC users who are educated have a more secure system.

    PC's dont have misleading commcerials

    Hmm...

I used to work at the Apple store. People came in there bashing macs. I told them that that is their opinion. People came in there bashing PC's. I told them the same thing.

Why can't we all just get along? There's so much freaking hate flying around here.

Macs have their benefits. PC's have their benefits. I choose to use a Mac just because that's what I like more. I like PC's too. They are really good for a lot of things and have lots of features that Macs don't. It's the same way Vice versa.

When it comes down to it, some like one, some like the other. it's comparing apples to oranges (pardon the pun). They are both good, and both useful. Just because they are different doesn't make one better than the other.

Anyways, I'll probably get called lots of names for this post by both sides because i see my computer as just a computer; not what defines me.

    Cheers.

So I'm going to go out and spend 1,500 on a Mac book and put xp on it.....spend that much for a 2.4 ghz processor and 1 gig of ram that doesn't even compare to a 699 hp that has a quad core processor with 4 gigs of ram.

I've used both a PC and a Mac for quite some time on each end. Firstly, mac mice have 3 buttons you god-damn idiot, it just looks like one large one. Secondly, the trackpads on Macs don't need two buttons unlike a PC, as they feature "Multi-touch" gestures, where you can use up to 4-fingers to access different features. I'm not a fanboy as I love PC just as well, especially for their gaming compatibility which mac sucks in. Which justifies why I run XP Pro x64 on my mac. Obviously the guy who had the Mac Pro with 10 gigs of ram that was constantly freezing either: A.) Didn't know what the fuck he was doing, and has more money than he needs by buying such a high end machine or B.) Leopard was fucked. I had a Dell XPS desktop that I loved, just got tired of crashes with vista, so I bought a mac.

I added 10gb of memory to it and it is still slower than my 3.0mhz duo-core windows machine running Vista Ultimate. Programs are always freezing up. I came back from lunch today and I had a warning on my screen that the operating system crashed and I had to hold down the power button to reboot. I never have problems with Vista. Don't switch. Mac brainwashes mac users. You're just the proof of this.It seems like every mac user feels the urge to say everything's mac is cool and neat and perfect even when it's utter shit. I don't want to go far talking about 1 button mice, I'll just say the most credible justification about them is "they look nice" - even though I think they look crappy. Because all the other reasons mac fanboys advocate are too stupid. "1 button mice are easier, users get confused by the right mouse button" - I read that *lots of times* - Wow, they really think something like that? It just proves how stupid mac users are, they get confused by a right mouse button @_@
And, I'm sorry, mac Shittops ARE sold with 1 button touchpads. And until the mighty mouse (that sucks too - who wants touch sensitive mice??) they sold 1 button mice.

Macs really cheat people with their lies. Don't take this lightly because marketing things that are not true is cheating. Did you know that Leopard can't even share files properly without a third party software? Did you know that many users who attempted to correct this improper file sharing of their entire computer by doing something simple and logical had their mac craptops and crapimacs "hosed." Including this user. Its so easy to lock yourself out your own mac without the mac warning you and with the mac being the reason of you choosing a setting that does that in the first place. And it just proves that mac is not worth the attention or the money it asks for. Just not worth it. It sucks.

A mac is way better than a PC, When I plugged my mouse in the right click worked right out of the box, no fucking around with settings. I'm getting sick of these PC users being shits about the 1 button mouse that apple once sold, they haven't sold a 1 button mouse in like 7 years so fuck off. The macs listed here are from a long time ago so don't talk shit about their specs. You people think that macs are only for people who don't know how to use a computer. I use a mac for all of my dev and it allows me to do a lot more than I ever could on a PC or linux. So if you don't know your way around a unix shell than go back to windows and your cmd.exe, 'command prompt'. Now that's a creation that is meant for people who don't know how to use a computer. Velvet_dust is another idiot who just said that mac hardware is 'outdated'. YOU ARE A DUMB ASS. All of the cheap ass PC laptops are still running on DDR2 and 1 graphics chip. The PC is only good for gaming and for cheap people.

How can they charge this much for garbage and get away with. Why do people wan't to spend that much to get so little in return. PC's will always beat macs in turms of value. My gaming computer only cost me £310 and it beats those macs by a lot.

Simply put a MAC insults your computer intelligence. To be so arrogant to think that we all want to do it the MAC Way. How long did it take them to allow you to right click your mouse.

No The Mac Itself is overpriced outdated technology in nice package. And it to will go the way of the Pet Rock.

Style over substance, The beauty of a MAC is it makes it users think they are computer geniuses. This is hard to beat. But It seems once the user realize how much they have been ripped off they usually come around.

    Good work

I'd have to disagree. I just bought the Macbook Pro after being a PC user my whole life. Never before have I felt so enlightened. Sure, there are cheaper windows PC's out there, but the new Macbook Pro aluminum is on a completely different level....

Who else makes their laptop out of one solid block of aluminum?

Who else spends hours trying to find just the right friction coefficient for their track pad?

Who else makes their key board feel like you're playing a Steinway?

Even holding it in your hands feels like you're holding something special.

Heck, the pre-installed isight camera senses light in the room and dims the screen accordingly. I have yet to see a Windows computer accomplish that.

Apple is so far ahead of the competition it isn't funny.

It's just that macs look beautiful (well, up until this year anyway. now they're all ugly again). That's all it is. Looks and case design.
People who don't care about "specs" and who aren't compu geeks love the look. But it's technologically overpriced and inferior to most pcs. They can charge high prices for crappier lower spec hardware because the cases are (or were) beautiful.
mac people and pc geeks/wizards should just stay apart and there would be no war.

I love my mac, and quite honestly I have found a happy balance between the two.
I have a Gaming PC running windows XP and a Macbook that I use for work.
In combination the two fit my lifestyle perfectly.
Yes I would probably agree that something like a Mac Pro or iMac might be over doing it, but when it comes to laptops, I haven't ever had a better machine.
The macbook switch to Intel is probably the best move that apple has ever made.
It completely removes all incompatibility issues with windows, linux etc...

You mention that Apple has had some problems and has made some poor choices in terms of design, ie Singular software configuration, Firestarting iPods etc...
    Heres my response:

    Windows ME.
    Enough Said.

BSOD's and freezing due to poorly written hardware drivers for thousands of different hardware configurations.

    Microsoft Zune Bug: http://gizmodo.com/5121822/official-fix-for-the-zune-30-fail
    (Fail)

At least Apple has a sense of focus.

If can't use windows products and get agressive every time someone talks dirty about apple cause it reminds you how bad you are with computers, get a girlfriend (or boyfriend).
I do use a mac, for many years, but not for working, only for websurfing. For real working, I have a dell workstation and it will kick any apple machine's ass. And I can upgrade it if I want to.

I would like to thank everyone for the fantastic discourse. I still think it's really funny we are locked in the grips of this passionate war of words over something as simple as two competing products. I have seen this same argument happen between digital and analog SLR users.
Let's set the record straight about a couple of things:
I have been using personal computers for close to 25 years, and I have had both Mac's and PC.'s I frankly don't see much difference between the two, other than some cosmetic design differences. It's the philisophical differences that make me hate Mac. People dont want a machine that will make them look interesting at the airport as they type out their next blog, They want something cheap that is going to make my life easier, and give them the skillset to generate decent revenue in a changing global economy. Become a global citizen and support programs like One Laptop Per Child, rather than a smug asshole who thinks his podcast has some real value.

I was a PC user for years. I worked in IT. I've built my own computers. I got fed up with it all, quit my job, became an electrical engineer, and switched to Mac. There is absolutely nothing reliable about Windows in any of its iterations. If you want your computer to just work, buy a Mac. If you want to constantly get "unknown errors" and reboot for no apparent reason, buy a Windows PC. When comparing prices, you may also want to consider the preloaded software. Macs come with quality software that you'll actually use. Windows PCs come loaded with a lot of crappy programs or trialware you need to uninstall. Of course, uninstalling it still leaves remnants in your registry, so from day one you're heading down a slippery slope of system issues.

This post is ridiculous, i've always been using windows and linux for years, up until this summer when I really go fed up with Microsoft and the shit they turn out. Vista took 5 years and 50 million lines of code and it is still horribly slow. It just doesn't make sense, a CPU can execute 60 Billion operations per second yet it still takes vista 5 minutes to start up. What features does Vista have over leopard anyway? most of them are stolen from mac and linux and Microsoft still can't get it right. For example the windows aero Filp 3D interface is bragged about by all the windows fanboys as something great. If you look at it it looks great, but when it comes down to it YOU CAN STILL ONLY SEE 1 FULL WINDOW AT A TIME! It isn't about apple, and I'm not a mac fanboy who will stick with mac forever. I just use the software that works best and in this case it is Mac OSX.

Besides, every day thousands of computer files are needlessly put at risk. Finding the right solution is so important. I know with a PC there are great backup solutions out there.

continuing my post (which is down) i f somebody would create an objective tread, not a subjective as all windows and mac and ubuntu users do, then you would see that on a hardware basis, macs and pc are internally the same.

Ohh and last, regarding the system, windows is just old shit technology, with nothing to provide on security, usability, or even looks, and linux, mac, bsd, solaris, etc, are just the right choices for you, as they, (even if they are based on the old unix technology), can provide you with great security and stability, OSX is as great as Linux is, is just a matter of tastes.

And please people understand, everything is like icecreams, just icecreams of different flavors, pc is vainilla, mac is chocolate, on systems linux is strawberry, osx is lemon, bsd is peach, etc, but windows, its like eating a poop icecream, its still icecream, but it will make you feel sick, and you will just want to throw it away.

Windows is just a system, a system which works bad
    IT'S FACT

why sadly? if you enjoy it then theres no problem! i for example, like macs, and i am not a system engenieer or something like that, but i have several similar computers, and my mac pro is better than them.
sure its pricey, but the design is far better than the one of any pc, and on the other side i actually have no monetary problems, i own 3 vertus, and are planning to buy a number 4, so money is like shit.
nowadays, macs and pcs are the same on hardware, but on the system, osx is far superior, no service packs needed and no stupid playschool graphis found on pcs.
i agree there are mac-level pc, even if you configure your mac pro to its maxium level, there will be a pc at the levelm but some people also like to pay for a superior design, and macs have much better designs, excuse me if i offend you, but pcs are merely horrible.
Its just a matter of taste, you people fight for the os and the hardware as if you had created it, when you are not even able to write a productive tread.

Macintosh's child-like interface is a little insulting, not at all intuitive, and worst of all... not consistent from program to program (unlike Windows and to a lesser extent Linux programs).

Just like XP its first year was pretty bad, but that's what service packs are for. All day long I have customers ask me if they van get Xp onststems my comply only offers with xp, and when I ask why, they say "bc of the bugs".... According to Apple and fanboys, macs are perfect machines which never give the user any problems. Think again. If you read Apple's own website, there are many many problems. Link below is to page one of 150 published issues with the Leopard O/S at Apple.com. There are also 150 for Macbook. Apparently, Apple limits the entries to only 150. That is a sad record. Add to that the fact that Mac's notebook batteries are soldered in, you pay for annual O/S updates and Macs are more expensive and slower than PCs. Cnet did a speed test of a Mac vs. Acer. The Acer won 80% of the tests. Get this: the Mac ran faster with XP than it did with Leopard even with "Mac friendly" apps like Photoshop. Let truth reign supreme.

PCs are perfect computers...if you want a headache! More affordable? Not if you want the same capabilities. I challenge anyone to go to your favorite PC website and build a laptop with the same capabilities as a Macbook. Your Macbook will run about $999. Your PC will run about $1499. You'll find most people that hate Mac have never even owned or used Mac. PC blows donkey dick. Next time I want a computer to use up all my resources before even starting a program, then freezing up to the point that the task manager won't display, I'll buy a PC. I think I'd rather stick with the OS that never has and never will give me any problems.

As a user throughout ALL the generations of MAC -- from 1987 when everything: OS and HD were on a floppy-- to my latest-- released last Fall. AND as a PC user for 23 years, I affirm that PCs NEVER compared.

Macs had "windows" long before "Windows." Macs don't crash, are easier to use, fix, faster and don't pick up diseases.

If Steve Jobs would not have been greedy back in the 80s, the OS would have been licensed to software manufacturers a ton of software written for Mac.

SOFTWARE WAS THE DEFINING DIFFERENCE... NEVER PERFORMANCE.

Speaking of Gates: If Mac was so bad, why was Microsoft so anxious to join forces with MAC in 1998, when Congress shot the plan down as creating a monopoly?

As far as price goes: I picked up my latest (7th) Mac for under $1500. A PC with the same capabilities would have run about the same or more.

As far as the PC Desktop for Mac: it may not be the best, but for about $70, I can run it without having to buy a PC. Can PC say the same?

I could go on forever but the bottom line is, PC's are better. There's more software available, they're more expandable, cheaper and there's a greater variety. I think the only thing MACs have going for them is they're cute and trendy. Some kind of status symbol that some people think they need to have to show that they're creative and like spending too much. Everyone knows it ;)

Honestly the entire debate is a result of a lot of people taking a side in comparing two separate entity's. Where PC excels very clearly at personal entertainment and common, everyday use for the average user the Macintosh can be pushed to the contrary. With a corporate spending account you can purchase an extremely stable workhorse for media processing. Neither is "better" because they aren't competing. If you're buying a Mac to game with because you think fat frumpy people are bad at your favorite video game (The commercial) I'd like to sell you a large Jet black with flame striped Humvee for your local work commute.

Macs have far worse hardware than PCs because they don't need it. Mac operating systems are efficient, unlike PCs.

I just want to clarify, I love PCs as well. I've been using them for 10 years and I'm taking an A level in them at the moment. All i'm saying, is that Macs (or rather mac users) get so much negative "criticism" by idiots who don't want to grow up, and spend there time using outdated insults :)

PC's are great for stuff like gaming and.... um.... well, thats all now really.
Oh, and i now run games on my mac :) COD4!

Quote from the vid below (by PC), "im into important stuff like spreadsheets, timesheets and piecharts". Well now Macs do this as well.

And "Lacey the crazylady", you can compare macs and PCs from 13 years ago. I dont know if you have noticed, but alot has changed since then.

Harry Nutz, you claim that mac users can't shut up, and yet you have taken the time to register that point; a little contradictory don't you think?
Also, your arguments make no sense. Your "insulting" mac users and not actually saying anything about the mac itself. Personally, I switched to mac recently and I think that it is great. I haven't had any problems with it and overall I prefer it to PC's. Yes, they are over priced but if you can afford them, why not splash out? But I suppose it's up to what you want to use it for. Personally, I use mine for everything and its fine, Word processing and gaming on bootcamp. But I think that its best for Multimedia and work; I'd rather have a Mac at work than windows.

Ever notice how most Mac users are skinny? It's because of all the calories they burn because they can't shut the fuck up about how great their Macs are. What is it about Apple that makes its users unable to shut their mouths? Everywhere I go, there's another asshole with a Mac preaching about how much better Macs are than PCs. They regurgitate lines directly from Apple's marketing campaign, like "it just works."
It's soo sad to these fucks throw their money away.

I have to say I disagree with you for the most part. I recently got a 24" Mac desktop with OSX leopard. It was a gift so I avoided the price tag but I do agree that they are far to expensive - but I'm still getting another one! 1) You can get the main office software for it (word excel etc) and they are all compatible. I have opened my school windows files no problem on my mac. As for gaming, I have bootcamp which I use for playing games that only run on a PC. I can run call of duty 4 (a very demanding game) on the highest graphics you can have extremely smoothly. The software is designed to run on less powerful computers so less hardware is needed. I suggest that you take a look in a Mac store (or any computer shop) to just try one out. I wasnt sure at first what with only ever havng used a pc before but I really love it.

i agree, we are forced to use them at school and it is like doing home work in hell. you cant do anything with them and they have a tendency of randomly turning off without you telling them to which causes problems when you are working on an essay. Unlike windows based computers, you cant go into dos and recover lost items, ounce gone on an apple your work can never return

I was a sucker and after listening to the silver-tongued praise of Mac from a close friend, I purchased a 15" MacBook Pro in 06 for way too much money. It has been a constant source of aggravation and disappointment ever since.Feel free to read my latest Mac Sucks story on the Jan. 28, 2008 entry on my blog at http://sprouseart.blogspot.com.

Macs are the worst, they are not business driven machines. They use low end processors and charge a hefty price on them claiming a dominate operating system. Yes they're good at photoshop... that's it. They used to be the dominate word processor also, but that's now gone since they use MSOffice.

Gaming and price has not been a friend of apple. less-proprietary up-gradabilty has finaly come into the fold but for what? a continued high price and less gaming than the pc of a system. i believe its the culture and design of there systems that draws people. you have to admit that there atleast consistant with all of that.

I bought into the Mac hype myself. I bought a iMac G5 with the IBM chip and Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. I would be using it then it would shut itself off in the middle of an app. I also got a few error messages at times, and the machine would have to be rebooted. And Safari, Apples own web browser, what a fucking joke!

I can't tell you how disappointed I am with my Mac. I feel like such an idiot buying into the hype about Macs and their ability to run Adobe apps ("you're a graphic designer and you use Window?"-YES!). I'm going back to my 4 year old Dell, with a Pentium II, that runs them smoother. I feel robbed!

Lets face it? Mac's are not the greatest computers to work with. However, they make a great home furnishings. As an example, my girlfriend's Mac computer looks great in her home office. The room's colors match the computer very well.

Just a thought? Apple should consider a partnership with IKEA.

Face it , all personal computers suck. There is no magical OS that makes our life bliss. Using a computer is like walking down the street and having bricks thrown at our feet every few steps. Only those that revel in playing dodgeball with these bricks enjoys using a computer.

Vista is a much better operating system than the Mac OS will ever be. Those Mac commercials that flame vista are ridiculous and wrong. Once SP2 comes out for Vista people will see that a software based OS can destroy OSX anyday of the week.

There was a time when the hype was true relative to desktop publishing on a Mac. I began in the PC world in the '80's. By the Mid '90's I was on top of the world. In my opinion, he decline of the Mac as a computer began when they decided to turn the Mac into an online jukebox.

The one thing I hate most about the mac is that whenever I see one of their commercials or ads, they ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL, flame windows. Look on the back of some receits, it says "there are many wonders, blah, blah, and why you're not using a mac", and some other crap. They should lay off.

I am Mac user and like the style and functionality of the Mac, but I use PC's at work. I think the Mac vs PC ads are ridiculous and offensive. Mac has cornered the niche personal computing market, but the flexibility and affordability of the PC make it an equally powerful tool.

Most people capable of Unix shell scripting wouldn't be doing it on an expensive machine like the Mac Pro. They would be working on a piece of crap x86 box that cost them $5 at a garage sale. I don't see these folks making a movie about their camping trip, any time soon.

Tiger adds the korn shell so you can run scripts written for other operating systems more easily. And of course you can use scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, tcl, Ruby and Python, with native support for the popular Tcl/TK, TKInter and WxWidgets toolkits.
