Pay for satellite radio? NEVER!

If you're still on the fence about getting in on the satellite radio revolution, please allow me this question. Do you remember a time when you could turn on the radio and actually ENJOY what you hear? I don't mean you found a station in town you could live with. I mean you LOVE it?

Every Sirius subscriber I know LOVES their Sirius Satellite radio. Yeah, LOVES it and has a good handful of favorite stations and programs.

Yeah, Howard Stern. So what?

I'm a Howard fan since he started broadcasting in Philly, around 1985 or so. I've been listening ever since and must admit - if it weren't for Howard I probably would not have subscribed. But there's a LOT more to listen to.

I like Little Steven's Underground Garage, Sirius Disorder, Left of Center and a few of the celebrity DJ's such as David Johansen's Mansion of Fun on Fridays from 3 til 7. They also carry NFL, NHL, NASCAR, left wingers, right wingers, 'alternative lifestylers'...the gamut.

I hear the reception from portable satellite radios can be unreliable. What's the story?

Yeah, this can be a pain. Thing is, whether you're using a car kit OR a home kit, the satellite receiver needs to see the sky. We vacationed in the Pocono's last year and had absolutely NO reception at our rental estate. The trees blocked us out.

If you live in or near a major metro area it's a lot easier to get reception. Did you know you may not even be getting a signal from the satellite, but from a local 'repeater'.

Sort of like cell phone service - in heavily populated areas it's easier to get a signal than when you're in the woods.

Is satellite radio hard to install?

It's VERY easy to install but it depends on your comfort level with this kind of thing. If you can hook up components to your home stereo you can get a satellite radio to work. Each radio operates a little bit differently but operates on the same base principles. My radio came with EZ to follow instructions and yours will too.

What about XM Satellite Radio?

Don't know, never heard it. Updated: now that the 2 satellite radio companies have merged I plan to listen to the Bob Dylan and Tom Petty shows. More soon......
