Two Rules for the Wicca Beginner
Although the Wiccan tradition is one that allows people to find their own path in many ways, there are two shared beliefs that any Wicca beginner should be aware of.
See below for more...
They are similar, but different from, the central rules of many major religions. These rules or guidelines place the utmost importance on taking responsibility for yourself and your own actions while being mindful of the effects your actions have on the world as a whole.
For a Wicca beginner the most important thing is the total embodiment and complete understanding of the Wiccan Rede. The Oxford English dictionary defines the word rede as "Counsel or advice given by one person to another".
The Wiccan Rede was created by Gerald Gardner, who is largely responsible for the resurgence in knowledge and understanding of ancient witchcraft traditions. The basic Wiccan Rede goes "an it harm none, do as thou will." The Rede means that you can do whatever you want as long as you aren't hurting anyone.
This rule is so simple that the amount of misinformation about Wicca concerning the casting of harmful and manipulative spells can seem quite ridiculous. A true follower of the Wiccan religion would never cast a curse or a hex; it is not a part of their practices.
The concept of hexes and curses exist in other forms of witchcraft, but not within the context of Wiccan witchcraft. For a Wicca beginner, the Rede lays out the principle belief that each individual is free to do whatever they want, but if whatever they want involves harming another it takes away that person's freedom.
The second widely accepted rule of the Wiccan faith is the law of return or the threefold law. This law is similar to the Dharmic understanding of karma. It means that any energy that you put out, any power or spell that you use, will come back to you multiplied.
Opinions vary on whether the energy comes back multiplied by three, or simply multiplied in some way.
This law provides benefits to those who hold to the Wiccan Rede and negative consequences to those who violate it. For those who follow the Rede and only work spells that do no harm, it means that the positive energy they put out will return to them in the form of good things in their life.
For those who violate the Rede, it means that the negative energy they put out returns to them in the form of negative and harmful energy in their life.
For the Wicca beginner, these rules form a solid foundation of how to be ethical and smart by encouraging positive energy and discouraging the negative.
