Witches Almanac:
Spring 2011-Spring 2012,
Vol. 30
If it's the world of witchcraft or the craft of witches that interests you or you have a hankering for some great folklore or mythology, find a dose a day in this popular and indispensible reference guide of notable celebrations, astrological forecasts, and other lesser known but interesting facts. For example, did you know:
* A single magpie is especially associated with bad luck. Only one bird croaking persistently around a house sounds the death knell of the occupant while two magpies foretell good fortune.
* All hail garlic! During WWII, British doctors used garlic as a remedy for gangrene and mixed the herb's juice with peat moss to bandage wounds. Funny that when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Rome a few years ago, the chefs were told to leave the menu garlic free!
* The black cat may be the best known Halloween feline, but orange-black-and-white calico cats have long enjoyed a connection with ill omens and the weird, too. That's because this cat's crazily mixed colors seem to mirror a chaotic inner personality.
* Dubbed by Eric Clapton "the most important blues musician that ever lived," bluesman Robert Johnson is said to have sold his soul to the devil. The story has it that at a crossroads outside Robinsonville, Mississippi, Johnson met a large black man who took Johnson's guitar and tuned it for him in exchange for his soul. Now there's a case of sold-soul music!
* The ash tree is well named, since it is one of the few trees that will burn easily and steadily when still green. Encased in winged pods that resemble the keys that were used in medieval locks, this tree's seeds are known as ash keys. In Northern Europe, the ash tree is thought to connect the underworld, earth, and heaven.

About wicca and paganism

I usually can't talk about this subject without putting my foot in my mouth.

Perhaps I should just leave it at the following:

Wiccans are NOT evil. They are NOT devil worshipers. Many call themselves witches - partly to stand up against ancient prejudices like the assumptions that witches were evil.

They are people like you and me whose spiritual path has taken them to look for the sacred in nature. Wiccans usually worship a God and a Goddess, though the stress is often on the female Goddess, more than the male God.

Paganism is a more general term which is used by people of all kinds of alternative spiritual traditions who use prechristian traditions (often shamanistic ones) as inspiration for their day to day lives. They too look for a large part of their spiritual inspiration to nature.

Paganism and Wicca both tend to look to the cycle of the moon (the lunar cycle) in their rituals, which is one of the reasons many of these calendars have information on the phase of the moon.

Wiccan holidays and sabbats

Witches calendars will have these listed.

Witches usually celebrate the following days. The dates are approximations, because they often depend on the cycle of the sun.

December 21: WINTER SOLSTICE - starts the Yule season. This date is the winter equinox, or the shortest day of the year.

February 2: IMBOLC, also called Imbolg, Otmelc, Candlemas, Earrach, and Groundhog's Day

March 21: SPRING EQUINOX, also called Ostara or Eostre. At this time night and day are of equal length (both 12 hours).

May 1: BELTANE, also called May Eve, Samradh, Cetsamain, and Walpurgis Night. Beltane is sacred to Maia, Greco-Roman goddess of spring. It is a fire and fertility festival which celebrates the transformation from maiden to mother.

June 21 or 22: LITHA, also called Summer Solstice, Midsummer, and St. John's Day. This is the longest day of the year.

August 1: LUGHNASADH, also called Lantmas, Lunasa, and Halfmass, the Festival of Loaves.

September 21: MABON, also called Autumn Equinox. Again night and day are of equal length.

October 31: SAMHAIN (pronounced sow-en), also called Halloween, Allantide, Shadowfest, and All Hallows Eve

What wiccans need to know about each year...

These calendars each come with information on the Spring and Fall equinox and the Summer and Winter solstice. Also included are the four main pagan holidays: Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane and Lammas.

Aside from that the phases of the moon will be included (as they are in many date books these days) for astrological reasons and because of the holidays celebrated at these times.

I was looking for something specific to men. There's a lot of women's stuff out there specifically, and while I have learned to appreciate these tools (especially We'Moon and Llewellyn's datebook), as a pagan man, I'd like to couple my We'Moon tool with something wrote from the perspective/for the perspective of a Wiccan/Pagan man. Until that presents itself, I will continue to enjoy the annual Llewellyn and We'Moon datebooks.

I'm afraid you're right: the niche is dominated by products for women. I'm sure there are just too few wiccan men who'd bring a pagan datebook to work.
