John Farmer Bell (born April 14, 1962) is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the southern rock band Widespread Panic. He is frequently called "JB" by fans.Bell attended the University of Georgia when he, Michael Houser, and Dave Schools met while Houser was playing at an open mic night. "Panic," as Houser was nicknamed, began playing with JB and Schools at local Athens, GA clubs, playing mostly covers.
JB is known for his raspy southern drawl that hits a variety of octaves.
John Bell is an active philanthropist, most notably as an advocate for SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). Bell has helped raise over $2 million for SMA reasearch, mostly through his involvement with "Hannah's Buddies," named for Bell's goddaughter, who lives with SMA. Bell is involved in an annual fundraiser featuring a golf tournament and evening concert by "JB and Friends," featuring John Bell solo, as well as performing with guests. Guest performers at the benefit have included Col. Bruce Hampton, Vic Chesnutt, Sam Holt, John Keane, and Bloodkin.

Schools has played bass with Gov't Mule in the past.He attended Collegiate High School in Richmond, and also sings vocals on various songs (Sleeping Man, Blight, Flat Foot Flewzy, All Along The Watchtower), and provides back up vocals for numerous songs. He plays Modulus Quantum 6 basses through Ampeg cabinets and a variety of Amp models such as Ampeg SVT and Demeter. One thing that sets him aprt from other bass players is his utilization of effects. Schools uses a boomerang phrase sampler, a moog moogerfooger low pass filter, Boss DM 3 analog delay, ElectroHarmonix micro Synth, Ernie Ball VP and other various effects. He recently mentioned that Jeff Lewis of Memphis 10 provides him with his baby supply and gave him pointers on all of his D&B sessions. Jimmy Herring
From Wikipedia
Jimmy Herring was born January 22nd, 1962, is a guitarist originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Herring has played with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Project Z, the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Jazz Is Dead, and was announced as the new lead guitarist for Widespread Panic in August 2006.Jimmy is the son of Betty, a high school English teacher, and D.B., a North Carolina Superior Court judge. He has two older brothers, Bobby and Joe. It was Joe who first introduced Jimmy to the guitar when he was 8 years old. Jimmy attended Terry Sanford Senior High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Although he played saxophone in the high school band, he quickly became known for his prodigious talent on guitar. Jimmy had a Telecaster guitar with a Stratocaster neck, in the same style as one of his biggest influences at the time, Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs. He also formed the band Paradox with drummer John Sutton and bassist Mike Logiovino, which played local bars including the Cellar and Baby Blues. Paradox was a cover band that played mostly jazz fusion instrumentals, including songs by the Dixie Dregs, Al Di Meola and Chuck Mangione, and included a 3-piece horn section for which Jimmy did the arrangements.
Jimmy Herring is a graduate of The Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood, California, as well as having prior attended one of the Berklee College of Music's Summer Sessions following his senior year of high school. He is well-known not only for his improvisational skills, but also for his combination of excellent speed playing and slower, more soulful leads. He has been a major influence to a myriad of guitarists on the American jamband scene, known for his fluent improvisational talent and ability to play complex and long solos without repeating phrases.
Michael "Panic" Houser (1962-2002)
From Wikipedia
Michael Houser (January 6, 1962 - August 10, 2002) was the lead guitarist of the band Widespread Panic.Born in Boone, North Carolina, Houser became a founding member of Widespread Panic in 1982 while attending the University of Georgia with John Bell. His distinctive playing style was featured on the band's first seven studio albums and is responsible for the band's moniker: "an honest tune with a lingering lead". Panic's large lineup released Houser from rhythm guitar duties, and allowed him to play lead melodies that lingered behind the dominant vocal melodies. Houser's nickname of "Panic" (earned due to his once-frequent panic attacks) became the basis for the band's name. After suffering from hip problems throughout the mid-90s, Mike began playing all shows seated in 1997 using two foot pedals, often simultaneously. Many consider him a master of the volume pedal for his skilled incorporation of its use in conjunction with the other members of Panic.
Houser was considered to be the "silent genius" of Widespread Panic and wrote many of the band's most well known songs, such as Porch Song, Airplane, Ain't Life Grand, and Vacation. Among those who he played with were Carlos Santana, Bob Weir, Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, and JJ Cale.
Houser played a discontinued guitar called a Fender Telecaster Plus Deluxe. He had two guitars he favored, a 1992 model, and a 1993 model, both with Firestorm Red Finish.
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2002, he died later that year at the age of 40. A solo album of his instrumentals entitled "Door Harp" was released after his death, and was followed by "Sandbox" in 2006. He is survived by his wife Barbette, two children (Waker and Eva), and many loving fans.
